• Plasma

• White Cells

• Platelets

Red blood cellsRed blood cells carry oxygen to the body’s organs and tissues. The inside of the red blood cell is filled with the protein haemoglobin.

White blood cellsWhite blood cells attack invading

microbes that cause disease

They do this in two ways:1. One type of white blood cell produces

chemicals called antibodies. These antibodies lock on to proteins

called antigens on the surface of the microbes.

2. Another type of white blood cell digests any microbes the antibodies lock on to.

Platelets

Platelets are• bits of cell broken off

large cells

They • help blood to clot • and stop bleeding at cuts.

If wound is too large, your blood doesn’t clot. You need a blood

transfusion• Blood transfusion-transfer of blood from one person to next

• Replaces lost blood

• Regularly treat serious blood diseases.

Blood groups• There are four blood groups – A, B, AB and O• Your parents’ blood groups affect what group you

belong to. One gene from mother one gene from father• Your genes cause proteins to exist on surface of all

red blood cells

Clumping Proteins

• These proteins recognize foreign blood and then clump– Ex: if you have blood type A, your blood

will clump when mixed with B

• Clumping= failed transfusion. Clogs capillaries and leads to death
