Celebrating the opening night of #bathmusicfest featuring hundreds of performances for one night only — it’s Bath’s biggest free party!

Friday May 20th from 5.30pm until late, the city will buzz with folk, rock, classical, jazz, acoustic, swing, and soul — all concerts and gigs are free!

The whole evening lifts off with a parade through the streets by local children joined by members of Action on Hearing Loss — they will lead off from Southgate, arriving at the Abbey at 6pm for a special performance by over 100 school children directed by renowned beat-boxer Shlomo.

New this year will be two live open-air stages with festival bars supplied by Honey’s Midford Cider, Electric Bear and The Nest, bringing both Queen Square and Parade Gardens to life with local food and drink stalls — forming our official ‘hubs’. Your favourite bars, clubs and venues across town will showcase performances until late; with everything from rock to opera, jazz to hip-hopera and remember to keep eyes open for the official Sofarsounds secret gig…

The 10 day Bath International Music Festival

continues from Saturday 21st until 29th May. Bath Festivals once again present a soul-stirring mix of music for the entire city, now in its 68th year! With over 45 events, highlights include major international stars such as Nashville-based Lera Lynn from HBO’s True Detective and Canadian folk rock star JP Hoe on a rare visit with his latest album Hideaway.

Three-time Grammy winner, recognised as one of the world’s greatest jazz saxophonists, Branford Marsalis will perform the UK premiere of his special piece In My Solitude for one night only in Bath Abbey. Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino will bring a wild evening of passionate, inspiring music and dance from Southern Italy, re-igniting the ancient Tarantella tradition.

Straight from Broadway, Piaf! The Show, starring Anne Carrere has been hailed by The Times and described as “the best show ever made about the life of Edith Piaf” by Charles Dumont (composer of Je Ne Regrette Rien). Declared as “one of the most gifted singer-songwriters of his generation” by The New York Times, Teddy Thompson will perform at Komedia with Texan singer Kelly Jones.

The world renowned Philharmonia orchestra from London will be performing a thrilling concert of music by Sibelius and Elgar, inspired by the beautiful landscapes of Finland, Tintagel and Venice, at the Forum. Also make sure to book early for a glamorous evening of inspired opera arias from our city’s very own Bath Philharmonia, featuring the acclaimed tenor Hector Sandoval from Mexico. Grammy Award winner Richard Goode will play Schubert’s final three piano sonatas, described by The Washington Post as “an unforgettable performance”.

Festival Commission with Shlomo 18:00 — 18:30Bath Festivals procession and commission puts children at the heart of the festival, celebrating their creativity and place in our community. Local school children and clients from Action on Hearing Loss Educational Day Services have created colourful flags with artist Edwina Bridgeman and will process through the streets of Bath finishing at the Abbey. Here our sparkling choir of school children will perform a brand new piece with acclaimed beatboxer Shlomo. Discover the power of the human voice and see a choir as you’ve never seen them before! This performance will be BSL interpreted.

Project Zulu 18:50 — 19:2024 incredible children bringing their traditional Zulu songs and dances all the way from the Madadeni Township, South Africa. Pure talent and mesmerizing vocals from these wonderful young performers.

Bath Bach Choir 19:35 — 19:55“Choral singing at its best” Bath Chronicle, Bath Bach Choir brings meaning and excitement to music of any era; led by the inspirational conductor Nigel Perrin, this is a performance not to be missed.

Bath Spa University Choir20:05 — 20:25The choir’s performance of Gjeilo’s Evening Prayer, Gorecki’s Totus Tuus and a suite of music by video-game legend Nobuo Uematsu  — this was an audience highlight from last year’s festival.

Bath Welcome Choir 19:00 — 19:20A singing group that are bound to sing familiar and well-loved songs. Grenville Jones is guaranteed to get you to join-in during the performance. Songs and smiles all round.

Enceladus Chamber Choir19:30 — 19:50Made up of professional singers from the South-West, come hear an eclectic range of music covering Baroque to Modern, Gospel to Jazz, and even some film scores.

Colerne Military Wives Choir20:00 — 20:20If you would like to see a Military Wives choir perform special songs linked to our Armed Forces then come along and be entertained. We will make you smile, cry and sing along too!

Noctis 20:45 — 21:15An award-winning chamber choir founded and directed by Francis Faux. Always a highlight, do not miss this unique brand of choral singing with traditional music as well as contemporary arrangements of popular songs, film scores and jazz standards.

Jo Quail 21:30 — 22:00The classical musical world is slowly being transformed by a new wave of performers — cellist Jo Quail is a prime example. Internationally acclaimed for her monumental soundscapes, recently wowing audiences at the Adelaide Fringe and Wave Gotik Treffen in Germany, we recommend arriving early for this highly-anticipated performance.

La Brigata Dance Theatre 19:00A site specific dance performance honouring Bath’s own Roman Deity Sulis Minerva. Goddesses with 10ft wings will embody the Celtic deity and transform the Circus, celebrating Bath and its architectural mimicry of both Ancient Rome and Stonehenge.

The Bath Chorus 20:35 — 20:55Grenville Jones has an enviable reputation for his many successful choir groups that have toured Europe, New Zealand, Canada and Japan. He has worked with the likes of Disney/DreamWorks. The Bath Chorus is his auditioned choir, a highly entertaining group of international standing.

Young Carers South West21:15 — 22:00Young Carers South West and Bath Community Gospel Choir presents ‘A Journey to the Centre of the Earth’! Original music composed by the Wiltshire Young Carers with the help of Bath Philharmonia’s ‘Music in Action’ team. ‘Music in Action’ have worked with Young Carers all over the South West over the past 5 years creating original music to celebrate the dedication and compassion shown by these incredible young people. This is set to be a night to remember and you will be sure to go home singing or whistling our catchy tunes.

Mac Seka 18:30 — 19:10Mac Seka is a Senegalese singer songwriter. His fingerstyle guitar blends West African rhythms with folk and country melodies, to create beautiful unique harmonies.

Broose Dickinson 19:20 — 20:00Broose established himself in Texas, as an influential singer songwriter, collaborating with bands such as Pop Poppins and TOOMuchTV. Broose will be performing some well loved originals from his accomplished solo catalogue.

The Man From Washington20:00 — 20:40The Man In Washington is Chris Yeoh, a singer-songwriter from Bath. His songs are sparsely composed with lyrical depth, touching on personal themes of religion, loneliness, and regret. His debut album “Sea Green”, the true story of one mans solo journey into the ocean, was released in early 2016.

BATH BREW HOUSE

Soeur 19:00 — 19:45A dual-fronted three-piece making pop songs drenched in grunge-heavy noise, with math-rock seeping through the seams. Worcester raised, Bristol based.

Sam Evans Band 19:45 — 20:30Ahead of their headline slot at The Nest, this Bristol based 5-piece are playing an acoustic set that is a blend of reggae, funk & blues with a passion for making music for people’s wellbeing.

Broken Bones Matilda20:45 — 21:30The songwriting collaboration between Dom Sky and Sam Gotley with the husky lead vocals of Sarah Mcgrigor. Emotive alt-rock underpinned by mellifluous double bass, deft guitar and Sam’s smoky-tinted vocals.

Meeking 22:00 — lateSoaring vocals sit above a power-house trio dishing out classy blues rock with nods to Jeff Buckley and John Mayer. Meeking are currently recording their highly anticipated debut album set for release in 2016.

MC for the nightTim Vosper Tim performs his own charismatic and energetic style of poetry all over the UK, including a recent performance at the Albert Hall in London. His poems are short, quirky and silly, covering a diverse range of cutting edge issues such as his favourite dance moves and a hedgehog called Dave.

Keep an eye out for our exciting street performers throughout the city ...  the ever-popular Jamma de Samba injecting colour into our sandstone laneways with their rhythms and spontaneous hip-hop beats. The much loved Natural Theatre Company will also delight passers-by with absurd walkabout theatre and interactive performances. Discover circus, physical theatre and dance by Circomedia or wander to the Abbey Courtyard to cross paths with the Widcombe Mummers’ street pantomime and traditional Morris Dancing with Mr Wilkins’ Shilling.
