Playground Reminder Children will be outside on the playground weather permitting. We use the “real-feel” on weather.com to determine if the students should go outside. They will be outside if the real feel temperature is 20° or above. Please dress your children appropriately as the cold weather approaches! Hats and gloves are necessary winter apparel.

A Finnish colleague once shared a saying they have in her country, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing."

If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress, please start by contacting your child’s teacher(s). If you need additional support or have further questions, feel free to contact me at any time. -Mr. Cohen

Notes From the Nurse Important Information for Parents in Kindergarten, Grade 2 and Grade 4

This is a reminder to all parents who have not yet sent in physical exams for their children, or who have not made arrangements to see the school doctor.

Physical examinations are required for all students entering Kindergarten and Grades 2, 4, 7 and 10. Physicals need to include your child’s BMI (Body Mass Index). The examination may be completed up to a year before the school year for which it is required .

Please check the date of your child’s last physical examination to see when it was performed. If it was before September 2, 2014, you will need to schedule another exam for your child. The documentation (health certificate) must be submitted to school if it has not yet been done. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Cody at 914-257-5490 or [email protected].

Notes from the Classrooms Music News

Alyssa A. asked, “Did everyone hear how 4th and 5th grade rocked it? All the parents began to sing Jingle Bells!” Congratulations to all of our fourth and fifth grade students for an excellent job at our Winter Concert.

Happy Holidays

We are again collecting for Toys for Tots. There are boxes set up in the lobby to collect new, unwrapped toys. If you would like to contribute, please do so by December 18th! Each year we collect these toys for the Marines to distribute locally in Westchester. Please consider helping out this great cause. If you would like to make a financial donation, you can do that on-line at http://www.toysfortots.org/donate/

Measuring Up in Kindergarten We have been experimenting with measurement over the past two weeks. We are using

non-standard units such as linking cubes, blocks, pattern blocks, and even our bodies to measure things in our classrooms! Last week, we tackled a very large item, the Rockefeller Christmas Tree! Mr. Hochreiter, our Superintendent of Schools even stopped by to help us warm up to such a tall object!

Using our bodies, we found out that 22 B-V Kindergarteners are the

same size as the 78 ft. Spruce! We even tried using our large building blocks and determined that the tree was as tall as stacking 76 blocks together. In addition to measuring

length, we are also trying out balance scales and learning about the weight of objects. We compare items by saying one is heavier or lighter. For example, a feather is lighter than an apple. A book is heavier than a crayon. Practice measuring things at home and talk about the ways we use measurement in our lives. We also discussed how it’s always wise to “measure twice and cut once”!

Second Grade Here’s a riddle to ask your child: “What is the busiest letter of the alphabet?” If your child responds, “The letter e,” s/he understands the vowel – consonant – silent e pattern, which we have been learning about. The addition of a silent e to the end of the word hop obviously changes the word to hope, but it also changes the short vowel sound to a long vowel sound. As you can see, the “e” helps out, but keeps it’s mouth shut when it does it’s job. The children have also continued to identify suffixes, syllables, and vowel sounds.

In Math, the students have been learning how to add numbers. Students have been using a place value chart and place value disks to model adding two numbers. The use of the place value chart and place value disks helps students understand how to regroup 10 ones as 1 ten when adding. This was/is the foundation for adding numbers vertically.

The children are tremendously excited about our current Listening and Learning Domain, Cycles in Nature. We have been learning about cycles that are part of our daily lives, including the seasons and day and night.

Fourth Grade Hello from fourth grade again! We continue to be so proud of our students who shine on a daily basis! They have been working hard and trying their best! In ELA our focus has been non-fiction and all about the Iroquois. We are reading a fantastic realistic fiction chapter book called Eagle Song. It’s a story about an Iroquois boy in fourth grade, who moved from his Mohawk reservation. We have been learning all about how they lived, their customs and their way of life. It is so interesting to learn about! We have also been reading some great articles in our “Story Works” magazine. We have completed some challenging tasks to go along with the articles.

In Math, we continue to work on multiplication and division. It is imperative that the students practice their multiplication facts every night. Most of the students do not have them memorized as of yet, memorization is key!! Remind your child when doing long division to use or write at the top of their paper D.M.S.B. This is a great help, the kids remember “Dad, Mom, Sister, Brother”… really stands for “Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down”!! We are also continuing to strengthen our problem-solving skills by working in cooperative groups and using different strategies to help us solve word problems.

As we approach the holiday season, we want to thank all of you parents for all you do and all your support!! Happy Holidays and all the best for 2016! ~The 4th Grade Teachers

Literacy Center Beginning Readers: Look! I Can Read This!

It can be so exciting when your child begins to read! Beginning readers are starting to put it all together, and are often eager to do it by themselves. As a parent, it's important to support their efforts in a positive way and help them along the reading path. Here's a little information about beginning readers, and a few pointers to keep in mind.

A beginning reader:

• can name the letters in the alphabet and can tell you many of the letter sounds

• understands the concept of a "word"

• is beginning to recognize a few words within text or from a list

• is beginning to represent the first and maybe last sound of a word when trying to spell

When reading with a beginning reader:

• Model finger-point reading. That means to follow the words with your finger from left to right as you read them. Your beginning reader will do the same thing for a while.

• Practice patience! Beginning readers may read slowly. Give your child time to decode the words, and avoid jumping in too quickly.

• Encourage attention to letters and sounds. If your child is stuck on a word, prompt them to look at the first letter of the word and make the letter's sound. Of course, only do this for words that can be sounded out! If the word can't be sounded out, just supply the word for them.

• Talk about the story. When your child is finished with a book, be sure to talk about what happened in the story, and maybe re-read favorite parts.

• Let them know how proud you are! By sharing a book with a child, you're sharing the joys and excitement of reading.
