A message from theCarnival Committee

Chairman

Welcome to Carnival 2019, I really cannot believe that a year has pastsince we were last at Carnival.Although Carnival day in 2018 was extremely hot, the attendance figuresgiven to us from the counters at the entrances showed that over 30,000people entered the park on Carnival day.We hope that you will enjoy the day we have organised for you. We try tohave performances from local groups to showcase their work. Please showyour support by watching the arena events and encouraging the performers. The procession floats will be parked on the lower field, by the funfair, duringthe afternoon. The groups that enter them would appreciate you lookingat them before they all leave at 16.00.Please visit the stalls around the field and help the organisers of them toraise funds for their groups, or find out about what they can offer you andyour families.Visit us at the Carnival Information point. Carnival is now a (free)membership organisation, please sign up as a member so that we cankeep you up to date with what we are planning for the future. Being amember does not involve going to meetings and being given jobs to do(unless you want to). There is a form on page 59 to nominate groups to receive a share ofCarnival proceeds - we list the recipients from 2018 on page 7.

Finally, please put Saturday 11th July 2020 in your diary for Carnival 2020.Don’t forget to let us have your ideas for the 2020 theme by 31st July, tobe balloted on our website in August.

Mobiloo – a vehicle for changeMobiloo is the world’s first attended mobile toilet servicewith hoist and changing bench. Having a Mobiloo at a

venue or event means anyone can attend.

There are over a quarter of amillion people in the UK forwhom a standard accessibletoilet does not meet theirneeds. They either need a bitmore space or need to be ableto use an electronic hoist orchanging bench in order to goto the toilet.

The choice facing suchindividuals and their familiesor carers is to simply stay athome or to risk injury andinfection by getting changedon a public toilet floor. Havinga Mobiloo at events or venuesmeans people aren’t forced tomake this choice.

The Mobiloo at Carnival has been provided by Freddie &Friends Sunshine Stop C.I.C with thanks to Leighton-Linslade TownCouncil community grants.

With its roots back in down town Harlem, swing dance hit the UKduring WW2 with an explosion of jazz and swing that provided anemotional escape for young people. This created a culturalrevolution allowing them to abandon their worries and to immersethemselves in the magic of social dancing and music. Nearly 100years later, the swing dance fever is back uniting and connectingus on and off the dance floor. Click here to find out more.

Whatever your age, join our community, learn to dance, and stepforward in time and on to the dance floor to recreate and transformthis magic called Swing Dance!

Greensand CountryGreensand Country covers 40 miles of scenic landscape, which is defined by the Greensand Ridgeand reaches three neighbouring counties, from Cambridgeshire in the East, across Bedfordshire andto Buckinghamshire in the West.

It contains all of Bedfordshire’s remaining heathland, more than half of its woodland and more historicparkland than anywhere else in the country. Enjoy a weekend walk, a rural run, an exhilarating cycleor a gentle trot on horseback in Greensand Country.

About UsThe Greensand Country Landscape Partnership is a Heritage Lottery Funded Programme, estab-lished in January 2017 and working until June 2021 on more than 40 projects that will help raiseawareness of the heritage value of the landscape and to reverse the gradual decline in the distinctlandscape character of this beautiful and loved place.

The vision is that by 2020 the Greensand Country will be a living and working landscape that ischerished by present and future generations

Parks and Open SpacesGreensand Country’s parks and open spaces are perfect for family visits,- letting the kids playoutside, walking the dog or settling down with a picnic.

In the very west of Greensand Country Woburn Abbey Deer Park is home to nine different speciesof deer as well as lots of other wildlife. You can take a drive through the deer park or explore usingone of the public footpaths that cross the park. Nearby Rushmere Country Park at Heath andReach has a visitor centre, cafe, dog fun area, cycle routes, natural play spots and a sculpture trail. There’s a live camera from a heron’s nest to see in the spring and quieter areas of the park are greatfor wildlife, including adders and lizards.

Travelling east, Ampthill Great Park was a royal palace and hunting ground, and the current parkwas created by Capability Brown. The park is now open to the public and has lots of open space toexplore along with stunning views north from the Greensand Ridge. Ampthill Park has a cafe andplay area and runs lots of events through the year.

Scoil Rince Realta, which translates to The Star School of IrishDancing, was established in September 2015 by Dublin nativeMichelle Gannon in Dunstable, Bedforshire. The school has sinceexpanded and now runs weekly classes in Leighton Buzzard andCaddington with almost 40 dancers from the age of four. We do lotsof public performances at local events, school fetes and parades,as well as attend competitions for those that like to. The boys & girlsin the dancing school have grown in so much confidence, made somany wonderful friends, found a love for Irish dancing they neverknew they had, and become one big dance family. If you would like some more information on Irish dancing classesplease contact Michelle on 07847762733 or [email protected]. We also have a very active Facebookpage which can be found at www.facebook.com/scoilrincerealta .I hope you enjoy our performance at Carnival as much as we arelooking for to doing it.

1st Leighton Buzzard Guide Unit opened inNovember 1915 and apart from a short break during the 1st World War, manyVolunteer Leaders have given numerous Guides aged 10 – 15 years so manyvaried opportunities within the aspects of the continuously upgradingGirlguiding programmes to discover, take part in, and’ Have Fun’ doing so!

Girlguiding has something to offer to every girl- making new friends, giving herconfidence in herself by gaining badges on her own, team building in her Patrol, learning new skills, enjoying the out of doors, seasonal crafts and activities.Keeping up to date with current world issues through Girlguiding and Mediaresources.

Guides can attend events and trainings away with other Guides from across theCounty, and as they mature opportunities to travel abroad are available.

The Unit is very active, meeting once a week term times, we have regularcook-outs on wood fires, bivouac sleepovers and night hikes. We usually joinother Guide Units for a week end and a week’s Summer Camp each year, Lastyear we had a contingent attend ‘NORJAM’ The International Scout and GuideJamboree held on the Royal Norfolk Showground. We attend the localpantomime at the Library Theatre each January. We have a good relationshipwith local Rainbow, Brownie and other Guide Units, and meet up with themwhen we attend District, Division and County events.

A girl doesn’t have to have been a Rainbow or a Brownie to join Guides at theage of 10 years.

We aim to hold a fundraising Charity stall once a year on the Saturday LeightonBuzzard Market and have a stall at the May Day Fayre. Money raised helps usto upgrade our equipment, and also towards adding extra activities to ourprogrammes.

The Leaders and Guides thank the Carnival Committee for their donation, whichhas been greatly appreciated and used to buy resources for the Guides andLeaders to commence working on the latest ‘New Guide Programme’ TheLeaders hope to continue to provide opportunities for girls to join the Unit and‘Have Fun’ in the years to come.

We welcome girls who would like to join us to visit our Guide meetings whenthey are approx. a month under 10 years old.
