Partial Quotients
Partial Quotients
• Partial – means a portion of; not a whole• Allows for portions of the quotient (answer) to
be solved• Must add each partial quotient together to
get the final quotient (answer)• Use an easy factor such as 10 to help
Let’s Take a Look
9 356 - 90 9 x 10 266 - 90 9 x 10 176 - 90 9 x 10 86 - 81 9 x 9 5
Multiply the divisor by ten and subtract from the dividend.
Make sure to write what operation you did so you do not forget!
Continue to do the above steps until you can not use the same factor or until the difference is less than the divisor.
Now What?
9 356 - 90 9 x 10 266 - 90 9 x 10 176 - 90 9 x 10 86 - 81 9 x 9 5
Since the difference results in 5 and that is less than 9 we can not create another group.
5 will be our remainder.
Now add the partial quotients together to get your quotient.
These are the numbers that you will add together!
Your Almost Done!
9 356 - 90 9 x 10 266 - 90 9 x 10 176 - 90 9 x 10 86 - 81 9 x 9 5
Add 10 + 10 + 10 + 9 = 39
Do not forget the remainder!
39 r
Check Your Work!
Multiply the quotient by the divisor
Then add the remainder.
Did you get quotient?
You should have!
9 356 - 90 9 x 10 266 - 90 9 x 10 176 - 90 9 x 10 86 - 81 9 x 9 5
39 r 59
X______
351+ 5356
