Sierra Madre Rose Float Association Wants You

Construction “Blitz” Slated for Saturday Nov 6

BY TERRY MILLER

In this volunteer driven community, it seems one of the

most visible non-profit associations, the Sierra Madre Rose Float Asso-ciation, is severely lack-ing in that department. The amount of people and man hours it takes to create this indepen-dent float is phenom-enal. Volunteers are needed now!

The building of the Rose Float really starts the day after New Year’s Day - and continues through-out the year with the final push being on the last two weeks in December.

What the average per-son may not realize is that the construction process and preparations including welding, carpintry are crit-ical in making a safe and beautiful award winning float which the Association has managed to produce five years in a row now.

Ask Your Doctor Letter to the Editor

Don’t you love all the commercials on TV for the won-

derful, amazing drugs that will cure your ailment but may kill you in the process. Well, here is one my friend sent me from the internet that I really think may de-serve some thought :

*Do you have feelings of inadequacy?

*Do you suffer from shyness?

*Do you sometimes wish you were more asser-tive?

*Do you suffer ex-haustion from the day to day grind?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist about Margaritas.

Margaritas are the safe, natural way to feel better and more confident about yourself and your actions. Margaritas can help ease you out of your shyness and let you tell the world that you’re ready and willing to do just about anything. You will notice the benefits of Margaritas almost immediately and with a regiment of regular doses you can overcome any obstacles that prevent you from living the life you want to live.

Shyness and awkward-ness will be a thing of the past and you will discover

many talents you never knew you had. Stop hid-ing and start living, with Margaritas.

Margaritas may not be right for everyone. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not use Margaritas. However, women who wouldn’t mind nursing or becoming pregnant are encouraged to ty it.

Side effects may in-clude:

-Dizziness-Nausea-Vomiting-Incarceration-Erotic lustfulness-Loss of motor control-Loss of clothing-Loss of money-Headache-Dehydration-Dry mouth-And a desire to sing

K a r a -oke

WARNINGS;*The consumption of

Margaritas may make you think you are whispering when you are not.

*The consumption of Margaritas may cause you to tell people over and over again that you love them

*The consumption of Margaritas may make you think you can sing.

*The consumption of Margaritas may make you think you can logically converse with members of the opposite sex without spitting.

Ask your doctor if Margaritas are right for you.

There I stood in the garden department of a huge home im-

provement store, shopping for dirt. I could scarcely be-lieve it! I, who had grown up on a farm, where there was dirt a-plenty. I, who had until recently owned a sizeable city lot, and had dug and hoed and weeded in virtually every square foot of its dirt.

But now, in my down-sized retirement home, two small plots of dirt were all

I had to dig and plant in. First I’d tried some petu-nias in the corner by our sidewalk. They blossomed stalwartly, creating a wel-coming spot of red. For a while. Then they began a long, slow withering, fad-ing finally into nothing-ness. Petunias are so reli-able that one could almost consider them a weed, if they weren’t so pretty. So why did they die?

Green-thumb sleuth that I am, I hit upon a clue. Not even weeds grew in that spot. Surely, I decid-ed, the soil must be tired and worn out.

And that’s why I was standing in this garden department, looking in amazement at the selection of huge sacks of dirt on the shelves. I’d resigned myself to stirring in some fresh new soil before I planted the six-pack of or-

ange marigolds, but little had I imagined that I’d have so many kinds of dirt to choose from.

Here was something called garden gro-mulch; it’s for garden beds and trees. That might work. Then again there’s top soil. Somehow that sound-ed like a layer to put atop the existing soil, rather like frosting on a cake. No, my problem probably goes deeper than that, I decid-ed.

Compost sounded environmentally sound. I’d carefully composted our kitchen waste and the grass from our lawn mow-ings at our earlier home. Still—which one? Planting compost, or soil-enriching compost?

Lawn topping obvi-ously wasn’t for me; I’m not trying to put new soil on top of grass. Palm and cactus mix—nope. “Good for azaleas and camel-lias”—nope, not that either.

Here’s soil amender for clay soils, but I really hadn’t analyzed my four square feet of soil, and had no idea whether it was clay, loam, or sand. Nor did I want sphagnum peat moss. Better try for some-thing more generalized.

Potting soil—you could get all-natural potting soil. “All natural?” What an overused euphemism!

Isn’t all dirt “natural”? But since I wasn’t putting the dirt into pots, I moved on down the aisle.

One thing was ruled out on the spot—manure blend. My childhood farm memories of manure’s pervasive odor made that decision easy.

Finally I found a bag that sounded about as ge-neric as you can get with commercial dirt. It said it was “garden soil” for “in-ground use.” I chose a size

that was liftable and toted it to the car. At home, I opened the garage door to get my shovel and trowel. I was ready to give my six little marigolds a great send-off in new dirt in my entry walk plot.

Then—imagine my surprise to find that we already had an almost-full bag of dirt on a garage shelf! I could have saved all that quandary over which kind of dirt to buy, for one look at the old bag’s label told me that it, like my new one, was “garden soil” for “in-ground use.”

It was my pleasure on Friday night to attend the San Gabriel Valley Coun-cil, Boy Scouts of America dinner to honor Mayor Mary Ann Lutz with the 2010 Distinguished Citizen Award. Hosted by the San Gabriel Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America and Lucky Baldwin Dis-trict Chairman and Arca-dia City Council Member, Robert C. Harbicht. This

award is given to honor prominent area leaders who have a wide influence in the business and profes-sional community, while serving as exemplary role models for our young peo-ple. Mary Ann Lutz’s con-tributions to the quality of life in our community and her commitment to youth and the values of Scouting make her a particularly ap-propriate honoree.

Speaking to a room full of community leaders you could certainly tell that Mary Ann was pleased

with receiving this award, and her words clearly re-flected the sentiment of Scouting, “The reason this award is so special is because of the organiza-tion that stands behind it. I believe there is no better way to express it than by stating this: The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.” Mary Ann has a personal con-nection to scouting as well,

her four brothers were scouts and her nephew be-came an Eagle Scout two years ago, and she said, “I know personally how that achievement has changed his life.” She went on to highlight the positive re-sults of Scouting and noted some Eagle Scout projects in our community includ-ed work in Canyon Park, painting and cleaning area schools, churches and community areas. In addi-tion, a current project will post identifying markers for historic walking tours in our community.

BY LYNDA LINFORTH

Heal Your Heel

Recently, there has been a rise in heel pain in my clients.

This has prompted me to do some extensive re-search into this area, and I have found some interest-ing results. Many cases of heel pain are caused by: inflammation of the fas-cia between the heel and the sole or a past injury that causes a change in gait or bruising. Probably the most common cause is steady weight gain fol-lowed by inactivity. This causes an unnatural load on the most sensitive part of the foot. However, athletes are not exempt. There is a high percentage of active people that suf-fer from repetitive injuries (tendonitis, bruising and plantar fascitis) and espe-cially those who partake in high impact activities such as running, sports and aer-obics, seem to be at high risk if they do not take pre-cautions.

The following chronic heel disorders that my cli-ents have reported have been diagnosed by their doctors:

Plantar fascitis: in-flammation of the fascia between the heel and the sole.

Bone spurs: a projec-tion or abnormal growth of the bone.

Bruised calcaneus (heel bone): He fell from a considerable height onto his foot.

Achilles tendonitis: damage done to the calca-neal (Achilles) tendon that has never healed, resulting in swelling, tenderness and pain.

Symptoms of the

above disorders can be very similar for each prob-lem, and are therefore of-ten misdiagnosed. A bone spur can be detected easily by an X-ray, therefore this should be your first port of call. Other symptoms in-clude: tenderness in heel; difficulty walking in very flat shoes; pain after sleep-ing in one position and difficulty walking in the morning; pain during im-pact activity.

I have found that a small number of people tried to push through the pain. These people were the athletes or those who chose not to see a doctor. Unfortunately, this only compounds the problem and will often result in:

Continued chronic pain in heels

Change of gait, which can lead to abnormal bio-mechanics and this affects the knee, hip and lower back, causing pain and damage

Muscle cramping in the gastrocnemius and so-leus (calf muscles), ham-strings & lower back

Shorting of the gas-trocnemius and soleus causes misuse of joints and muscles in the lower body and can cause muscles to tear

If you are adamant about healing your heel, then a visit to the doctor is the way to begin. The first priority is to get the inflam-mation down. This can be done with anti-inflammato-ries and applying ice to the affected area. If pain per-sists, then often a GP will prescribe cortisone injec-tions. Cortisone shots are only a temporary solution to the pain. However, this numbing type agent will al-

low the client to perform exercises and stretches that will help without causing them pain. There are two down sides to this: 1) you can’t feel if you are doing further damage to your heel 2) cortisone, over time, can wear down the muscles and connective tis-sue in the area of the injec-tion. Doctors recommend only three shots in the same place in a lifetime. If you are diagnosed with a bone spur, then usually the only way to remove it is surgery. The spur is re-moved and the bone is left smooth.

Here are some ways that you can aid the heal-ing process:

Do not resort to wear-ing completely flat shoes, this will only aggravate a very tight area. Wear com-fortable elevated shoes or tennis shoes.

Stretch calves and hamstrings daily, or when-ever they feel very tight. Do not stretch a cold mus-cle: stretch after activity.

Ice regularly. Getting the inflammation down is critical to recovery.

welding it into the shape of palm fronds, bougain-villea vines and citrus trees.

The float also will need to be covered in foam in prepa-ration for the flowers which will be placed the day or so be-fore the parade.

The theme of the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade is “Building Dreams, Friend-ships and Mem-ories.” Sierra Madre’s entry is titled “Sueños de California,” which translates to “Dreams of C a l i f o r n i a . ” The design highlights Cali-fornia’s Latino heritage by re-membering the pioneers who built our Golden State.

At the front of the float a burro draws a cart laden

with produce to market. Magnificent monarch but-terflies flutter overhead, alighting on Mission San Carlos Borromeo. Señori-

tas gather by a glistening fountain in a courtyard

blooming with bougainvil-lea, saguaro, prickly pear and citrus trees. Colorful folk dancers will perform

alongside the float as it goes down Colorado Blvd on Jan 1 2011.

Everyone who partici-pates in the float construc-

tion blitz will have the op-portunity to see the domes

mounted on the Mission bell tow-ers.

Once the domes are in place they SMRFA plans on driving the float outside the barn and test the hydraulics that will raise the towers 30 feet into the air/ Tests will also be conducted on the animation systems that’ll operate the giant Monarch butter-flies and a Burro driven cart.

If you’ve never worked on the Rose Float and want to learn what it takes to get this mas-sive undertaking from inception to

completion for Colorado Blvd., this is a perfect time to do just that.

The Friends of the Lev-itt Pavilion Pasadena will host their 7th annual fun-draising gala on Sunday, November 7th. This glam-orous event entitled The Golden Age of Hollywood is taking place at the elegant 1920’s Masonic Temple in Pasadena and will honor the citywide contributions of Dr. Floraline Stevens and the Mijares Family.

This captivating eve-ning will begin at 5:30pm and features a delicious, gourmet dinner provided by the Spot, organic wine by Frey Vineyards, silent and live auctions, and en-tertainment by 2010 Levitt season favorites, Magnolia Memoir (labeled “sweet, sexy, nuanced, evocative, and deeply moving” by the Huffington Post). The historic Pasadena Masonic Tempe is located on 200 South Euclid Avenue, Pasa-dena, CA 91101. Individual tickets and sponsorships start at $200.00.

“The Golden Age of Hollywood was a magical era that represented glam-our, passion, great enter-tainment, and an escape from the struggles of daily life.” Jill Pearson, gala chair notes, “At the same time that the Golden Age of Hol-lywood was commencing a golden bandshell was built with much the same inten-tion in Pasadena’s beloved Memorial Park…”

This golden bandshell became known as the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts when the Mortimer Levitt Foundation restored it to its full grandeur 8 years ago. The inspiration behind this monumen-tal reconstruction was the

Levitt Pavilion Pasadena – a non-profit organization that entertains over 55,000 residents of Pasadena and the greater LA area every summer with free, quality, live music under the stars. Today, the Levitt Pavilion Pasadena has presented over 400 concerts uniquely created to appeal to audi-ences of all ages, back-grounds and tastes. Their free summer series features a roster of Grammy award-winners, international stars, local favorites, and touring artists representing a kalei-doscope of music genres, countries, and cultures.

By attending The Golden Age of Hollywood, guests will have an exclu-sive opportunity to support the Levitt’s free summer concert series by participat-ing in live and silent auc-tions featuring one of a kind items and priceless experi-ences. Pearson explains, “In order for us to continue bringing the gift of music to the Pasadena community without charging admission we must raise funds. Our annual gala is one of the most significant ways, we bring in revenue to support our popular series.”

2010 Honorees:The Mijares Family90 years ago, Jesucita

Mijares, who had fled the Mexican revolution search-ing for a new life for her family, opened a small tor-tilla factory in her home in

Pasadena. Her tortilla busi-ness expanded and Jesucita began providing meals for guests, who came back again and again for a taste of traditional Mexican dish-es. During the late 1970’s their continuous commit-ment to family, traditional food, and excellent hospi-tality led to the opening of a second location on Wash-ington Blvd. which still ex-ists to this day. Today the Mijares restaurant has be-come a Pasadena staple, and is one of the area’s old-est businesses. The Mijares family not only exemplifies the values of hard work and family, but also believes in the importance of giving back to the community by supporting local charities.

Dr. Floraline StevensDr. Floraline I. Stevens

served on the Levitt Pavil-ion Pasadena’s Board of Directors for six years. Her expertise in the areas of education and evaluation were invaluable to the or-ganization’s efforts to make programming more acces-sible for underserved com-munities and implement music education programs for youth. For 39 years, Dr. Stevens worked in the Los Angeles Unified School District as a teacher, evalu-ation specialist, testing co-ordinator, assistant director for research and evaluation, and director of research and evaluation. Dr. Stevens has been nationally recog-nized for her work in these fields. Today, she consults for numerous education-al and testing programs throughout the county and is actively involved in lo-cal charities that promote diversity.

Senior Moments

BY LISA MAGNO

Polishing the “GOLDEN YEARS”

It’s always the first line that’s the hardest to write...I want to say it

all to you, catch your inter-est and have you hanging on my every word. Hm-mmm any ideas?

I will be writing about a subject that has been near and dear to my heart most of my adult life: Protecting seniors in our community. It seems like such a simple task: love them, call them once in a while and make sure there is food in their refrigerators.

Sadly, today it’s so much more.. .seems like one day all the “bad”

people woke up and said...OMG we have an un-tapped well of people to exploit.! Who are those people? Our SENIOR CITIZENS.

Our elders have lived through the “Ozzie and Harriet” days, they knew the “Fuller Brush” man, they bought encyclopedias

from a door-to-door sales-man, the ringing sound outside meant ice cream or Helms Bakery was on your block. Is it just me or does anyone remember the back doors flying open on the Helms Bakery truck and long, wooden drawers opening up to warm jelly-filled donuts for about twenty cents?

That’s where our lo-cal seniors come from.

Then there is today, when someone comes to the door in a uniform car-rying a clip board, how many senior citizens would trust enough to let them in

to check the water heater or air conditioner? You might shake your head and think, “does anyone really believe this kind of e-mail that says they have inherited 2.5 million dol-lars from a distant relative in Somalia or won millions in a sweepstakes?”

The answer is Yes, in

this area, our senior citi-zens DO open their house to strangers and have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars to internet scams....so what can we do about this?

That’s what this proj-ect will be about. I believe education is power! I will write columns every other issue with information about what scams are at-tacking our seniors in the San Gabriel Valley. I will gather and share my best resources, which of course are my friends, and we will share with you every-thing we know about com-

bating elder exploitation and abuse.

Together we can help seniors to make their “gold-en years” less tarnished.

Alzheimer’s dis-ease is a brain disorder named

for German physician Alois Alzheimer, who first described it in 1906.

As many as 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Al-zheimer’s destroys brain

cells, causing memory loss and problems with think-ing and behavior severe enough to affect work, life-long hobbies, family life, and social relationships.

With the disease now being detected in adults in their 30’s and 40’s, we have to ask:

“Knowing this link al-lows us to postulate that an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s could be as simple as devising a pro-cess to remove the excess calcium ions from calcium-

overloaded neurons and thereby restore normal neuronal function.”

Underwood says Quincy’s own study con-firmed that cognitive func-tion could be improved by lowering neuronal cal-cium concentrations with a “calcium binding” protein

found in jellyfish. Underwood says a key

difference between nor-mal, healthy individuals and those with Alzheim-er’s disease is the rate at which healthy neurons become overloaded with calcium.

“Humans are born able to manufacture their own calcium-binding pro-teins but we gradually stop producing them at about age 40, and that’s when our neurons start to weak-en and we begin to expe-

rience mild memory loss,” says Underwood. “Those with Alzheimer’s appar-ently stop producing these proteins at a faster rate so their cognitive impairment occurs with greater veloc-ity.”

Underwood says he is confident that a drug for

Alzheimer’s can be de-veloped incorporating the jellyfish calcium-binding protein.

“We have shown that normal adults can improve their memory, focus, and concentration by lowering their neuronal calcium,” says Underwood. “We are very optimistic that the same compound can now be tested on Alzheimer’s patients to assess their level of cognitive improvement.”

some of her research dur-ing a unique fundraising presentation at the Arcadia Woman’s Club Wednes-day afternoon for about 100 guests. Although Sal-ke’s work is primarily fo-cused on women’s’ issues in Afghanistan, she quickly pointed out how important it is to get men involved in the care of their wives, mothers or sisters in a so-ciety that doesn’t value women as highly as men.

Salke showed video tape of a young woman who was forced into an unhappy marriage for the sole purpose of bearing children for her husband – the young woman was deeply saddened by her situation and had to find a clinic that would help her. While her husband didn’t believe in birth control, she felt an IUD might be an answer for her situation without her husbands’s knowledge.Salke’s female led non-for profit organiza-tion is focused on repro-ductive rights of women not only in Afghanistan but also Iran and Sierra Leon.

Look in next week’s edition for more details on the presentation.

Whitman, who may have spent more money than any other candidate in his-tory conceded in Univer-sal City Tuesday night: “Tonight has not turned out quite as we had hoped,” she told supporters gathered at her “victory party”. “We’ve

come up a little short but certainly not for lack of hard work, determination and a clear vision for making our state better.”

Alvaro G Day, original-ly from Peru, the youngest candidate for the 44th State Assembly district managed to get 32.1% of the vote, but not enough to send Anthony Portantino packing.

On the local level there was little surprise, Adam Schiff; David Dreier both retained their seats.

Tim Donnelley, Tea Party Republican, won the race for California’s 59th State Assembly District, which includes Sierra Madre

and Monrovia. Anthony Ad-ams did not seek re-election.

During the campaign, Donnelly used rather exces-sive and war like language to get his point across say he would “annihilate his op-ponents” during one ‘Tea Party Express’ whistle stop

tail gate party.Republicans seized con-

trol of the House on Tues-day and dwindled the Dem-ocratic divide in the Senate and lunged “tea party” in-surgents into power.

If any Tea Party or constitutional conserva-tive group nation-wide had their pick of any candidate to stand up in a local race, they chose candidate John Colbert, running to replace Adam Schiff in California’s CD29 (Pasadena/Burbank). Colbert got only 41,435, or 31.7% of the vote. Nowhere near has the 85,000 plus voted the incumbent Adam

Schiff received.The election results, a

gain of 60 seats for Repub-licans, amounted to the big-gest turnover since they won 52 House seats in 1994 — the last time Democrats con-trolled both Congress and the presidency.

The real winners of this election are the Television stations who inwardly di-gested Meg Whitman’s

millions in ad dollars. Republicans won House seats in virtually ev-ery part of the country. The Democrats fared bet-ter in races for the Senate, hanging onto the major-ity by a handful of seats. Leader Harry Reid of Ne-vada was reelected over tea party favorite Sharron Angle who wanted the media only to ask ques-tions she wanted to answer.

The Sen-ate contests p r o d u c e d mixed re-sults for the nascent tea party movement. Rand Paul, a found-er of the K e n t u c k y b r a n c h , n o t c h e d a victory, Marco Ru-bio won in Florida and Mike Lee won in Utah. But

Christine O’Donnell lost in Delaware, a seat both par-

ties had put in the GOP category until the centrist Rep. Michael N. Castle lost the Republi-can primary. In Nevada, Angle was also seen as the weakest of Reid’s potential op-ponents.

State Superinten-dent of Public Instruction Jack

O’Connell announced today that implemen-tation of the Califor-nia Longitudinal Pu-pil Achievement Data System (CALPADS), the state’s longitudinal education data system, has led to great prog-ress in enrolling eligible children for free meals without the need to complete any additional paperwork. O’Connell warned that further progress to efficiently enroll hungry students in school nutrition pro-grams will be delayed as a result of the Gov-ernor’s veto of funding for CALPADS.

“Since the integration of our school nutrition certification program with CALPADS last August, school districts have en-rolled hundreds of thou-sands of eligible, hungry children in school nutrition programs,” O’Connell said. “School meal pro-grams ensure that Califor-

nia children are ready to learn, grow, and become successful adults. In these tough economic times, school nutrition programs provide the only consis-tently healthy meals for many students, who would otherwise go hungry.

“By utilizing CAL-PADS, districts were able to directly certify an ad-ditional 212,000 students for free meals in just three months, about a 47 per-cent increase from the pre-vious year’s total when the California Department of Education used a system other than CALPADS. The students were imme-diately eligible for free, healthy lunches and break-fasts at school, and dis-tricts eliminated hundreds of thousands of pages of paperwork. The Gover-nor’s short-sighted veto of CALPADS funding means system improvements that could directly certify another 10 to 30 percent more students are now on hold.”

Currently more than 2.1 million students in

California public school districts are eating a free or reduced-priced lunch, but more than a million other students are eligible and do not participate in the program. With the in-tegration into CALPADS, California has enhanced its ability to serve disad-vantaged students because districts no longer have to upload data into another system for the direct certifi-cation to occur.

“Through direct certification using CALPADS, we were able to increase the number of students who qualified for free meals by 54 percent — that is significant in my book,” said Kathy Dren-nen, Director of Child Nu-trition Services for Lincoln Unified School District. “CALPADS has increased accuracy and is saving us time and money. The best benefit is that it is allowing us to provide nutritious meals to students whose families, for one reason or another, have neglected to apply for participation in school nutrition programs.

These hungry students come to school with no money. Because of CAL-PADS, we no longer have to spend a lot of time and effort trying to contact the students’ parents or guard-ians in order to give them access to free or reduced-priced meals.”

In the three months since CALPADS was in-tegrated with California’s

award- winning school nu-trition direct certification process, 662,000 children have been directly certi-fied, representing a 47 per-cent increase in just three months compared to the 450,000 students directly certified last school year through the state system that did not use CAL-PADS). The Governor’s veto of funding for CAL-

PADS has put on hold the California Department of Education’s plans for CALPADS enhancements that would allow between 70,000 and 200,000 addi-tional students to be direct-ly certified for free school meals in the coming year.

On December 4 and again on March 19, 2011, Esotouric, the eclectic bus adventure company whose offbeat tours ex-pose L.A.’s secret history, offers its popular, occa-sional Pasadena Confiden-tial tour, a true crime bus adventure delving deep into the weird and ghastly past of one of L.A.’s most exclusive suburbs. Making a special appearance on this tour is “Crimebo the Crime Clown.”

Tour guide Kim Coo-per, who also researched and wrote the tour, says, “I believe every neigh-borhood gets the crimes it deserves, and Pasade-na’s dark side is suitably rife with rocket scientists driven mad by their work, wealthy eccentrics spoil-ing their pet chimps and bears, seemingly respect-able families misbehaving behind tall hedges and a general air of genteel psy-chic decay.”

The four-hour guided

luxury bus tour to the darkest recesses of Pasa-dena history, with vintage photos and film clips show to set the scene, will depart at high Noon on Dec 4. From celebrated cases like the Robert Kennedy as-sassination (Sirhan Sirhan was a local Pasadena resi-dent), “Eraserhead” star Jack Nance’s strange end, black magician/rocket sci-entist Jack Parsons’ death-by-misadventure and when the 1926 Rose Pa-rade grand stand collapse, to fascinating obscurities, the tour’s multitude of murders, arsons, kidnap-pings, robberies, suicides, auto wrecks and oddball happenings provide an al-ternate history of Pasadena that’s truly staggering and somewhat ghastly.

Crime Bus passen-gers will tour the old Mil-lionaire’s Row on Orange Grove, discover details of the shocking Sphinx Murder on the steps of the downtown Masonic Hall,

thrill to the misadven-tures of one very poorly-

behaved (but beautifully dressed!) chimpanzee and

discover why people named Judd and rocket

scientists should think twice before moving to

With the pilot for HBO’s highly a n t i c i p a t e d

“Luck” already complete, pro-duction for season-one will resume at Santa Anita this com-ing Sunday, Oct. 31. Both the pilot and first season are scheduled to air in the fall of 2011.

“Luck” is the creation of world renowned writer/producer David Milch, who also created such blockbust-er hits as “Hill Street Blues,” “NYPD Blue,” and “Dead-wood.” Milch, who is also a multiple Breeders’ Cup winning Thoroughbred owner, is an ardent sup-porter of horseracing and has long wanted to due an episodic series of this nature, which will take the

audience inside the sport in a very creative and in some cases, stark way.

The pilot, which was shot almost entirely at Santa Anita, was enthusi-astically received by HBO executives and the cast, in-cluding actors Dustin Hoff-man, Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz and re-

tired Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, will remain intact for season-one. It is also expect-ed that current jockey, Chantal Sutherland, will appear in a num-ber of episodes.

“Touch wood, I think it’s going to be an in-credible series,” said Stevens, who made his highly acclaimed debut as an actor in 2003’s block-buster hit movie “Seabiscuit.”

“I’m very excited about produc-tion resuming,” continued Stevens. “This is going to be a very can-did and very vivid look at our sport. ‘Luck’ has every right to be a winner on every level—from the acting to production, di-recting and writing, I really think this series is going to blow people away.”

Pete Siberell,

Santa Anita Community and Events Coordinator, has been closely involved

with “Luck” from its incep-tion.

“As we’ve said be-fore, David (Milch) has a heart-felt passion for racing and he’s going to present the sport in a way that it never has,” said Si-berell. “He’s going to be

developing characters and plot lines that people can identify with and embrace.

Although he’s going to be exploring some dark areas on occasion, we believe very strongly that he’s go-ing to be able to connect with a wide-ranging audi-ence, perhaps in a way similar to ‘The Sopranos,’ which also aired on HBO.”

The first epi-sode of season-one will be shot at Santa Anita and at

Rod’s Diner, a nearby cof-fee shop on H u n t i n g t o n Drive. Film-ing will also take place at the 100 to One Club, a cock-tail bar just east of Santa Anita’s Gate 5.

Ac-tion in the first episode in-cludes interac-tion at Santa Anita’s Clock-ers’ Corner, box seat area,

winner’s circle, paddock and barn area. Action will also emanate from Santa Anita’s press box, and Racing and Operations of-fices.

Santa-Anita’s upcoming winter/spring meeting, runs from Dec. 26 through April 17.

advocating for paperless ways of enrolling low-income students in the meal programs” says Ken Hecht, Executive Direc-tor of the California Food Policy Advocates. “This new data show that with the CALPADS match, we can indeed use technology to efficiently serve needy families. Less paper is good for schools and good for families.”

CALPADS au-tomates this process by us-ing student data that school districts have already en-

tered into the system. The National

School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program play an important role in providing nutritious meals for low-income chil-dren at little or no charge. These programs benefit children’s overall health, and research indicates that well-nourished children have fewer behavioral problems in school, lower absenteeism, and better academic performance, in-cluding higher test scores.

Alverno’s X-Country runners are working very

hard preparing for the Horizon League finals on Wednesday, Novem-ber 3rd. The runners have competed in 3 meets within the last 8 days and at each meet, most have improved their personal bests at each course.

It started with the Ho-rizon League meet hosted by Alverno at Eaton Can-yon on October 22nd. The weather seemed to motivate the Jaguars to improved performances as the JV squad won and the Varsity did not falter in the League standings.

At the 63rd Annual Mt. Sac X-Country Invita-tional held on Friday, Oc-tober 22nd, Jaguar runners improved their finish times from last year’s competi-tion. The 3-mile rugged course has switchbacks and several up hills, one aptly named “Poop Out

Hill”. Division 5 Varsity Girls race had 208 runners that finished. Al-verno, placing 15th in the Team com-petition, was led by Eryn Blakely, who earned a medal for 12th place finish with a time of 20:09, Audrey Davy came in 27th with a fin-ish time of 21:53. Contributors to the team effort were Ashley Haylett, Bi-anca Melkonian, Miranda Akkari and Sascha Rose-mond.

Running for their first time at the Mt. Sac Invita-tional and compet-ing among the 202 runners in the Di-vision 5 Freshman race were Bella Daniels-Campos, Victoria Pintado, Francesca Rueda and Reagan Dowd. Adrianna Martinez competed in the Di-vision 5 Sophomore

race which had 191 runners.

In their final regular League meet on October 27th, the Jaguar Varsity and JV squads defeated their opponent Bishop Conaty but came in 2nd be-hind Sacred Heart. First place finisher and varsity run-ner Eryn Blakely continued her as-sault of the Griffith Park rugged 3-mile course with a per-sonal best time of 18:58. At earlier races this season, Blakely has posted finishing times of 21:07 (Bell-Jeff In-vitational on 9/25) and 19:35 (against Sacred Heart on 10/3). Senior Au-drey Davy not feeling 100% fin-

ished 3rd with a time of 21:28. Her varsity Jaguar team-mates following her were Jessica Lopez,

Francesca Rueda, Bianca Melkonian, Ashley Haylett and Miranda Akkari.

The JV squad contin-ues to significantly improve their finishing times. They are looking forward to cap-turing a Horizon League championship. Next on their radar is the Horizon League finals meet on No-vember 3rd likely to be held at Eaton Canyon.

At the Griffith Park course on October 27th meet, finishing 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 11th were Adrianna Martinez, Sas-cha Rosemond, Bella Daniels-Campos, Andrea Gochez-Wilson and Rea-gan Dowd for a team score of 31 to Sacred Heart’s score of 27 (1st , 2nd, 5th, 9th, 10th). Rounding out the JV squad were Victo-ria Pintado, Devny Osuna, Holly Coates, Madi Dan-iels-Campos and Nicolette Rodriguez.

Around 4:10 p.m., units responded to the 1400 block of Rodeo in reference to a residential burglary. Monday, October 25:

. Units were dis-patched to Westfield Mall around 8:30 p.m. regarding two male subjects attempting to pass fictitious $100 bills to make purchases. The men were located and counter-feit $100 bills were found on their persons. A 31-year-old Vietnamese and a 29-year-old Caucasian were arrested at the scene without incident.

A robbery occurred around 9:20 p.m. at Sub-way, 411 East Huntington. A male suspect acted as a lookout while another male suspect entered the business, displayed a handgun, and demanded cash. Fearing for her safety, the employee handed over money from the cash register and the sus-pects fled the scene. Both suspects were described to be Hispanics between 20-30 years of age.

Around 1:10 p.m., a grand theft was reported at Ren Lee Beauty Supply, 411 East Huntington. Employ-ees discovered that a part of an acupuncture kit was stolen, and a review of the surveillance video showed a known female patron com-mitting the theft on October 20 around 11:18 a.m. They contacted the 58-year-old Asian suspect, but she re-fused to cooperate.

Wednesday, October 27:

7. A residential bur-glary occurred between October 18 and October 27 in the 100 block of West Foothill. Unknown suspects

possibly used an unsecured doggie door to gain access into the vacant house that is up for lease. The suspects then stole a refrigerator and a stove for a reported loss of about $2,320.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., units were called to Westfield Mall regarding a theft that just occurred. Upon arrival, a 36-year-old male Asian was already detained in the parking lot by the victim and security person-nel. Investigation revealed that the suspect wanted a re-fund for a purchase made at the Powerband kiosk. The vendor/victim advised that all sales were final and only exchanges were allowed. The driver was arrest-ed at the scene and booked at City jail.

JC Penney loss preven-tion personnel advised that they had detained a woman for theft around 7:20 p.m. The suspect concealed sev-eral shirts in her purse and then left the store without making payment.
