Everyone knows someone who has survived cancer. But no one knows anyone who’s survived Alzheimer’s – until now.
Cognitive decline is a serious concern as we age. A physician friend recommended a book titled The End of Alzheimer’s , “Dr.
Bredesen has provided enormous hope for the before now difficult clinical problem of Alzheimer’s. Bredesen’s early studies suggest
that this approach can halt and in many cases reverse early Alzheimer’s” Leroy Hood, MD, PhD.
I’m so impressed with the book and the hope Dr. Bredesen offers that we purchased several copies. They will be placed in the
library for your reading.

WINTER IS ON ITS WAY Don't be caught unprepared!
TIPS ON PREPARING FOR WINTER IN YOUR MANUFACTURED HOME
All these things are important reminders for you to immediately check on, since the
cold weather is on its way. To call a service man after you have frozen pipes is
ridiculously expensive and completely unnecessary if you do the following;
I . Water lines should be protected by wrapping them first with an approved heat cable. Install the
heat cable per the manufacturer's instructions. At the beginning of cold weather, check to be sure
heat tapes are electrified and in good working condition. lf you are going away for an extended
period of time, it is wise to shut off the home's water supply and electricity to the hot water tank.
2. Skirting should be installed per the manufacturer's instructions, keeping in mind to provide
for adequate ventilation so that odor or condensation problems do not occur. Make sure all drain
lines from air conditioner, heat pump. etc. drain to the outside of skirting.
3. Close all access points to skirting to keep mice from living under your home. Adjust storm
door closures for proper closing action and latch function to allow for a minimum of air
infiltration. Install weather stripping on doors if gaps occur between doors and framing.
4. Vent the clothes dryer directly outside your home. Improper venting will contribute to
major condensation problems in the house.
5. Do not leave a stream of water running from your faucet as this will contribute to our septic
system failure and is a waste of water. Avoid pouring small amounts of liquid in sinks and toilets
as a small amount of liquid by itself may freeze in your drain in the severe cold.
6. Furnace filters should be cleaned regularly since air can't pass freely through a dirty filter
thereby increasing your heating costs. An efficient furnace = lower heating bills!!!
7. During periods of severe cold, leave cupboard and closet doors open at night or when you
are away, so that heat may passively circulate in these otherwise cold areas.
Updated resident phone list and park maps are available in the Parkwood
Office. Stop by Monday—Friday to grab one!
PERT is hosting a free Lunch for all residents following the regular PERT meeting in October. The menu, prepared by Sandi McGriff, will be sandwiches and salads followed by a tasty variety of freeze dried
emergency rations. Our experience with the disaster food at a similar luncheon last Spring showed us we have nothing to fear about these types of food. Come an see for yourself. You will be
pleasantly surprised.

Eleven Parkwood residents set aside three Saturdays in September to attend the basic 24 hour academy
for CERT training. The academy is designed to turn ordinary citizens into certified CERT team members
assigned to Clallam County Fire District 3. These eleven team members are headed by Commander Mike
Hansen who organized the original CERT program in Parkwood fifteen years ago. With this new updated
training the Parkwood team will be better prepared to help their Parkwood neighbors in the event of a
major disaster affecting the Olympic Peninsula. Classes on the first two Saturdays included sessions on
Risk and Preparation, Terrorism, Radio Communications, Disaster Psychology, Light Search and Rescue
and Triage. The third Saturday was a Field Day held at the Fire Department’s Maintenance, Operations
and Training Facility on Carlsborg Road. During that day the team members spent eight hours
participating in exercises designed to teach such techniques as Cribbing, Rescue, Carry, Forced Entry,
Treatment and Assessment and Fire Suppression.
The Parkwood team members each received a certificate of completion, their personal protective
equipment. and an assignment to be an official Tier 2 CERT team working under the authority and
supervision of the command of Clallam County Fire District 3. Each member is registered as an
Emergency Service Worker with Washington State. In addition each team member must commit to
participate in at least one or two-hours a
month of on going training.

If you see any of these folks, thank them for their service to Parkwood.

Dogs in Parkwood
Please remember when walking your dog in Parkwood to keep them on
leash at all times and that it is your responsibility to pick up after your
pet and dispose of the waste. Last month it was brought to my attention
several times that some residents are not picking up after their pets and
letting them run off leash. This creates a big issue for all pet owners and
non pet owners in the park. So please be a courteous neighbor and take
care of your pet. -Thanks, PW Management
