This week we return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. This Sunday and next Sunday, however, are designated as solemnities, special days that call our attention to the central mysteries of our faith. Today, on the first Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast invites us to consider what we believe about God, who has revealed himself to us in the Trinity, one God in three Persons. The Gospel for this Solemnity is taken from the Gospel of Matthew. In its conclusion, Matthew’s Gospel quickly moves from the disciples’ discovery of Jesus’ empty tomb and Jesus’ appearance to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to the commission that Jesus gives to his disciples in today’s Gospel. The final commission, as this part of Matthew’s Gospel is sometimes called, is given on the mountaintop. Throughout Scripture, many of the most important events happen on a mountaintop, and Matthew used this motif often. Peter, James, and John saw Jesus transfigured on the mountaintop, and Jesus taught the crowds from the mountaintop in the Sermon on the Mount. In today’s Gospel, the eleven disciples go to the mountaintop in Galilee, as Jesus had instructed them through Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. They see Jesus, and they worship and doubt at the same time. Jesus approaches them and commissions them to baptize and teach. It is a task for which Jesus had previously prepared his disciples; recall that Jesus had already sent the twelve apostles to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal. Yet earlier, the Twelve were sent only to the House of Israel; in this final commission, the eleven are told to go to all nations. The mission of Jesus is now to be taken to all people, and the task is to baptize and to teach. Jesus commissions his disciples to baptize in the name of the Trinity; this is one of the clearest attestations for Baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity found in Scripture. Other New Testament references to Baptism describe it as being celebrated in the name of Jesus. As we read this Gospel on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we are reminded that this central mystery of faith is meant to be lived. As baptized Christians, we share in the life of the blessed Trinity and seek to invite others to share in God’s love.

A Little Humor - They say Noah was a good businessman. After all, he kept the company afloat while the rest of the world was in liquidation.

Resident Priest - Father Matthew Guckin has been assigned to reside at St. Margaret Rectory. He serves full time in the Archdiocese as Director, Catholic Mission and Identity, Secondary and Collegiate Education. Father was ordained in 1999. He will take up his residence here in the middle of July. We are grateful to have Father as a resident here. The Holy Trinity - Our Catholic faith is that God is a Trinity of three divine persons in one God. In the Holy Trinity the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are separate and distinct persons who give of themselves so completely to one another in mutual love that they are united as one God. This belief about God reveals to us that our call as God’s people is to imitate the unity and love of the Trinity. We are separate, distinct and unique individuals, but we are not called to live in isolation, we are called to live in community, giving ourselves in love to one another. In love for us Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became man so that through him we can share in the divine life of the Trinity. Filled with this grace, we are empowered to develop our unique talents and share ourselves with one another in love so as to build loving communities in which we find our fulfillment as humans beings made in the image of God. This sharing of ourselves in the love and truth of God brings unity in diversity. May our faith in the Blessed Trinity inspire us to love as they love so that our unity with God and one another in our families, church and society may grow. Memorial Day - We offer special prayers this Memorial Day weekend for all those who have given their lives to serve and protect our country. May we be filled with gratitude for their courage and love in sacrificing their lives for others. May the Lord watch over and protect all who serve in our military as we pray for peace in our world. Adult Faith Formation - Please join us for Deacon John Lozano’s presentation on fervent and joyful discipleship on Wednesdays, May 30 and June 6 at 6:50 pm in the Antioch Annex. This is a great way to deepen our faith in the Lord and grow in joyful commitment to faith in him. Seminarian for the Summer - Jamey Moses, who is studying for the priesthood at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, will be living and working with us here at St. Margaret’s from June 2 to August 5. Jamey has completed two years of study at Saint Charles. He has four years of formation remaining. As part of their formation program, the Seminary assigns students to parishes and other pastoral settings in order to give them some experience in pastoral work in God’s service. We welcome Jamey and are looking forward to his presence here.

Catholic Teaching: The Holy Trinity - The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the hierarchy of the truths of faith. The whole history of salvation is identical with the history of the way and means by which the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin....The ultimate end of the whole divine economy is the entry of God’s creatures into the perfect unity of the Blessed Trinity. But even now we are called to be a dwelling of the Most Holy Trinity: “If a man loves me,” says the Lord, “he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him.”
