Wednesday Whole School Assembly Due to the swimming carnival tomorrow, the first whole school assembly will be held in week 3 on Wednesday 12 February. The assemblies are held in the school hall at 2.10pm each Wednesday afternoon. Parents, carers, grandparents and friends are always welcome to attend.

2020 Swimming Carnival Our swimming carnival will be held this Wednesday 5 February and is for all Year 3-6 students. The swimming carnival is a school day and it is expected that all students will attend and participate where possible.

Canteen News Welcome back to school and hello to all the new families.

The canteen is now open five days a week on the Infants and Primary side for recess and lunch. Recess orders are encouraged. You can order through the lunch bins on a brown paper bag or preferably, on Flexischools. For a copy of ordering information and the canteen menu, please go online to the school website www.parkes-p.schools.nsw.edu.au or call in to the front office or canteen for a copy.

Volunteers are required in order to run the canteen. If you have any spare time to help once a week, fortnight, month or even a term, please see the canteen supervisor, Tracey, or phone the school to speak with her.

Uniform Shop The uniform shop is open on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30-3.30pm and Friday mornings from 8.30-9.30am.

Breakfast Club Volunteers Needed Breakfast Club has started this year and runs each morning from 8.35am until 8.50am.

If you are able to help pour cereal, make toast and wash dishes for the breakfast club, please contact Andrew Taggart on 0409 606 719 or leave your name and phone number at the front office.

The Breakfast Club program is particularly beneficial to those children who leave home very early in the morning or who have an early breakfast and are quite hungry by the time they get to school. Teachers notice that children learn more easily if their tummies are full.

The children love the special care they receive from the Breakfast Club volunteers and the volunteers voice how much they enjoy helping the children. It really is a win-win situation!

Medication If your child is on regular prescribed medication that needs to be administered at school, you need to have filled in the appropriate paper work which can be collected from the office. This needs to be completed each year. We can only accept medication that is in the original box showing the dosage of medication to be given. When a new script is supplied, we also need to have the new box so as we have the current prescription.

Parents in the School Grounds Please be aware that, whilst we are more than happy for parents to be on the school premises before and after school at drop off and pick up times, it is important to move in and out of the school as soon as you can so that children can get their routines under way.

School Banking: Commences tomorrow Wednesday 5 February.

Back to School Community BBQ on Thursday 20 February at 5.30pm.

School Photo Day: Tuesday 10 March

Welcome back to a new year of school for all of our families. Welcome to our new Kindergarten children, who started ‘big school’ yesterday.

Many of you will be aware that our phones were out yesterday. Unfortunately, the storm caused some damage to our phone system, the server and other computers across the school. The phones and server may take at least a week to fix (fingers crossed). In the meantime, we have organised a way for the main phone number to be available again so that the school can receive and make phone calls. We do apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused families yesterday and appreciate your understanding and patience with this matter.

During our Staff Development Day last week, the staff were involved in a session on using and evaluating quality evidence articles. The session was led by a Principal, School Leadership. Following this, we completed mandatory training which included Anaphylaxis and CPR training.

The P&C held their AGM last night. Thank you very much to all of the parents/carers who attended. Congratulations to the returning office bearers and to our new P&C Secretary, Sarah Todd. On behalf of Parkes Public School, I would like to thank Sarah Wilkinson for all of her hard work as the P&C Secretary.

The P&C discussed the organisation for our Easter Fete, which will be held on Saturday 4th April. They have a lot of amazing activities, raffles and auctions planned. If you would like to offer assistance in any way to help with the Fete, please contact the school or the P&C directly via their Facebook page.

On Thursday 20 February, the P&C and the school will be holding a community BBQ at 5:30pm in the Infants playground. The BBQ was a lovely success last year and provided an opportunity for our Parkes Public School families to meet staff and other families within our school community. Further information will be available about the BBQ closer to the date.

We held our Leadership Induction this morning. It was wonderful to see all of the families in attendance. I am very proud of the students who have taken up the responsibility of leadership for the student body as Prefects, Sports Houses Captains or Vice Captains or Junior AECG members.

Our swimming carnival will be held tomorrow. Thankfully, the weather is not as hot as last week’s temperatures. Please make sure that your children bring their broad brimmed hats, plenty of water, sunscreen and appropriate clothing to protect them from the sun.

Our first Whole School Assembly will be held next Wednesday 12 February. We look forward to seeing you there.

Have a wonderful week,

Mrs O’Neill

Scholastic Book Club Eight times a year (twice a term) Book Club pamphlets from Scholastic Book Club will be given out to students. Issue 1 order forms will be sent home this week and orders will close on Friday 14 February. To purchase books or software, complete the form on the back of the sheet and return with the correct money in a well-sealed envelope. If paying by cheque, please make payable to ‘Parkes Public School’. Students place their envelopes in the collection box that goes around in the morning to each class. The school has joined the ‘LOOP’ system for credit card payments. You can now order and pay online! No order form is needed to be filled out or returned to the school. Your order will be delivered to the school and we will forward on to you child. When Book Club forms are handed out the date for closing orders will be published in the following newsletter. It will take approximately two weeks for the orders to arrive after the closing date. If you do not wish your children to see the books ordered, please make a note on your order form along with a contact phone number. You will be contacted when the books arrive and they can be picked up from the school office. This is a service offered by the school to allow you to purchase books. There is no obligation to buy. Last year our library received many free resources as a result of the support from students and families. This was greatly appreciated!

Library Days Library borrowing days are as follows: Monday - 3-6T, 3L, 5S and 4K Tuesday - 4R,6C,2L and 5W Wednesday - 2C, 1H, and 3W Thursday - 6R and KE Friday - 1D, 1/2B and KM Children who would like to borrow will need to either have a library bag or pillow case to protect the books being transported from home to school. Unfortunately there are a few students who still have outstanding loans from 2019, and these books will need to be returned or paid for before these students can borrow in 2020.

Mrs Dolbel, Librarian

Congratulations to the Parkes Public Boys’ Hockey Team which was awarded the Parkes Sports Council Team of the Year 2019. The boys attended the Australia Day ceremony and proudly received their award.

Our school is very proud of this team and the way they have represented Parkes Public School. The team won the 2019 State Knockout.

The school would again like to thank Mr Glenn Johnstone and Mr David MacGregor for their expertise in coaching our team.
