Todays Readings First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 The Lord wants all people to love and honor his name. He says that those who honor him by obeying all of his laws will be “made joyful in my house of prayer.” Second Reading: Romans 11:13-15, 29-32 Paul describes his hopes that his fellow Jews will follow the example of the Gentiles he has been preaching to. He claims that just as God has mercy for their disobedience, he wishes to show mercy to the Jews as well. Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 A Canaanite woman begged Jesus to help her daughter, who was being plagued by a demon. Jesus at first refused her and said that “My mission is only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” The woman was so persistent that Jesus said she had great faith and then he healed her daughter.

Take a moment to learn some valuable information about our Knights, and what they do for US! We continue our series that will try to briefly highlight the 4 Principles of the Knights of Columbus. In prior weeks, we provided information on the 1st Degree of the Order, Charity and the 2nd Degree of the Order – Unity, and the 3rd Degree – Fraternity. This week we will explain a little about our 4th Degree – Patriotism. In Patriotism, we in the Knights are composed of many heritage backgrounds. We are Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Poles, etc. – all patriotic members of society. Our devotion for God and country allows us to profess the importance for religious freedoms for everyone. We serve our Veterans and seek to care for them when needed. Whatever sector we work in, public or private, as Catholic men, it is our duty to serve our countries and be counted among the best citizens possible. If you are a Catholic male over the age of 18 (or know of one) and not in the Knights of Columbus, we would highly encourage you to join and get involved with the Knights of Columbus. Catholic men need to stand up and join the fight for Catholic Values – the Knights of Columbus is a great way to engage in that struggle. Remember we are always seeking the fellowship of Catholic men and their families. Please see a Knight for more information on our social and charitable works or check the Bulletin for additional contact information. Please be on the lookout for information regarding our upcoming social events including a family game and pizza night, and other programs that will be held in conjunction with the Breaking Bread Committee. We will also be running a fundraiser at a local restaurant to raise money to support our charitable goals.

Volunteer with Convoy of Hope Convoy of Hope was founded in 1994 by the Donaldson family in gratitude for all the help

they received after their father was killed by a drunk driver in 1969. Through collaboration with churches, businesses, government agencies and other nonprofits, Convoy of Hope has served more than 80 million people throughout the world who are impoverished, hungry and hurting. Convoy of Hope is a nonprofit organization that serves guests of honor–in dozens of communities throughout the world–by providing them with free groceries, health and dental screenings, haircuts, family portraits, meals and much more at their signature, one day events. They were in Reading 10+ years ago, and now they’ll be coming to Norristown, PA. Volunteers are an important part of this community event and JAM members plan to participate to help bring guests of honor a poverty-free day.

The Healthy Family 2017 New for 2017 we began a series of articles, at least once monthly, to encourage healthy marriages and family life. Too often couples and/or families fall into a rut within daily living and aren’t sure where to turn for advice. The Catholic Church celebrates the sanctity of life, marriage and families and there is a plethora of knowledge to be had, right at our fingertips. We will feature different material from many sources; some weeks peaking your interest greatly and others you may not feel pertain to you now, but could in the future. The series will also be kept on our parish website (stjohnsfamilyoffaith.com), for reference, along with many more articles too long for the bulletin. We hope this series will find you rejuvenated in your personal life and struggles, with your faith right beside to assist. Happy 2017 to "The Healthy Family"!

SUNDAY CONNECTION God speaks to us in many ways, including through the Sunday Scripture readings. The Sunday Connection provides useful background and activities to better understand the upcoming Sunday's Scripture readings, helping you to connect the Scripture to daily life in a meaningful way. First Reading 1 Kings 3:5,7-12 Solomon pleases God when he asks for a wise and understanding heart to better govern the people. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 119:57,72,76-77,127-130 The law of the Lord is more precious than silver and gold. Second Reading Romans 8:28-30 God chose us to be conformed to the image of his Son. Gospel Reading Matthew 13:44-52 (shorter form: Matthew 13:44-46) Jesus teaches about the Kingdom of Heaven. Background on the Gospel Reading Today’s Gospel concludes three weeks of readings from the 13th Chapter of Matthew’s Gospel. Throughout these three weeks we have heard Jesus teaching crowds about the kingdom of heaven, and we have heard Jesus interpret some of his teachings for the disciples. In this week’s Gospel, Jesus offers three more short parables. The first two parables describe the great value of the kingdom of heaven. In the first parable, Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a buried treasure that is worth possessing even if it means giving up everything else. In the second parable, Jesus proposes that the kingdom of heaven is like a pearl of great worth for which one will sell everything else to possess. These parables teach us that we are to place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. The third parable that Jesus proposes in today’s Gospel is different from the first two, but it is reminiscent of the parable of the sower heard in last week’s Gospel. The kingdom of heaven is compared to fishing with a wide net. After the fish have been collected, the good fish are kept and the bad fish are thrown away; so too, in the final judgment, will the wicked and the righteous be separated. Today’s Gospel concludes with a curious statement about the scribe who understands the kingdom of heaven. Here a metaphor is offered: this scribe is like the head of a household who “brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” The scribes referred to here are experts of Mosaic law. It is possible that Jesus is here instructing the early Christian community on how to proceed in the interpretation of Jewish law with respect to Jesus’ “new” teaching. Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of heaven does not replace the Jewish tradition; it interprets it in a different light.

Prayers for Your Children As They Begin A New School Year By Whitney Hetzel The end of August ushers in the beginning of the school year for many, and we are reminded to pray for our children and for their studies throughout the upcoming year. We have much to pray for, including ourselves and all of the teachers. The following are prayers to begin a school year.

PRAYER FOR A NEW SCHOOL YEAR “God of wisdom and might, we praise you for the wonder of our being, for mind, body, and spirit. Be with our children as they begin a new school year. Bless them and their teachers and staff. Give them the strength and grace as their bodies grow; wisdom and knowledge to their minds as they search for understanding; and peace and zeal to their hearts. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” PRAYER FOR STUDENTS It is a beautiful and charitable thing to pray for all students. Pray for your children, and for other people’s children. Here is a wonderful prayer for students. “Lord, Our God, in your wisdom and love you surround us with the mysteries of the universe. Send your spirit upon these students and fill them with your wisdom and blessings. Grant that they may devote themselves to their studies and draw ever closer to You, the source of all knowledge. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.” A PRAYER FOR TEACHERS Teachers have a great responsibility, and they need our prayers, too. Remember to pray for those who instruct your children! If you are a homeschooling mom, you can pray this prayer for yourself and for the other homeschooling moms that you know. “Lord God, your spirit of wisdom fills the earth and teaches us in your ways. Look upon these teachers. Let them strive to share their knowledge with gentle patience and endeavor always to bring the truth to eager minds. Grant that we may follow Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, forever and ever.” WE PRAY FOR A HAPPY, SAFE AND FAITH FILLED SCHOOL YEAR FOR ALL OF OUR PARISHIONERS RETURNING TO SCHOOL AND OUR TEACHERS!
