Today's Readings First Reading: Isaiah 53:10-11 Isaiah speaks of how the Servant of God will have to give his life up for the sins of other people. Because of this suffering the Servant will receive eternal life for himself and all the people whose sins are forgiven because of him. Second Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16 Jesus is considered to be the new high priest and mediator between God and his people. Fortunately, Jesus has experienced the same temptations as other people, and so he has more tolerance of our weaknesses. Gospel: Mark 10:35-45 Two of the disciples ask Jesus that they be allowed to sit at his right and left side when he comes into his glory. Jesus explains that they should not be concerned with their position. Instead they should concern themselves with serving others just as Jesus was planning to serve many in giving his own life for their sins.

The Seven Principles of Catholic Social Teaching Justice in Action Ministry (JAM) will publish each of the principles of CST for your education and reflection. JAM suggests that you read the teaching for the week and sit with the questions for reflection. Be open to the Spirit of Love moving in your heart and your head. The fourth installment is printed below.

Week Four: Care for God’s Creation The commitment to care for creation is more than a social movement; it is a

requirement of our faith. In Genesis, God gave a command to Adam and Eve to care for the diverse and beautiful creation in which they lived. Humans possess this responsibility not because we are more important than other creatures, rather it is because we have the unique capacity to reason and choose to safeguard the harmony naturally occurring in creation. Because our choices impact generations coming after us, our decisions must be made not only for the sake of convenience and comfort, but for the future we hold in our hands. Such moral and ethical dimensions call for a consciousness of the whole that underlies Catholic Social Teaching. • How can I become more aware of the impact of my decisions regarding the food I eat, the clothes I buy, the energy I use? • What can I do to nurture my appreciation of the beauty around me and deepen a commitment to protect and preserve it for my children and grandchildren? • What is one practice I can adopt that will nurture my sense of wonder?

One step beyond: Suggested readings: Genesis 1: 1-31; Leviticus 25: 1-7; Daniel 3: 56-82; Matthew 6: 25-34 The countercultural choice to care for an unseen future – and unknown peoples elsewhere on the planet – is not easy. • How can we bring real faces and needs into our decision-making about the use of resources? • What is one step I can take to learn more about the impact of first world life-styles on the sustainability of Earth’s resources? (Excerpted from Catholic Social Teaching, Part II, from the Spring/Summer, 2018, issue of imagineONE, the publication of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Study Guide by Sister Pat Kozak, CSJ. Used with permission.)

Faithful Citizenship

Catholics Care. Catholics Vote. Catholics participate in political life. In their statement on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. Catholic bishops remind

Catholics about the call to participate in political life. "In the Catholic tradition," they write, "responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation ...The obligation to participate in political life is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do." (no. 13).

Catholic social teaching strongly promotes active citizenship. Through our opportunities as citizens, we can help shape a world more committed to protecting human life and dignity and promoting justice and peace.

In their statement the U.S. Catholic bishops lift up various issues of different moral weight and urgency. Some issues they mention include: addressing abortion, euthanasia, the use of the death penalty and

imprudent resort to war; protecting the fundamental understanding of marriage as the life-long and faithful union of one man and one woman; achieving comprehensive immigration reform; caring for our common home;

helping families and children overcome poverty; providing healthcare while respecting human life, human dignity and religious freedom; and establishing and complying with moral limits on the use of military force. You can love

your neighbors by advocating as a faithful citizen on behalf of those who are poor and vulnerable.

Remember to Vote… Be a Faithful Citizen. As you prepare to vote on Tuesday, November 6, visit www.faithfulc itizenship.org and read the U.S.

bishops' statement on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, watch videos and access other great resources. We urge all parishioners to exercise their right and responsibility to vote on November 6.
