Volume MMXV Number 5 May 2015 A Lesson in Free Will I have a lived quite a bit of my adult life pondering the term free will. What does it really mean to operate in free will when one serves a God that is so big and I believe controls each and every part of my destiny as long as I’ll choose to listen? The question has not been answered yet, but many of you have asked how I came back to Epiphany and maybe it can be answered in a definition of the word free will. Webster describes it as this: “the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one’s own discretion.” Two and ½ years ago I took a job in Winston-Salem that wasn’t really in my gifting. It was rather administrative and required a lot of energy in managing an office space that dealt with money, calendars, pricing items, cleaning items, and dealing with people. The people part I didn’t mind although so much of my energy was spent on things I didn’t like, I started to resent the people part! About six months into this job I was heavy-hearted and began seeking God for a new opportunity even though I knew good and well it wasn’t going to happen. I had taken this job because it was in front of me and the way it was presented seemed like a good idea. However, sometimes things aren’t always as they seem. Truth be told, I wasn’t listening very closely to what God may or may not have been saying about this job. Shortly after I took that position, I had coffee with the friend who recommended it to me. I said in no uncertain terms that this was her fault and I wasn’t happy with her. So many things are wrong with that statement, but her reply was so right...“Ashley, you asked me about the job. I told you. You took this job on your own (free will) without asking me what I thought.” I had been called out! She was 100% correct. Not only did I not ask what her opinion may be about this, I didn’t spend a lot of time asking God. That, my friends, is free will! I decided on my own that I was going to accept that job and would do it to the best of my ability with no regard for what anyone said about it. God gives us free will and we exercise it daily--and I sure did! Fast forward 2 ½ years. I receive a message from someone asking me to consider a youth position at Epiphany. I said no, thank you. A month later I receive another message asking me to consider it again. I said, no, thank you (free will). Two weeks later I received yet another message and my reply was, ok, let’s talk. After coffee, good conversation and a gentle reminder of my heart for ministry, I was sure that one conversation with the pastor wouldn’t hurt. I was convinced Pastor Laura Health Update First, let me say thank you, thank you, thank you for all your support and care of me during these last weeks. The cards, the flowers, the wonderful food all of you have prepared for my family--such tangible expressions of your love and concern. And, one of the nice thing about being on pain meds is that I can re-read the cards and have an entirely new experience at each reading! The surgery went very well. I am still weak, in pain, and on a limited diet---so much for Lent being over. I will need to watch carefully what I eat over these next weeks as I adjust to having significantly less colon. I have felt the support of all the prayers and am thankful to be a part of this family of faith. I will continue to keep you updated on my recovery, and also want to say thanks again to all who have offered so much support to me and my family during this time. And...hopefully, some good sermon material will come from this time. God's peace! after a conversation with Pastor Laura that it was a good fit, but would WAIT patiently for any- thing else to happen that was going to happen. Clearly, waiting isn’t necessarily my forte but I did it! I waited, and in God’s timing, I was brought back to Epiphany into a most welcoming community of faith where I can use my gifts and talents and help others grow in what is important to them! So my lesson in free will and definition is simple- -doing what you want. HOWEVER, sometimes God’s will trumps my free will and is 100 times better than what I could’ve done my own self. This means, if we listen, He will reply. As is the case with me and I’m sure a number of you. Blessings all over you as you seek His will in your lives this day and days forthcoming!

A Lesson in Free Will

I have a lived quite a bit of my adult life pondering the term free will. What does it really mean to operate in free will when one serves a God that is so big and I believe controls each and every part of my destiny as long as I’ll choose to listen? The question has not been answered yet, but many of you have asked how I came back to Epiphany and maybe it can be answered in a definition of the word free will. “I am the Truth” Spoken Daily at EECC

EECC students KNOW this is true. EECC students hear this message each and every day in the classrooms of Epiphany

church. John 14:6 is May’s memory verse—“I am the truth, the Way and the Life.” Isn’t it wonderful to know that YOU are part of this mission of teaching God’s Truth to preschoolers?

Our preschoolers are learning all about animals this month. You can walk in several of the classrooms and see hand-drawn pictures of wild animals—camels, giraffes, elephants, and even a rhinoceros! You can probably guess what Bible story they hear!!

Our EECC yard sale on April 18th was a big success! Over $1,000 was “gathered” as the result of selling a huge variety of clothes, toys, and furniture. This money will be used as seed money for our playground upgrade project. THANKS to Epiphany members who donated items to sell and to those who helped “man” the tables!

You can help grow our playground fund by donating your grocery dollars by “linking” to EECC at your favorite grocery store (you can link to several schools on any one card) and donate your Thrivent dollars to EECC if you are a Thrivent member!

More News From the Council

Kathy Knecht will be unavailable from May 7th through May 16th. Any Council business during this time should be directed to Zach Baker.

During our meeting on April 20th, the Council spent time reviewing the church’s Ministry Site Profile (MSP) which is being prepared as part of the call process. All candidates who might be interested in talking with our Call Committee can review this document to better learn about Epiphany, and to understand our history, the community we live in and serve, our vision and mission. We want to thank Jim Pierson and Santiago Saldana from the Council and Sandy Hunter and Kathleen Tucker from the Call Committee for all their work in putting together the needed information. Please keep the Call Committee and Council in your prayers.

The Finance and Property Committee met together to look at some needs at Epiphany. The Property Committee has been asked to put together a list of projects and the associated costs which will be needed in the next 3 to 5 years. Please remember we have been here for over 50 years and we have expenditures involved in keeping up our aging facility, such has carpeting, lighting, windows &

Beginning May 3rd following the service, council members will be available in the adult library to speak with members who may have questions or concerns. During this time of transition much is happening and we want to continue moving forward. Please feel free to talk with the Council members about your questions and concerns.

Here is the schedule for May:

• May 3rd: Kathy Knecht, Jim Pierson, Gretchen Pfitizner

• May 10th: Dave Hinshaw, Santiago Saldana, Zach Baker

• May 17th: Jeanie Saphar, Charlene Wellborn, Carolyn Wiley

• May 24th: Melissa Maltzahn, Cory Phillips, Karl Florian

We hope to talk with you whether you have questions or comments or just stop and say hello.

doors, etc. After a list of needs have been completed by the Property Committee, a task force will be formed to plan, organize and carry out a campaign to secure congregation approval and financial support.

As you know, Pastor Laura will be out for several weeks recovering from her surgery and has prepared a very detailed plan during her absence. The following is a schedule for Sundays in May indicating who will lead worship:

• May 3rd & May 10th Pastor Phil Stringer

• May 17th & May 31st Dr. Katherine Shaner

• May 24th Pastor Michael Weaver

Any pastoral emergencies will be covered by the Salem Conference Pastors. Please call the church office during the day. After hours contact Kathy Knecht or Zach Baker. Please continue to pray for Pastor Laura and her family during her recovery.

The Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem will hold a volunteer orientation session on Wednesday, May 13 from 9:30 - 12:00 noon. Volunteers are specifically needed for the Faith In Action Care Program to offer assistance in medical and grocery transportation of older adults, minor home repairs as well as visitation and respite care. Over 1,600 older adults are served through the program and volunteers are the key to enabling them to remain independent in their own homes. For more information about volunteer opportunities and the orientation session, call Drea Parker, Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator

How much is enough?

The next book is PASTRIX by Nadia Boles Weber and will be reviewed by Margaret Brock and Melissa Maltzahn on May 14th at 7pm. This is a book by a young pastor who has inspired our youth and made us as adults aware that

different does not mean deficient. All are invited. Over the summer reads are THE PRODIGAL GOD by Keller and LIFE STRATEGIES by Dr. Phil. We will resume in September with the discussion following the June-August hiatus. Any questions, call or email Judy Mountjoy.

I would like to thank my Epiphany family for including my friend, Lynn Edwards, to your prayers in the past months. Lynn was one of my running buddies. In the fall of 2014, Lynn was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and after a hard fought battle, died on Sunday, April 12th. On April 18th, our running community ran and participated in the Hospice Hope Run in Lynn’s memory, and that was very healing for all of us. I know that the prayers of Epiphany, in addition to all the other countless prayers that surrounded her, helped sustain her in her fight against this horrible disease. Thank you so much for offering prayers for a person you didn’t even know…to me that is truly being the community of Christ! I wish each of you had had the opportunity to know Lynn and to know her beautiful smile that she always encouraged others with, while telling us, “You go, girl!” and “Love you!” To borrow from and paraphrase another friend, ‘Hers was a race that we felt ended much too soon, but we also know that she will be there to cheer us on throughout our race and as we, too, finally reach that finish line!’

FUN-Fundraising!

The EECC yard sale on Saturday 4-18-15 was a tremendous success, thanks to the hard work and generous contributions from church members, parents, PALS and the EECC staff. One congregation member reported she now has a “happy basement” and her gifts contributed significantly to our success! The lemonade stand/bake sale manned by precious children made over $120. The total raised for our project was $1,165 that will go toward the purchase of a much-needed shade structure addition for our playground that is shared by all of Epiphany’s youngest students.

This was our first joint effort for the church/school fundraising this year and we are so grateful for all the help, love and support that made this project a success.

In His Service, Lisa Nichols, Director
