Visiting the egyptian Pyramids via stansted airport and a

sri lankan cave temple via the albert Bridge, this book takes

us on a Journey of enlightenment. Calling on acknowledged

experts in lighting, it explores the vast space between ‘off’

and ‘on’. along the way, it stops to raise some important

issues: Can light please the soul as well as the eye? should

lighting draw attention to itself or to the space and objects

being lit? Can white light become green?

a general conclusion, not surprisingly, is that simply

accessing light is not enough. light must be orchestrated.

its intensity must be controlled. at the same time, our experts

accept that too many ‘feature’ lights can lead to clutter and

fussiness. they also pay due deference to mother nature,

accepting that the sun is the greatest source of light and that

most successful lighting solutions seamlessly blend natural

and electric light.

discussing the orchestration of light,

our luminaries reveal how they stir the

spirits, create drama and control the

atmosphere. they confirm that rooms

and public spaces have moods too.

and, crucially, they make the point that

light is as important a design tool as

colour, texture and materials. Clearly,

as light shifts from the functional to the

emotional, there is no longer room for

the standard lamp.

We are entering an exciting new era in the world of lighting,

where technology now facilitates a highly sensitive level of

control and the infinite creative options in any brief now

determine that lighting has become an art form in itself.

it is no longer acceptable to simply layer a formulaic lighting

specification onto a physical domain, the lighting should be

intrinsic to the very function of the space in terms of its

emotive power. some of the examples shown in this book

highlight this beautifully. in such cases, the control systems

used to apply the light are the operative base line of a

successful project. the means of controlling light is now

a key factor in that success.

Visible light is but a narrow bandwidth of

the electro magnetic spectrum, the energy

that is fundamental to the way in which

everything works, including life itself.

the deeper awareness we have over its

significance then the more respect we

must give when working with it and using

it to form our landscape and architecture.

Good lighting goes far beyond

considerations of aesthetics and into the

realm of human sensory response, so it

must be applied with responsibility.

IN WHICH BUILDING OR ROOM DO YOU FEEL THE CONTROL OF LIGHT HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE? AND WHY?

I have always loved the use of lighting on Albert Bridge in London. I live close by and I never fail to feel romantic every time I see the lights reflected in the Thames. Due to the simple yet effective use of light bulbs, it has become an iconic landmark in London.Suzanne Imre, Editor, Livingetc

The Command Centre for National Grid Power – it is a 24hr operational environ-ment with no natural lighting. A complete bespoke lighting system integrated within the ceiling was designed to simulate daylight conditions throughout the year as well as on a 24hr cycle. Four different colour temperatures seamlessly fade in and out over hours at a time to create a smooth transition between intensities, and colour temperature. This was achieved by satellite timeclock inputs so every day the lighting condition is synchronised with dusk and dawn.Max von Barnholt, Design Director, VBK Lighting Consultants Ltd

The interior of the Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp by Le Corbusier is strikingly beautiful because of Corb’s inspired control of daylight; the contrast of light and dark to create drama, the use of light to ‘lift’ the roof, roof lights to spotlight focal points within the space.... Wonderful! Fiona McLean, McLean Quinlan Architects

IN WHICH BUILDING OR ROOM DO YOU FEEL THE CONTROL OF LIGHT HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE? AND WHY?

I feel that light control is equally important to the lamps and luminaires as without appropriate control arrangements the full potential of lighting is rarely achieved in most installations. One particularly successful project in terms of appropriate Light Control is Charterhouse School Chapel, where the numerous lighting components were all separately dimmed to provide the potential for infinite variety. The control arrangements meant that emphasis of the Chapel could be smoothly transferred to one part from another depending on the particular activity taking place. Nick Hoggett, Lighting Designer, dpa lighting consultants

The Reading Room at the British Museum designed by Foster & Partners. The augmentation of daylight with artificial lighting is to the untutored eye, almost invisible.

London Eye… It is the landmark of London due in part to lighting.Alex Michaelis, Architect, Michaelis Boyd

The Nordic Pavillion at the Biennale in Venice – the architecture is designed to control the light and the way the roof structure is set up as a double layer of deep perpendicular baffles beautifully filters the natural light into the space in a controlled way.Martin Lupton, Lighting Director at BDP and President of PLDA

Dulwich Picture Gallery. The control of natural daylight and artificial light on the fine art was seamless. Louvers ensure the smooth transition from natural daylight to artificial lighting when natural light begins to fade, thereby maintaining the optimum light level on each picture. Andrew Butchart, Lightplan

Church of Light – Tadao Ando. All his buildings manipulate light in the most incredible way yet you very rarely see a light fitting! Lou Davies, Architect, Michaelis Boyd Associates

The Diamond Club at the Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium – the lighting had to create very different settings for matches, parties and exclusive dinners. Kate Wilkins, Kate Wilkins Lighting Designer Ltd

The example I recall, where the control of artificial light triggered my emotions and left a strong impression with me of how powerful an influence light control can have, was the U2 ‘Pop’ tour in 1997 where cued by the music, the lighting changed to enhance the mood of the song. Changing light coupled with sound, fog, haze and other ingredients, all combining brilliantly to stimulate all human senses. Lee Prince, Light and Design Associates

It allows occupants to adapt their environment. Ask an acoustician the impact of volume control: music in the home is influenced by many factors such as time of day; mood of the listener; the music being played; whether in company or alone etc. If one applies these critera to lighting in the home you start to appreciate what lighting control can offer and more besides. Use LEDs. Turn off lights when they are not needed. This doesn’t need an explanation!Nick Hoggett, Lighting Designer, dpa lighting consultantsUse fluorescent or metal halide

wherever practical. They are the most efficient sources.Jim Morse, Light and Design Associates

Natural light is the only truly sustainable light source – make sure you understand how to manipulate it and integrate it into the design of the building.Martin Lupton, Lighting Director at BDP and President of PLDA

Think where you need light and don’t just put it in.Kate Wilkins, Kate Wilkins Lighting Designer Ltd

Less is more. Isn’t it obvious?Andrew Linwood, Areen Hotel Design

For a general lighting circuit using normal GLS lamps use a dimmer and dim it by 10%. The light output will be very similar, you will save energy but most importantly you will double the lamp life.Andrew Butchart, Lightplan

Commercially, we should be controlling usage – just take a look at a night-time skyline photo of any cosmopolitan city and you will see what I mean. Also, with the realisation of recent light sources, there is little excuse for using Incandescent in commercial or retail applications. This should be dealt with immediately.Max von Barnholt, Design Director, VBK Lighting Consultants Ltd

It is of the utmost importance, without it the top sportsmen and women cannot perform. Lighting specialists did an incredible job with the new Wimbledon Centre Court, it has and I quote ‘changed Wimbledon forever’. They should be congratulated, it is truly innovative and highly effective for the players and spectators – I don’t think they could have done it better!Chris Hollins, BBC Breakfast Sports Presenter.

HOW IMPORTANT IS LIGHTING TO YOU IN THE HOME?

PRIVAtE RESIDENCE, MADRID: installed the lutron homeWorKs® liGht Control system.

You must have fun with it – use it to highlight and spotlight favourite features in a room, wash walls with it, experiment with different colours and never under-estimate its importance or effectiveness.Suzanne Imre, Editor Livingetc.

It would, I think, be a sad day if we reached a point where daylight were to be excluded from our buildings. One can scarcely think of Space, Time and Light in Architecture, if the central element of time and the consequent changes of light and mood which this implies are left out. I hope as a society we will regard this as a challenge… …We don’t after all need to be reminded that we are

not an ‘artificial’ lighting society, despite the fact that this may have been the original impetus in the minds of our founders. We are, and must be seen to be, an ‘Illuminating Engineering Society’ in the fullest sense of what this implies.Derek Phillips, M.arch (MIT) B.arch MCD (L’pool) FCIBSE MILE IALD
