Lamb, Goat & Heifer Validation Validation for Major Stock Shows has been set for Monday, October 27th

at the Posse Grounds.

We will begin tagging-in from 4:00pm-6:00pm. 4-H members and parent signatures are

both required.

Please note that validation is required for the major shows, but you will still have to do

a show entry through the office.

Tags are $30.00 and must be ordered by October 17th.

HEIFERS : You need to bring the heifer’s registration papers into the

office before registration.

Entries are due

November 6, 2014 Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston & Austin

Please note that entry deadlines in the premium list are for the office ONLY.

4-H’er deadlines are determined by the office and will be strictly enforced. In

order to ensure your entry is submitted on time, you MUST have your entries in by

the above deadline.

* You need to have your social security numbers at your disposal when entering

these events.

* You need to have completed quality counts prior to entry. You do not need to

re-do quality counts again if you have already went through the test. Tiffany &

Kayla will have the numbers available to you.

Raising and exhibiting livestock has a long standing tradition in the 4-H program and is one of the

reasons many of our young people have joined the program. Some 4-H families have raised and shown

market and breeding animals for generations, where others may not have any experience. What’s

great is our program welcomes the legacy livestock exhibitor and the first timers all the same.

If you are new to the livestock project there are some important things you need to be aware of.

Do not purchase an animal until you have spoken to myself or a project leader in your club. Each show has their own requirements/deadlines that must be met in order to show. If you are not in

accordance with requirements/deadlines, you will not be eligible to show. Some specifics include: Ownership deadlines

Validations

Entry Deadlines

Age of Animal

Breed of Animal

Though major livestock shows (Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, San Angelo, Austin, Dallas and

Waco) are exciting and Fort Worth and Dallas are in our backyard, they are not the place to start if

you’ve never raised or exhibited livestock. Our recommendation is to compete at the county livestock

show in June for 2 years before venturing into the major stock show waters. You might even consider

taking a trip over to Fort Worth or Dallas and watch so you at least have an idea of what to expect.

You need to make sure you have the appropriate facilities.

Take the time to go and watch shows and attend educational clinics, and don’t just stop at

one. You are not going to learn everything you need to know in 1, 2, 3….years. Our most

experienced feeders will tell you that they are still learning with every animal they raise.

Make sure you buy from a reputable breeder. Find someone willing to answer questions

throughout the feeding program.

Be prepared for stock show costs. There are validation fees and entry fees that you must pay

as well to enter the show.

Please understand that this is your project. We will provide you with support but it is your responsibility to continue to do the work at home.

You will get out of your project work what you put into it.

Last year Parker County youths, Andria Latham and Caroline Ramsey, were two of the three recipients of the Youth Scholarships from Metro Beekeepers Association. It is time to offer those scholarships again. If you are interested in this go to www.metrobeekeepers.net and click on Youth Scholarship to the left, but hurry the deadline is Nov. 22, 2014. If you have questions feel free to contact us.

Youth Scholarship - Metro Beekeepers Assoc.

Program Overview:

The art of beekeeping is being encouraged through this youth scholarship program. The Metro Beekeepers Association is willing to work with young people to not only teach the hobby, but to educate them as well on the industry as a whole.

The scholarship is for youth between the ages of 10 and 18 who are residents of Tarrant, Johnson, Parker and Ellis counties and enrolled in public, private or home school. The program provides all the equipment necessary for the recipient(s) to become a hobbyist beekeeper.

Recipient(s) will receive an orientation and/or a book on beginning beekeeping, have a mentor, and get to have their own hive to learn from and take care of during the process. The direct mentor-ship and close supervision lasts one year, which is long enough to ensure the student(s) has had enough time to be on their own in the hobby. Upon successful completion of the scholarship requirements, the recipient(s) will receive a recognition certificate and full ownership of the hive.
