Weekly Halachah Why do some people wear their tallit over their heads during davening? The Talmud describes wrapping one's self entirely (ituf) when davening as a means of displaying respect for G-d, and this practice is recorded positively in the Rambam and Shulchan Aruch. Our sages classically understood this form of "wrapping" to include covering one's head, beyond the standard kippah/yarmulka. Some communities limit this to married men, but others apply it to all men over the age of 13. Some apply it to shemoneh esreih, spe-cifically, while others expand it to other parts of davening.
Some contend that this practice applies only in places where covering one's head is a normal sign of respect for authority, and that modern Western communities do not see head-covering as a sign of respect. Others argue that the Western lack of head-covering is due to reduction of respect for human authority, but that head-coverings themselves remain a sign of respect.
On a separate note, some cover their heads when davening in an attempt to increase their humility and awareness of G-d.

#AFTERSCHOOLSPECIAL
HIGHLIGHTS
Last week, our #afterschoolspecial included the fol-
lowing: Divrei Torah, Scavenger hunt, Exercise and
last Tuesday's theme was juggling. We watched a
short video with a Comedic Juggler then all learned
the talent of juggling. We used plastic bags because
they are light and float in the air. Everyone enjoyed
this fun new hobby.
Congratulations to SHUA COLMAN and UZIEL
YUNGER, last week's raffle winners!

Parsha Emor
We learn in this week’s parsha, Emor, that G-d instructs the jews to leave a small corner in their field unharvested for the poor to
take when they need it. This teaches us a lesson in how we perform mitzvot and acts of charity. We learn that we have to take into
account not only how we perform the act of charity but how that act of charity is received.
For instance, I learned in the BAYT youth parent-child learning last week, that “Whoever embarrasses a person in public, has no
share in the World to come” (Avot 3:11). I learned from this that we should be sensitive in how we perform mitzvot, to ensure we do
not embarrass anybody even by accident. How does this relate to everyday life? Well we learn that there are different levels of
mitzvot. In this difficult time, we can help others by donating to food charities, food banks, or even help others by grocery shopping
for them.
Another way of giving charity is by supporting the recipient by buying their goods (even if you don’t need them) or by hiring them
to complete a job/task for you. This way they can feel valued by earning their wages. I strive to perform mitzvot in this way.
Thank you and shabbat shalom.

The Jewish Pyromania Question
People around the world ask a really interesting question, “So, what’s with Jews and fire?” They’re completely right, every Jewish
holiday seems to have something fire-related. Shabbat candles, Chanukah candles, burning of the chametz and, of course, bonfires
on Lag Ba’Omer. From a young age, everyone is told they have a special fire burning inside of them, called their neshamah, or soul.
Jews have a strong connection with fire. Some even follow the custom to not put out a flame because it is as if you are putting out a
neshamah.
So why is fire so important to the Jews? Are we all pyromaniacs? Let’s go to the specific custom of having a bonfire on Lag
Ba’Omer. Why do we have a bonfire? Why not just spend all day davening like on Yom Kippur or only eat certain foods like on
Pesach?
First, let’s understand why we celebrate Lag Ba’Omer. The most common explanation is that there was a plague across Rabbi
Akiva’s students during the Omer and on the 33rd day it stopped, but this day is not completely filled with happiness. Rabbi
Shimon bar Yochai, a rabbi during the 2nd century, died on this day, but Lag Ba’Omer is a day of celebration. Why are we
celebrating on the day we lost a great rabbi? This discussion seems to bring more questions than answers. Instead of mourning the
loss of this rabbi, we celebrate the life and everything Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai brought into this world. This is the reason we have
bonfires, to celebrate the light of his teachings.
This can also be applied to other possible pyromania holidays. We destroy the chametz with fire to destroy sin with a mitzvah, we
light Shabbat and Chanukah candles to increase the Torah spark within us. All these Mitzvot are about using our inner spark to
find good, sometimes in a dark place. This lesson can be applied to our world today. Instead of mourning the loss of the people
that we are losing, we should celebrate the life they had and all they did that was good for this world. In the place of
being scared, we should light a beautiful (and safe!) bonfire for this holiday.
DIVREI TORAH: Every week, a couple BAYT Youth members will be offering Divrei
Torah. Please print the sheet and have someone read them at your Shabbos
table. If you or someone you know would like to write one,
please contact Rich at [email protected].
