As we approach another Spring and Summer in Northern Nevada, we look forward to the many outdoor activities that await us. I encourage you to look at the many services outlined in this brochure in a different way. I want to focus your attention on what the City of Reno is doing to help address the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. The Department’s Mission is to provide the community access to a wide variety of recreational pursuits. This may seem a superficial goal to some, however, we take it very seriously in our programming, food service offerings, park operations, and recreational options that are available to everyone. In our focus on youth and teens, we realize this is a critical time of their lives when they are forming their independent decision processes that will be the basis for life-long habits, behaviors, and thinking patterns. Our goal is to be a positive influence to help youth, teen and young adults understand the importance of fitness, overall well-being, including mental, emotional and physical health. Youth Obesity has received significant press coverage over the past five years. According to the National Center for Disease Control, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the U.S. in the past 30 years. In addition, the Obesity Action Coalition has identified obese children are 70 percent more likely to be obese as adults. This carries a greater risk for obesity-related health conditions such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep disorders and cancer. These are sobering facts that no parent, grandparent, guardian or foster parent wants to face, however, know there are local resources and personal help at your fingertips.Washoe County School District has completed their own studies and analysis compared to state and national averages. Although a 2010 report shows Washoe County’s rate for childhood overweight and obesity is higher at 34.3% than the U.S. average 31.9%; it is lower than the state average at 38% of school-aged children who are reported as overweight or obese. There are many immediate and long-term benefits to addressing your child’s overall fitness when they are younger:• Better concentration at school• Less likely to contract Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease• Better self-image which helps to promote self confidence and self esteem• More energy• Greater ability to handle stressSo, what can you do? Consulting your family physician is a great first step to assess the status of your child’s health and develop a plan of action. Generally, obesity is determined by measuring the BMI (Body Mass Index). This can be easily done by checking the following website, which calculates your BMI http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/. This is just one indicator and should not be assumed as the only assessment tool, which your physician will verify. Finally, there are many actions you can take to help your child be active:• Plan family activities that involve physical fitness (swimming, walking, biking, etc) and join in the activities – don’t just watch. • Limit time in front of the TV and computer and encourage outside physical play. • Support your child’s participation in sports and activities in school, classes and individual sports. • Help your child find an activity or group of activities they enjoy. • Develop a routine by having a regular schedule for physical activity. And remember, Parks, Recreation and Community Services are here to help you and your family have fun, stay active and stay fit!

Yours In Healthy Recreation!Julee Conway, Director

Reno’s two recreation centers are great facilities for fitness and exercise activity. At the Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center patrons have access to a weight room fully equipped with dumbbell and barbell weight equipment, cable resistance machines, a universal machine, floor mats and Swiss balls.

The cardio room is filled with treadmills, elliptical trainers, stair steppers, and upright & recumbent bicycles. EMNECC also has locker rooms, a full-sized gymnasium, a four-lane lap pool and paved pathways through the adjacent Dick Taylor Park that provide variety to any workout routine.

The Neil Road Recreation Center has a circuit training room that uses both hydraulic resistance equipment and calisthenics to provide a full-body workout. Patrons can also use the gymnasium for activities like volleyball, basketball and pickle ball. Miguel Ribera Park makes other activities possible including strolling, soccer, and more.

Fees to use the facility vary and are based on the amenities one plans to use. Stop by one of these facilities for a tour and to discuss with staff which fees apply to you.

Tiny TotsCertified American Red Cross instruction begins with basic physical and mental adjustment to the water. Participants are taught basic safety and swim readiness skills using play as the primary form of teaching. This class does not teach children to be accomplished swimmers, but helps to develop a comfort level in the water and establish the basic building blocks for the future instruction. Participants are 3 - 5 years old. Five students per instructor.

Our urban forest encompasses trees and vegetation on both public and private property within the city limits. A dedicated staff of Arborists and a professional Urban Forester maintain over 24,000 publicly owned trees in city parks and along public streets. Their work is vital to both public safety and tree preservation.

Reno’s Arborists are concerned about trees that appear to be dead, dying, or diseased, that have large broken limbs, low limbs, or limbs blocking traffic signs, signals or intersection sight lines. To report concerns about trees causing a public hazard call Reno Direct at 334-INFO. For Information about all programs Call the Park Office at 334-2270

Firewood SalesReno Urban Forestry sells firewood to the general public. The wood yard located at 190 Telegraph is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for wood cutting. The wood is in log form and requires people to saw their own rounds for splitting. The cost is $75 per cord. Customers must first sign a waiver of liability and pay in advance at the Park Maintenance Office, 2055 Idlewild Drive. Office hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday - Friday, excluding holidays. Payment by cash or check only.

The Whitewater Park has grown into a cultural icon, an essential ingredient of Downtown that is the envy of cities across the country. Opened in 2004, the half-mile Whitewater Park features five drop pools over 1400 feet in the north channel; six pools over 1200 feet in the south channel. The north and south channels are created by Wingfield Park, a grassy island park with an amphitheater and facilities for concerts, festivals, picnics, outdoor sports and recreation. Visitors to the park will commonly see people using kayaks, canoes, rafts, or inner tubes pass through the park any time of the year. Kayak, raft and tube rentals are available by local concessionaires. As with all river systems, safety precautions should be exercised (i.e. use of personal flotation devices). No lifeguard on duty. Call us at 334-2414 for more information.

Sensory Garden: The City of Reno Park Maintenance division is developing the area in Idlewild Park that is an abandoned amusement park into a Children’s Sensory Garden. Children’s sensory gardens generate pleasant experiences of smell, sight, touch, taste and sound for people and create welcoming spaces that stimulate imagination and learning. Many studies confirm that sensory gardens provide therapeutic benefits for those dealing with difficult situations such as personal loss, abuse, injury, illness and developmental issues.

The City of Reno’s Children’s Sensory Garden would not only include individual beds that focus on the senses, but would also include interactive features such as a trees with sensory value, a rock sculpture, and living willow tunnels and a living willow hut. Using willows to produce living structures is a fun way to involve children with the out of doors. Tunnels would direct children to garden areas while the igloo would allow an area for discussion, instruction or just play time.

Rain Garden: They collect rain water and snow-melt in the winter, infiltrating it back into our local supply, and thrive on drip irrigation in the summer. They also provide beautiful urban habitat for butterflies and foraging wild birds… AND provide protection for our Truckee River. Rain gardens help protect the river. Using drip irrigation instead of sprinklers, rain gardens reduce overspray and flooded gutters by allowing water to filter through the soil. Infiltrated water is cleansed before it reaches the river, much better than gutter flows carrying dissolved pollutants into our river from pet waste, pesticides, and other materials. By removing turf and replacing with a drip-watered garden, you could save a lot of money AND protect the Truckee River at the same time! TMWA has a helpful online landscape guide to help choose the right plants for your site, www.tmwalandscapeguide.com.
