MASS INTENTIONS
Anyone wishing to have mass intentions, dedicate candles or hosts in memory of a loved one, please call the Catholic Community of New Bedford North central office at 508-995-3593.
The 2020 Mass Book is now open through the end of the year.
VOCATION CHALICE Your personal, prayerful and financial support as part of our Collaborative’s Vocation support Association (VSA) is a great blessing for us as a collaborative and in the lives of our me in formation for the
Priesthood! Consider joining the VSA. Our seminarian we are sponsoring is Chris Hughes who is nearly half way through his second year of Pre-Theology. Will YOU promote vocations by hosting the Parish “Vocations Chalice” in your home? If you are interested in hosting and praying for vocations for one week, please sign up by calling 508-995-3593. The chalice case contains an educational DVD and prayers to say each day for one week.
Listen to yourself breathing. So often, we rush into
our times of prayer without properly disposing
ourselves for a spiritual encounter.
The Rosary and Lectio Divina are, for example,
powerful tools for penetrating deeper in the
mysteries of God, but without a stilled soul, our
efforts lack a key ingredient. Taking a few minutes
to quiet ourselves — externally and internally —
can be a tremendous aid in deepening our prayer
life.

to accommodate the growing
number of Collaborative Members attending
the weekend Liturgies.
Starting on Sunday, September 6th, we will
now have an 8:00AM Mass at the St. Mary’s

Faith Formation News:
Last week, our fourth group of 1st
Eucharist candidates included 10
girls and boys who received Jesus
for the very first time in holy
Communion. This week, for the
f inal t ime this year , we
congratulate and pray for God’s many blessings on
the following children of our Collaborative who
received their 1st Eucharist on Saturday morning,
August 15th from Msgr. Oliveira:
Avery Bielski - St. Joseph-St. Therese
Chloe Costa - Our Lady of Fatima
Sofia daCosta - St. Mary
Ethan Dube - St. Joseph-St. Therese
Maklin Fernandez - St. Mary
Fiona Ferreira - St. Joseph-St. Therese
Andrew Medeiros - St. Mary
Clara Pereira - Our Lady of Fatima
Caylee Raposa - St. Mary
Anthony Rodrigues - Our Lady of Fatima
Jack Turgeon - Our Lady of Fatima
We would also like to thank our Catechists and
assistant who worked with these children to help
prepare them for both their 1st Penance and 1st
Eucharist this past season, Melissa Cieto, Michelle
Cieto, Jennifer Castelo, Anne-Marie Jupin and
Clara Medeiros.
A big thank you to our Coordinators Cherie Jupin
(Grades 1-4), Amy Rodgers (Grades 5-7) and Walter
Pires (Confirmation) for going above and beyond to
assist me in getting the 1st Eucharist liturgies
prepped and ready to go during a pandemic. It really
takes a team and they are the best!
In need of Catechists more that ever for Faith
Formation 2020-21
I have been asking for volunteers for some time now
and while I understand we are living in the strangest
times ever, I am coming to our community with an
urgent plea. According to diocesan safe environment
standards, we have to have 2 catechists in a virtual
classroom with our children in order to do online
formation. As of this writing, we will not meet that
requirement for at least 4 catechists have informed
us that they are not returning this year. This means
I really need some willing volunteers to step up and
assist us in helping the parents with the faith
formation of their children for this coming season. As
a baptized Catholic Christian it is one of our duties
to spread the good news of Jesus Christ and now
more than ever our children and youth need to hear
from folks like YOU. Please reach out to me
at [email protected] or call and leave a
message at the Central Office number (508-995-
3593) if you are willing to take on this ministry so I
can speak to you about what opportunities are
available. Training will be provided and, depending
on the grade level, contact with the children in
person may be limited. Thank you.
Catholic Community of New Bedford North
Collaborative Update
August 2020 1. Properties:
a. Our Lady of Fatima: Fr. Raposo has responded favorably to the City’s request and their Hall will be used for
elections this year. It will be a convenience for the citizens from the far North of New Bedford.
b. St. Joseph-St. Therese: Paul Brooks, from the real-estate office of the Diocese, has been contacted recently and
advised us that the sale of the school is still on track but there are some variances that need to be passed and the
pandemic situation has slowed the process.
The rectory has seen some interest from the STARR program and the State Department as a possible rental
property but there is an issue with the building fire alarms. Paul has contacted the fire department and an
engineer to evaluate and design the necessary changes.
We thank Kevin Bellavance for checking on this update.
c. St. Mary’s: As noted previously, St. Mary’s Parish has accepted an invitation from the Diocese to participate in a
solar panel project. The installation of panels on the church, annex and rectory will begin toward the end of the
year. Engineers have already been on site to begin preliminary investigations etc. It is anticipated that this will
pay the parish electrical bills and cover the loan cost as well as provide an excess of electricity which than can be
sold to others. The Diocese will oversee this endeavor. It will also help us in providing a safer environment in
accord with Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudatio Si.
2. Web Sites:
The purpose of the Collaborative is to bring Catholics in the North End together to make Christ known. As we
are experiencing, this will take some time. One of the efforts at this unity has been a united bulletin which serves
all the parishioners and parishes of the Collaborative. We have also formed a core council which represent all
Collaborative parishes. In accord with the Parish Vision Plan, we have formed a Parish Leadership Team which
again includes members from each parish representing different groups as suggested. (Because of the Covid-19
there has not been much movement yet on this project.) Another means to unite us all will be through one Web
page and one Facebook page. Each parish events, liturgical services, fund raisers etc. will be a part of these
pages. As you may be aware, each Web page has an annual cost. In an effort to save money and work toward a
greater unity when the term of the webpage comes up for renewal it will not be renewed.
3. Financial Information:
This past fiscal year St. Mary’s Parish volunteered to pay the salary of our Faith Formation, Youth and Young
Adult director. This was foreseen to be a one-year donation from St. Mary’s to give the Collaborative a help in the
first year. This fiscal year the salary will be absorbed by all three parishes.
When the Collaborative started, a finance/budget analyst from the Chancery was asked to assist in determining
the percentage each parish in the Collaborative would be charged for the cost of operating the central office;
salaries, benefits etc. Based on the number of parishioners, annual income, etc. the percentage decided was: Our
Lady of Fatima 23%; St. Joseph-St. Therese 27%; St. Mary’s 50%. When the census is finished we will know the
number of parishioners. When these number are finalized and figures from this fiscal/pandemic year are
reviewed, it may be necessary to revisit these percentages.
Hopefully the notices prepared and shared for the last few weeks will give each of you some understanding of
where we now stand as a Collaborative. It provides a transparent report to you of how your offerings have been
used in the Collaborative and in your own parish.
Again Fr. Raposo and I am grateful for your generosity, trust, cooperation and assistance as we journey with you on
this new path toward a greater unity and new form of evangelization. All these efforts and sacrifices have as their
ultimate goal making Jesus known and loved in our area now and especially for the years to come. God bless you
and let us keep each other in prayer.

Prayer to St. Thérèse,
the Little Flower
O Glorious St. Thérèse, whom Almighty
God has raised up to aid and inspire the
human family, I implore your miraculous
intercession. I fervently beseech you to
answer my petition…(here state your
request)...and to carry out your promises of
spending Heaven doing good upon earth.
Little Flower of Jesus, give me your
childlike faith, to see the face of God in all
people and experiences of my life, and to
love God with full confidence. Help me to
always believe, as you did, in God’s great
love for me, so that I might imitate your
“little way” each day. Amen.
