Passenger ship projects and deliveries: adapting to a new normal
a RINA class point of view
- COVID-19 impact on current newbuild projects and schedules
- Future expectations and potential new trends for newbuild market
- Impact on current and future repair and refurbishment and drydock
- Supply chain challenges, considerations and opportunities
- What can we learn from the aviation industry
Passenger ship Technology - Passenger shipprojects and deliveries: adapting to a new normal
Passenger ship Technology - Passenger shipprojects and deliveries: adapting to a new normal
COVID-19 impact on current newbuild projects and schedules - All newbuildings has been delayed by 6-8 months or a year - The ones close to delivery delayed as well - Previous signed order confirmed but, on the other side, options are not confirmed so far - We do not expect huge modification on the design already consolidated for the current
newbuilding at lest the one where the construction has started
Passenger ship Technology - Passenger shipprojects and deliveries: adapting to a new normal
Future expectations and potential new trends for newbuild marketTill 2024-2025 we do not expect any new big contract.
Market trend: - increase of ship´s size for the same numbers of passengers - potential trend is to reduce the maximum amount of passengers- potential increase of demand for ships with reduced passenger´s
carrying capacity (max 2000-2500 pax)
Design trend: - increase of crew spaces (due to the possibile limitation on crew
movement ashore and extended length of contract) - more attention to materials for interiors and furnishing - increase of hospital facilities aboard/possibilities to isolate persons- HVAC design and arrangment (advanced filtering, no recirculating,
containment capability) - increase of onboard network for IT application
Passenger ship Technology - Passenger shipprojects and deliveries: adapting to a new normal
Impact on current and future repair and refurbishment and drydock The design trend listed above will be applied as well to repair and refurbishment of ships on a less extensive magnitude level.
Passenger ship Technology - Passenger shipprojects and deliveries: adapting to a new normal
Supply chain challenges, considerations and opportunities New standard for materials characteristic are to be implemented in the Marine industries and regulation.
What can we learn from the aviation industry
The two business sectors are really different and the common point are very few. I do not think that there could be a great knowledge transfer from aviation industries unless for very limited cases.

First of all – we have to find a ”new normal” – the Industry has to work together to achieve this - and many of us are running out of time!
Today there there are measures for more hygienic behavious, social distancing, masks, washing hands and surfaces but this is not enough to keep the Covid-19 away.
• For more long term measures, some technologies exist, some are under development, but there are stillinnovations needed.
• Health and Sanitation Technology AND operational measures combined will be the ”new normal” in theindustry
• Smart new technologies are on their way - is the economy good enough to invest?
• Innovative solutions for hygiene, materials, equipment, furniture and communications is on the way.
