BONE HEALTH – IMPROVE IT WITH CALCIUM, VITAMIN D & EXERCISE骨骼健康: 钙质、维生素D和运动有益

“WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN GOOD BONE HEALTH?”

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the bones, causing them to become weak and brittle. As Parkinson disease can affect one’s movement greatly, People with Parkinson may not engage in sufficient weight-bearing exercises such as walking, stair-climbing and dancing. This, as well as insufficient calcium and/or vitamin D intake, limited sunlight exposure due to reduced mobility, and the common characteristics of the average Parkinson population (older in age and of lower body weight), are factors that make People with Parkinson more susceptible to osteoporosis. As Parkinson disease advances, people are more likely to fall due to gait and balance impairment, which increases the risk of bone fractures. Therefore, prevention of osteoporosis is especially important for People with Parkinson.

Bone-strengthening nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, in addition to weight-bearing exercises and adequate sunlight exposure, will help to keep bones strong and reduce the risk of fractures. The best dietary sources of calcium include milk and other dairy products such as yoghurt and cheese. Small fish with edible bones (eg. ikan bilis/anchovies), soybean products, calcium-fortified soy beverages and certain dark green leafy vegetables (eg. spinach, broccoli, kai lan and bok choy) are also good sources of calcium. Food sources rich in vitamin D are limited. Good dietary sources of vitamin D include oily fish (eg. salmon, tuna and mackerel), milk, egg yolks and vitamin D-fortified foods (eg. cereals and bread). Do note that individuals can obtain sufficient vitamin D through adequate exposure to sunlight (eg. arms and legs exposed to sunlight any time between 10am and 3pm, 5 to 30 minutes each time, twice a week).

必须提醒大家,一个人可通过晒太阳吸收足够的维生素D(例如每周两次,在上午10时至下午3时之间的任何时间让手脚直接暴露于阳光下,每次5到30分钟)。

“I’m conscious of the importance of maintaining good bone health through my diet and lifestyle. I consume dairy products like milk and cheese frequently for calcium. I enjoy Kick-boxing and Yoga at PSS, and also take walks and swim in the mornings to expose myself to sunlight.”

– Mr Pang Boon Kow, PSS member who joins us for weekly Kick-boxing & Yoga classes

“I’m a firm believer of exercising to strengthen the muscles to support the bones.”

– Ms Eling Teow, PSS member who joins us for weekly Kick-boxing & Yoga classes

“For good bone health, I do weight bearing exercises averaging about 5 hours a week, such as weight training, piloxing, zumba and hip-hop dancing.”

– Ms Tan Bee Yian, PSS Volunteer who helps out at our weekly Physiotherapy classes

PSS @ CAREHAB 2019Our Principal Physiotherapist, Ms Sylvia Liew, was invited to help curate the programme for the participants of the CaREhab 2019 Pre-Congress Workshop held at Singapore EXPO on 21 February 2019. Entitled “Parkinson : Epidemiology to Progressive Rehabilitation”, the workshop was led by A/Prof Eric Shamus, Chair & Associate Professor, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Florida Gulf Coast University, USA, and drew a good mix of local and overseas physiotherapists and doctors.

Apart from learning more about Parkinson through Prof Shamus’ presentation, the participants were also treated to hands-on sessions on Kick-boxing, Tai Chi, Yoga and Tango, tailored for People with Parkinson by a team of experienced trainers. We are thankful for the support of

our dedicated partners who shared selflessly during the workshop – Ms Jennifer Chung, Tai Chi Master Trainer; Ms Angeline Goh, Yoga Teacher; Ms Julina Halim, Co-Founder of The Better Movement Studio, and our dear Sylvia who led in the Kick-boxing segment.

Please affix stamp here.
