It’s Not About the BroccoliMore and more the task of teaching children to eat right is falling to the child care providers. Not only does that mean that you have to fit an extra task into an already crowded

day, but you also have the added challenge of trying to coordinate your efforts with strategies parents are using at home. How many times have you seen children try new food with you, but refuse to eat them at home? Or had parents ask you what they can do to improve how their children eat?Dina Rose introduces an innovative approach to teaching eating habits that others have called “transformational.” You’ll learn why knowing about nutrition isn’t enough, how families inadvertently produce (and reproduce) bad eating habits in early childhood, and practical changes child care providers can make to teach children to eat right. It’s all based on the latest research and delivered in a way that is clear, interesting, and immediately practical.

Unfortunately, when put through the daily grind of early care and education, these elements can get pushed to the wayside. It’s time to relcaim your passion and get serious about play. B. Avoid Pizza-Pasta-Nugget-Hot Dog with Three Simple Habits - Most young children attend day care or preschool, where they consume up to 3/4 of their daily calories and nutrients. Sadly, 1 in 3 children is overweight or obese. Experts argree that prevention must start before children turn 5. But teaching kids to eat right is harder than providing healthy food. How do you get children to move beyond a “child-friendly’ diet? Building on the morning keynote, this workshop covers practical, research-based techniques that providers can use to create a fun and positive healthy eating environment that connects to common curriculum areas and activities already being used in child care. C. Building Blocks of Literacy: Creating a Literacy-Rich Environment - Reading outcomes relate to school and life opportunities. Learn components of early literacy and how to analyze your enviornment, create a literacy-rich enviornment using everyday materials, and enlist family support. Presented by Deb Colling. D. You’ve Got Personality Kid! Working with Temperament- Do you care for a child who feels big emotions very loudly, has difficulty sitting still, or is very persistent? Each child has a unique temperament and some will need specific coaching and guidance to succeed. During this workshop, you will identify a child’s unique temperament trait makeup, discover common triggers, and learn strategies to work with the most difficult traits. Presented by Raelene Ostberg. E. Sudden Unexpected Infant Death/Abusive Head Trauma (SUID/AHT) - This class meets DHS Licensing training requirements for both Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and Abusive Head Trauma (AHT). Content includes recommendations to reduce SUID including SIDS, suffocation and other sleep related infant deaths; safe sleep environments, MN Child Care regulations related to safe sleep; as well as symptoms and consequences of abusive head trauma, risk factors for abusive head trauma; strategies to use when stressed, angry or frustrated. Presented by Pamela Bohm Applies Toward: Sudden Unexpected Infant Death & Abusive Head Trauma, CDA: Safe, Healthy Learning Environment

F. Active Supervision: A Developmental Perspective - Meets the Family Child Care provider annual supervision training requirement. This training curriculum will address best practices of active supervision in a family child care setting; describe the way in which supervision is impacted by a child’s development; explain characteristics typically associated with differeing levels of development and their impact on supervision. Presented by Molly Hughes CC Content Area 7a: Establishing Healthy Practices, CDA: Safe, Healthy Learning Environment. Applied toward: Active Supervision.

WORKSHOPS SESSION I 10:30 -12:30 pm

G. A Potpurri of Creative Activities - This workshop provides activity ideas to implement right away. The topics include creative activities for: literacy/books, movement, creative art, cognitive, teamwork, and music ideas as well. Presented by Dawn Braa. H. Bridging Child Care and Home: Getting Parents OnBoard - Parents and early childhood educators don’t always agree on how to teach children healthy eating habits. Indeed, parents sometimes even seem resistant to efforts by providers. This session will change that. Building on the morning workshop, this session will show how shifting from nutrition-based approach to a habits-based approach, will enable providers to bring parents onboard. We will cover talking points for discussing healthy eating habits with parents, and techniques for building collaborative strategies and solutions so all children succeed. Presented by Dina Rose. I. Are You Mediawise? - Those who live or work with children have the power to change the media environment in which they grow up. Learn techniques to help support healthy media habits, how media habits can help or hurt a child’s behaviors and school success, help kids monitor their own media environments, and enlist parent support. J. Promoting Self Control Skills in Young Children - Gain insight into the development of the higher-level thinking skills needed for impulse control and self-regulation in young children. Explore strategies that foster these “Executive Functions” and help children develp the self-control needed to reduce negative behaviors and increase positive behaviors. Identify strategies that will build the child’s capacity to succeed both socially and academically in your care, in school, and in life. Presented by Raelene Ostberg. K. Music, Movement, and the Brain - Music and movement are powerful in creating a positive early learning environment.
