NOTES FROM FATHER BOB…

TRINITY SUNDAY 2014

This feast of the Trinity is a celebration of God’s love for each person. The first reading tells of the steadfast love and tenderness God has for the people of Israel. In the Gospel, God as Father extends this covenant to all people who believe. The image which shows this love in its fullness is Jesus washing his disciples’ feet at the Last Supper. Flesh touches flesh, a gesture which prefigures the emptying of Jesus in love for others, as he accepts death on the cross. Faith overcomes doubt and is the gift which enables us to persevere, even in times of difficulty. The Trinity reveals a God who exists in relationships of love. God the Spirit helps us to love others more deeply. When the faces of others call out, whether at home or from the television, each one asks, “Where are you?” Our connection with other people calls for a deepening of solidarity, an increase in support, care and love. Love of neighbor and love of God are united in all our daily ordinary acts of love. Each person has a favorite image of God. In the past, it was often the statue of the Sacred Heart, which consoled people and reminded them of God’s love and compassion. Often at a funeral, the image is that of Christ the Good Shepherd. Different images help people to understand God at different times. Christian faith is a journey on which we are often called to let go of inadequate images of God and discover new ones. Which images of God are my favorites and why? Maybe there are some that I do not like. Again, why is that? Clement of Alexandria, who lived in the third century AD, spoke of God as Father and Mother – Father as Creator and Mother as Compassion. Do feminine images of God help me understand the depth of God’s love for me? The mystery of God and the mystery of the human person are bound together, since each woman and man is created in the “image and likeness of God.” If it is difficult to understand God, it is equally difficult to understand another person. If a human being is such a mystery, then to grow in accepting others is a great task. Do I cling to stereotyped images of others, which block me from seeing their goodness? Does my self -image prevent God deepening my faith? How might the face of another person be calling me to love?

FATHER’S DAY

Today we celebrate the reality of God as Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and we also celebrate the reality of our biological fathers as (Teachers, Protectors, and Models of Faith). It is a day set aside to recognize the important role of Fathers in our families and society. We look to these men for guidance, leadership, and love. We recognize today the powerful influence of these men on our Christian development as a family of faith. May God bless and keep these men in His loving care both in this life and for all eternity in the Heavenly Kingdom. We thank God this day for each of them and pray for them always. Dads, have a Blessed Father’s Day with your loving sons and daughters. Blessings in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Father Bob Pastor

REGISTRATION REMINDER

It is time to register your child/ren for Religious Education Classes for 2014-15. Make sure that your child is part of an exciting faith adventure. Growing closer to Jesus and our parish family is always exciting and never ending. Please note: Students anticipating celebrating their First Communion (second grade) or Confirmation (8th grade) need to be in the program for 2 years prior to the reception of the sacrament. (1st & 2nd grades and 7th & 8th grades). Remember that we need a copy of your child’s Baptismal Certificate if you are new to our program. I look forward to hearing from you. Please think about offering your gifts and talents by teaching the children of St. Cletus Parish. Please consider the call to share your faith as a catechist. Perhaps you could work with a partner. ST. CLETUS CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY

All parishioners are invited to join us as St. Cletus celebrates Independence Day. On Thursday, July 3 we will welcome back the City Lights Orchestra for a free concert on the parish lawn. All are invited to join in a Ravinia-style evening which will include music that will be fun for the whole family. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and will conclude about 8:30 p.m. (at dusk.) Then on Friday, July 4, we will again honor military personnel - active and retired - at our 8:00 a.m. Mass. This powerful liturgy has been a St. Cletus tradition for over 30 years; many members of our surrounding community come to our parish just for this event. Our music will be enhanced by the 40-piece Independence Day Band, and all military personnel will be recognized for their service. Plan to start this holiday giving thanks to God and saying thanks to all who live among us that have served our country faithfully. Justin Sisul Fine Arts Director

FOOD PANTRY UPDATE…

• We were able to meet the need for our June 12 monthly food distribution because of the generosity of our supporters both in the parish and throughout our community. Thank you for your food, gift cards and monetary donations…and for remembering that the need for food donations does not take the summer off! • According to statistics generated by the Greater Chicago Food Depository, 47% of households they serve in Cook County say they have to choose between paying for food and utilities. 44% report choosing between paying for food and rent or mortgage. Some of those people reside right here in our area. • As we replenish our pantry shelves, most needed items this week include cereal, macaroni & cheese, canned fruit, canned vegetables, spaghetti noodles, pasta sauce, meals in a can, and boxed sides. All in date non-perishables are greatly appreciated.

HUNGER WALK REMINDER Saturday, June 21, is the 29th Annual Hunger Walk: Registration 7:00 a.m., Step-Off 8:30 a.m., Soldier Field. Thousands of men, women, and children will gather on Chicago’s lakefront to raise funds and awareness for the fight to end hunger in Cook County. The 5K, 3.1 mile Hunger Walk benefits pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in Cook County that are members of the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s network. Our Food Pantry will receive $12 in our Greater Chicago Food Depository account for each walker we bring. Can’t take part in the actual Walk? You can also participate by making a donation. 100% of all proceeds go directly to help our pantry. To join the St. Cletus team (A01336 - St Cletus) visit www.chicagosfoodbank.org/hungerwalk. This website also provides all details of the walk, along with registration forms and opportunities to make donations to our team. Important: All participants and donors must designate the team number and name as seen above, for our pantry to receive credit. (FYI, our team captain is Dan Alpe.) Thank you! SOCIAL CONCERNS SVDP CLOTHING DROP BOX

Recently we received a letter from the Director of the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift stores, which I would like to share with you. Thank you for reading it and spreading the word to anyone you know who might use our drop boxes. Mary Beth Ford, Director of Social Concerns We would like to thank St. Cletus Parish for allowing our drop boxes to be on church property. During the last few years the donations have picked up. So have the items that we do not take. The drop boxes are meant to hold clothing, linens, and shoes only. We need your assistance in helping us stop items such as furniture, baby items (car seats, strollers, etc.) from being left at the boxes. We know the parishioners are not the only ones that use the drop boxes, but by word of mouth the message will get out. Thank you for your help in this matter, and again thanks for helping us help others.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: The Most Holy Trinity; Father’s Day Monday: Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time Thursday: St. Romuald Saturday: St. Aloysius Gonzaga; Summer begins

WORD OF LIFE Every individual, precisely by reason of the mystery of the Word of God who was made flesh (cf.Jn 1:14), is entrusted to the maternal care of the Church. Therefore every threat to human dignity and life must necessarily be felt in the Church’s very heart; it cannot but affect her at the core of her faith in the Redemptive Incarnation of the Son of God and engage her in her mission of proclaiming the Gospel of life in all the world and to every creature (cf. Mk 16:15). -St. John Paul, II, the Gospel of Life, 3 LIFE IN THE TRINITY

The name of the Trinity is, without a doubt, the most familiar sacred name to us. We speak it every time we make the sign of the cross, and it forms the heart of our Creed. Trinity Sunday is a good day, however, to stop and reflect on the unique role of each of the three persons we name so often in the Trinity and in our own lives. When we celebrate the Eucharist on Sunday, we come together as the Body of Christ through our baptism, and through the power of the Holy Spirit we offer the whole prayer of the Mass to God the Father. This presence of the Trinity does not stop when we leave church on Sunday. We are—always and everywhere—members of the Body, and every thing we do as members of that Body is empowered by the Holy Spirit, all of it offered to the glory of our loving Father. Take a moment each day this week to reflect on how the persons of the Trinity were present to you during the day, and how other people came to see the presence of the Trinity in your witness to the Good News. THE MOST HOLY TRINITY JUNE 15, 2014

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.
