Twenty-Seventh Sunday In
Ordinary Time
First Reading: Genesis 2:18-24
God created many different animals in an attempt to make a suitable partner for the first man. Then he took a rib from the man as he slept and built it up into a woman. At last God had created some-one who equaled the man, as she was “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” and they proved to be suitable partners for each other.
Second Reading: Hebrews 2:9-11
This passage describes how Jesus will become perfect through his suffering. It also reminds us that Jesus’ Father is our Father as well, making him unashamed to call us his brothers and sis-ters.
Gospel: Mark 10:2-16
The people began to ask Jesus if it was accepta-ble for a man to divorce his wife. Jesus tells them that two people who have been joined together by God should not be separated. People began bringing their children to Jesus, but the disciples tried to send them away. Jesus grew angry and told his disciples to allow the children to come to him.
Next week’s readings: Wisdom 7:7-11; He-
brews 4:12-13; Mark 10:17-30 or 10:17-27
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS
HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 4, 2015
“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two become one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no hu-man being must separate…people were bringing their children to him that he might touch them…he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on
them.”
Filled with the spirit of the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia, and the presence of Pope Francis, the scriptures are remind-ing us of all that has transpired. It is God who joins together, it is Christ who is wait-ing for us to bring our children to Him.
As we reflect on family and family life, we realize that we all belong to the family of God. We are blessed with others around us, to support, guide, teach and under-stand us. Our family might consist of wid-ows and widowers, single parents, newly married couples or blessed silver or golden anniversary couples. All lives created by God and enriched with His blessings.
As Jesus reached out to embrace, bless and touch the children, so He does with us. May we respond as we reach out to others, we bring Christ, His presence and peace to them. Pope Francis tells us ‘we are created in order to love, as a reflection of God and His love.’ Regardless of our current condi-tion, remember, we are all part of a family, a mirror of and reflection of God’s love.
For this we are grateful to God for His gift of love, His embrace, His countless bless-ings
“So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought
them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man
called every living creature, that was its name.” (Genesis 2:19)
The creation story reminds us of two im-portant points. First, since the start, God has
put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the begin-ning of mankind, it isn’t something recently
invented by the Church. Just as past genera-tions built our Church, it is now our responsi-
bility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations.

On behalf of the Parish Wellness Ministry and New Jer-sey Blood Services, many thanks to all who supported our autumn blood drive on September 27th! The drive was a wonderful success with a total of 54 blood prod-
ucts collected. In addition to those who signed up in per-son and on line, we had quite a few walk in donors as well. Many lives will be helped because you took the
time to give the gift of life! Our winter blood drive will be on Sunday, January 17th

NEEDED: Volunteers for the OLM Soup Kitchen team
(Family participation welcome too)
Over the past year OLM has staffed a Soup Kitchen effort to prepare and serve meals at St Mary’s Plainfield four times a year on the 3rd Sundays of the month (2:00 PM-4:30 PM). We’ve set up three separate sub-teams which revolve quarterly so that no team is over-burdened. We ask for a nom-inal one year commitment (again, one event each quarter).
The group being set up now will serve beginning this Decem-ber (12/20), then the 3rd Sundays in March, June, and Sep-tember 2016.
Members will be offered the opportunity to learn the ropes alongside a current OLM team. Each member/family will be assigned food to bring (pasta, salad, bread, or dessert prepara-tion).
St Mary’s is located at 516 6th St, Plainfield and is a short 15-minute drive from Warren. While families are also encour-aged to join, we prefer that children be 12 and over (everyone works).
For more information, call Roger Allen at (732) 369-3702.
Coat Drive The collection of winter coats has begun for St. Mary’s Winter
Coat Give Away that will take place on Sunday, Nov. 8th, in the basement of St. Mary’s School on West 6th Street in Plainfield
between the hours of 2:30 PM-4:30 PM. Please only donate clean coats, with no rips or tears, with
working zippers.. If you can volunteer or have any questions, please contact: Brenda Anderson ([email protected];
908-447-7131 anytime after Nov. 3rd).
All Souls’ Day All Souls’ Day is celebrated on November 2. Es-
pecially on this day, and throughout the month of
November, we pray for those who have gone be-
fore us into the next life. To recall more vividly
those friends and family members who have died,
we will be displaying their photographs in the
Church during the month of November, as we did
last year.
We will be adding to last year’s display, so if you
did not submit a photo last year, please place a copy
of photos of your loved ones in the box labeled “All
Souls’ Day” in the foyer of the Church no later than
October 18th. Photos should be no larger than 8”
X10”. The photos cannot be returned.
Consider using this opportunity to share stories
of the lives of your loved ones who have passed,
recall lessons they have taught you, and remember
how you loved them.
