Finding your entered position• Press the “GOTO” button in the upper right hand

corner of the receiver• Use the arrow key to select the way point name you

just created and press enter• The navigation screen will appear and direct you to

your selected position • Keep an eye on the distance reading in the upper

right hand corner which will progressively decrease as you near your destination

• Due to the slight inaccuracy of the receiver you may never acquire a distance reading of zero

• Once you find the first position you wish to use press the “Mark” key on the right hand side of the receiver

• Use the arrow keys to assign a name to the new point

• Scroll down to “save” and press the enter key• Repeat the same process for three more

locations around campus

Open the Waypoint + software installed on the computers in 208 Walker

Click on GPS next to File, then go to download from GPS, and select waypoint from the sidebar selections.

• Next, select Congifiguration from the Waypoint + file menu, make sure that decimal degrees is selected for coordinates, because this is what your GPS receiver has the waypoints set as, and statute miles is selected under units

• Then, open Datum list, and select WGS84, this is what you want your waypoint data to be referenced as.

• Once Waypoint + software is configured, save your GPS data as a text file by going to File, Save, and click Waypoint from the sidebar selections. Be sure to save the file as a text file.

Edit downloaded data into an appropriate format

• Use Microsoft Excel to open the text file you just created. Once you pick your text file, a series of pop-up dialog boxes will occur. Hit the next button at the first box, then be sure to select the comma button at the second before selecting the finish button at the third.

• Edit the file putting your waypoints and their latitudes and longitudes, from your GPS receiver, into Excel

Integrate GPS data as a layer in ArcMap

• Import map of the west central portion of University Park from a link labeled Project 2b Shapefiles, in the lessons area of the course website. After unzipping the file, go to the Add data button to add the four layers to your map.

• Open data frame properties in ArcMap, and select NAD1983 as your current coordinate system

• The ArcMap software can re-project GPS data to the coordinate system, projection, and datum of the map file

• Next, go to Add XY data in the tools menu and choose your textfile.

• Specify the fields for the x and y coordinates, x being longitude, and y being latitude.

• Add GPS data as a layer in your GIS map of campus, and save a capture of your finished map window
