ASSIGNMENT 2

Take a look at these passages that talk about the importance of finding and influencing disciples. Discipleship is a form of mentorship. What we are doing in these modules is also a form of discipleship/mentorship. It’s coming alongside someone and helping them grow spiritually as you walk alongside them. You do that each weekend with our Parkview Students and families. Jesus saw the value in having a small group to pour into, and to have them witness Jesus as He lived His daily walk with God. As you read these passages, look for ways and reasons why a discipleship/mentorship relationship is important, and what your role could play into being a leader/mentor to those around you.

Matthew 4:18-21, NIV As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon and Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them.

Matthew 28:18-20 NIV Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Philemon 1:4-7 NIV I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.

QUESTIONS

1. When Jesus called His first disciples (Matthew 4:18-21), what were they doing? What were you ‘doing’ when Jesus asked you to jump into student ministry? Didyou ‘leave your nets’ immediately or did it take some time? Have you recentlynoticed anyone you’d like to call away from their ‘nets’ to join you in studentministry at Parkview?

_________________________________________________________________________________

2. Matthew 28:18-20 lays out a set of ‘objectives’ in disciple-making? Name some.As you consider these, what does it look like to adjust focus from directly leadingstudents to leading adults as they take next steps in discipleship? Jesus leaves a finalchallenge in this passage, reminding us that we are not alone in accomplishing thiscommandment. How do you sense Jesus’ presence as you prepare to lead?

3. Ministry is all about partnership – partnership with the Holy Spirit as He does His work and partnership with one another as we join Him! There’s a deep sense of community and teamwork in Philemon 1:4-7 that finds its ‘footing’ in encouragement. What are some ways you like to encourage those around you?

• Which of the descriptions of a team player is most important to you? Why?

• What is your gut-level response to this personal question: “Do you think you’re a team player in your youth ministry?” What’s the evidence to support your yes/no response?

• Which of these five characteristics do you need to improve upon? What’s one tangible step toward growth you can make? What concerns do you have about making those changes?

• In 1 Corinthians 1:10 (NLT) Paul pleads with the church, “I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.” In what ways might this verse apply to your youth ministry team today?

• In light of this verse, what tough conversations might you need to have in order to seek unity with other leaders on your ministry team? Are you willing to have those difficult conversations?

• Take some time to pause and praying for the unity and harmony within your team.

• What might stand in the way of you having a Christlike attitude when serving your youth ministry team? How might you be more like Jesus in those situations?

PARKVIEW STUDENTS TEAM LEADER TRAINING MODULE #3 // LEADER GUIDE

CONNECT: Spend a couple minutes at the beginning of this session allowing yourself and your trainee(s) to connect with one another relationally.

CELEBRATE: Spend a couple minutes talking about how God has been working since you last met together.

COACH: Discuss this module with your trainee(s), answering any questions that come up.

MODULE #3 COMPETENCY: Develop community.

Welcome – smile, signage, readiness Wanted – appropriate touch, words of affirmation Known – know a name Noticed – remember a detail

MODULE #3 OBJECTIVE: Students and volunteers who are valued and recognized are more likely to return. When they are a part of community like this, they also feel more compelled to invest in their own faith journey. In this session, you will learn how to be present in the lives of the students and volunteers around you to help them feel welcome, wanted, known, and noticed.

ASSIGNMENT 1

Welcomed

It can be easy to overlook ‘radical hospitality’ at church. We know we shouldn’t, because after all, we love Jesus! But because we know each other and we feel like we’re an open, caring place, sometimes we think hospitality happens by ‘osmosis.’

Page 14: PARKVIEW STUDENTS TEAM LEADER TRAINING · 2020-04-06 · PARKVIEW STUDENTS TEAM LEADER TRAINING PARKVIEW CHRISTIAN CHURCH PAGE | 3 COMMUNICATE: Share important information with your

12 | PAGE PARKVIEW CHRISTIAN CHURCH PARKVIEW STUDENTS TEAM LEADER TRAINING

But there are some key components to helping leaders engage students in feeling welcomed, wanted, known, and noticed!!

Have you ever hosted a dinner party? Ever hosted one that went wrong? Sometimes having people over goes off without a hitch! The food is done on time, the table is set, and you’ve even gone the extra mile and have music playing as they walk up to the front door or a personalized sign greeting them to your home.

Sometimes – it’s not like that at all! The kids have their clothes everywhere. You were caught in traffic and so the entire meal is running late. You haven’t even had time to DO the dishes, much less get them to the table on time.

In both cases, guests are polite, happy to help, and ready to enjoy their time with you and your family. But as we assess our preparedness, we’re horrified. That was NOT the way we wanted to extend hospitality to our guests.

Likewise, when we’re still setting up check-in, or stations aren’t manned, or signage isn’t out, or maybe we’re short-handed and frustrated…students may forgive that and enjoy the evening anyway.

But it’s definitely not the foot we intended to place forward.

QUESTION

Describe a time when you had to overlook a lack of ‘radical’ hospitality or a sense of ‘welcome.’ How did it make you feel? Did it impact the way you prepare to help others feel welcomed?

CONNECT: Spend a couple minutes at the beginning of this session allowing yourself and your trainee(s) to connect with one another relationally.

CELEBRATE: Spend a couple minutes talking about how God has been working since you last met together.

COACH: Discuss this module with your trainee(s), answering any questions that come up.

MODULE #4 COMPETENCY:

Partner with parents.

MODULE #4 OBJECTIVE:

In the Bible, God says that the responsibility for helping raise children in the Lord belongs to both the parents AND the godly community around them. That’s us! In this module, we will talk about why partnering with parents is important, and what role you could play in being that additional godly voice in a child’s life.

ASSIGNMENT 1

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (NIV)

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (In reference to God’s commands and words.)

Psalm 71:18 (NLT) Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me.

QUESTIONS

1. Read Deuteronomy 6:4-9. What are the differences in heart, soul, and strength? Do any of those come more naturally to you than others? What are ways we can ‘continuously’ impress matters of faith on students? On parents?

2. Deuteronomy 11:19 and Psalm 71:18 talk about passing our faith stories on to the next generation. How can we get to know the faith stories of parents better? Students? How might we encourage one another to share these stories at church and beyond? Will you share some faith highlights of your own journey right now?

ASSIGNMENT 1

The last command that Jesus gave before ascending to Heaven was to go make disciples. He was telling the people He had personally invested in to turn around and invest in others, teaching them and showing them who Jesus is and what it means to follow Him.

Matthew 28:19-20a (ESV) “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

ASSIGNMENT 2

Read the following from “Leading Leaders” by Mac Lake and answer the questions. Recruiting and Keeping Leaders If we are honest, we have to admit that many recruiting efforts in churches are poorly executed because indiscriminate pleas are made out of a sense of desperation. Others can sense when we will settle for any warm bodies we can find. It’s as if we wave a white flag and ask people to please get on board a sinking ship. People are attracted to momentum, and they like to be part of winning teams. Below are seven key steps for successfully recruiting a committed leader and making it a positive experience for him or her: 1. Ensure the individual’s gifts and passions fit the position you’re offering.

Having the wrong person in a position is just as ineffective as having no one in the position. Be patient and let God lead you to the right person with the right gifts. When we recruit the wrong person to the wrong position, we not only do the overall goal a disservice, we also do that individual a disservice.

2. Tell the individual why you thought of him or her for this role.

Be very specific. The initial recruitment moment is your first chance to cast the vision to the potential candidate. Take the opportunity to develop a picture of how this person’s gifts, passion, and personality match up with God’s vision for that particular cause. Help the recruit see the potential for significant impact. Remember, your job is not just to fill a position but also to cast a vision.

3. Give the potential recruit time to pray.

Never ask someone to make a decision on the spot. When we do “on the spot” recruiting, the individual feels the pressure to say “yes” to you rather than truly having the opportunity to say “yes” to God. Once you make the proposal, tell the person you’d like him or her to take a few days to pray about the opportunity before giving you an answer.

4. Give the individual a written description of what you expect.

You know what you want from a volunteer position. However, we often recruit someone and wrongly assume that person knows what we want. It’s a recipe for disaster when we don’t put our basic expectations for the role in writing. Be as thorough as possible. People appreciate it when they commit to a position and there are no surprises.

5. Give the individual some time to observe and shadow a veteran volunteer.

This not only equips your new recruit, but it impresses on your existing volunteers the value of mentor-based training.

6. Provide adequate training.

We all know this is important, but very few people do it. Some make the excuse that they don’t have time to do the training, but when the new recruit starts making mistakes, you will have to invest more time on the back end to correct what’s wrong. Be wise and make the training investment on the front end.

7. Follow up within thirty days to see how the recruit is doing.

Within the first thirty to sixty days, your new recruit will surely begin to experience some disappointments, defeats, or disillusionment that could dampen his or her enthusiasm. Your recruit will also have things to celebrate. Following up at the end of thirty days to encourage and coach him or her will mean a happier, more productive team member.
