Parts of SpeechWhat are the different types of words?

Nouns

• Words that describe a person place or thing • Examples: desk, table, John, Europe, ice cream

• There are abstract nouns too• Feelings: happiness, sadness, joy, depression, pain

• Qualities and Characteristics: honesty, bravery, beauty

• More examples of abstract nouns: wealth, success, education, friendship, marriage, summer

Verbs

• Action words; examples: go, drink, jump, read

• These words can be in different tenses: present, past, future• I go, I went, I will go

• Verbs can also be in different forms: Active Voice, Passive Voice, Infinitive, and Gerund • I ate the cake

• The cake was eaten

• I like to eat cake

• I like eating cake

Adjectives

• These are words that describe nouns:• Beautiful painting

• Large room

• Yellow paint

• They are the same for both singular and plural nouns. No –s is required.• Beautiful painting

• Beautiful paintings

Adverbs

• Describe verbs• The dog ran quickly.

• They also describe adjectives• This movie is very long.

Prepositions

• Prepositions are little words like:• By, with, at, to, toward, for, from, in, on…

• They are followed by NOUNS
