Pastor’s Message
“Blessed is the king who
comes in the name of the
Lord! Peace in heaven,
and glory in the highest
heaven!”
Luke 19:38
“Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!”
Charles Wesley hymn
Palm Sunday at many churches begins with a
joyous procession of children and youth waving palm
branches and singing “Hosanna!” It is an exciting
event as even the people in the pews are encouraged
to wave their palms and join in the exuberance of the
day. A week later, on Easter Sunday, we are again in
a celebratory mood, excitedly proclaiming the
resurrection of Jesus Christ. But in-between there is
a valley of pain and suffering to be traversed. When
we jump from one mountain top to another, the
experience of Easter loses some its power. We can’t
fully comprehend what Easter means to us until we
have shared, at least vicariously, in the despair and
grief of Good Friday.
Too often, Holy Week is just a school
vacation or a time to buy Easter clothes. I invite you
to make it more meaningful this year by committing
to a discipline of discipleship. Make a commitment
to be in worship at one or more of the mid-week
services – Maundy Thursday communion, Good
Friday Noon or evening Tenebrae, and Saturday’s
Jazz Vigil. Bring greater meaning to your celebration
of Easter by experiencing the valley between the
mountaintop experiences of Palm Sunday and Easter.
Perhaps you will want to join me in an act of sacrifice
by fasting from midnight Thursday night until the
Easter vigil. If medical issues prevent you from

giving up food for those 40 hours, consider what
else you might sacrifice: TV, coffee, electronic
devices. It is through our identification with the
suffering of Christ and the grief of the disciples that
we better understand the extraordinary joy and
wonder of Easter morning. And time spent in prayer
always brings us closer to God. Maybe you will
want to set a schedule of regular prayer during these
three days.
I hope you will take advantage of the many
ways Grove offers to remember the enormous
sacrifice of Jesus for us, and to celebrate what God
has done through Jesus Christ. Happy Easter. United Methodist Men

Upcoming Events
Prayer Shawl Information
Mark your calendars! ALL volunteers and staff
members who work with our children and youth at
Grove are required to attend a one hour Safe
Sanctuary "Re-training" on Saturday morning, April
18th at 10:00 am in Asbury Hall. The session will be
conducted by John Lafferty, the Vice Chairman of the
EPA Conference Safe Sanctuary Committee, and will
cover the new PA law changes concerning
individuals who work with children and youth. Please
plan on attending this important meeting.
Safe Sanctuary Re-Training
Because of Holy Week, our Prayer Shawl Meeting will be changed to Wednesday, April 8 from 1:00 to 2:30
p.m. in Z Lounge.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry is a vital part of our church. Many shawls have been sent to people in the
community. They are a comfort to those who receive them. We have a small dedicated group of knitters and
are willing to help you learn to knit or crochet. Prayer shawl ministry needs your help. Even if you do not knit
or crochet, you could be a part of this ministry.
We could use your help in many ways. COULD YOU?
make the tags that go on the finished shawls and squares
write articles for the newsletters, website, or Facebook
organize the yarn closet
make copies of the directions for making prayer shawls, prayer squares, and baptismal shawls
set up the sign up area such as who needs shawls, with ways to request them, who wants to make them
or who would like to be part of the group
take yarn to people who would like to work at home, but might not be able to come to get it
pick up those shawls or that person who would like to attend a prayer shawl meeting
write a brochure that explains the ministry
deliver prayer shawls to those who need them
make an inventory of the shawls with pictures
set up a directory of where the shawls go
These are non-knitting needs that a co-chair could help with. This would free up time to help others learn. If
you could help in any of these ways, leave a note at the sign-up table.
Visitors to Grove are invited to a Pastor's Coffee on
Sunday, April 26, at 4 PM in Z Lounge. Come learn
about Grove, its mission, it's ministries and
opportunities for living out your faith at Grove
Church.

Many Ministries to Celebrate
We continue to have this column to notice and celebrate the many ways people within our congregation are in
ministry:
The team that initiated, researched and now implement the Community Dinners.....Carol Moore, Jill Baldwin,
Judy Wadsworth and Brenda Lewis.
Jim Barcio, who came over to Grove at 6AM on an icy Sunday morning in February to check whether we had
electricity and to help determine whether worship should be cancelled (that was the Sunday that the 8:00 AM
service was cancelled).
Shawn Bergman and Jon Baker, who hung banners on our building during the cold winter!
The youth ministry team, consisting of amazing, devoted and creative volunteers who pour their time and love
into our student ministry at Grove. When you see them, be sure to thank Becky Aaker, Mike Hardie, Jeff Pop-
yack, Jim Barcio, and Lori Plunkett for all they have done and continue to do to make Grove's youth know
they have a second home.
Syd Raihall, and her helper Teri Goslin, who faithfully coordinate the Grove Prayer Chain, and distribute
prayer requests to those on the prayer chain email list.
Linda Schneider and Cindy George, who coordinate the Stop Hunger Now event, and who organize fundrais-
ers year round to support this event.
Penny Arndt and Joan Cross, who take care of the Paraments in the Sanctuary. That is, they change the altar
cloths with the season, and polish the brass.
Linda Seybold and Carol Moore, who coordinate the Home Communion program. When we celebrate com-
munion at Grove during worship, Linda organizes the team who goes out to our home bound members to take
communion to them. Carol prepares the kits with the bread and grape juice in travel containers. Look for those
kits on the altar next time we have communion - they are blessed along with the bread and wine we use during
the service.
Sandy Murray and Joan Cross, who are our church Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer, handling all our reim-
bursement checks and paying the bills for Grove.
Brenda Lewis, who recruits and schedules our Greeters for all of our worship services.
Congratulations to Matt Popyack on making Regional Chorus!
Congratulations to Scott Byerly and Michael Shoremount and the students of Rustin for a great production of
“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”
Congratulations to Matthew Hontz who will participate in the Region Orchestra On March 14 as well as the
All State Wind Ensemble in Hershey on March 28 and All Eastern Band in Rhode Island on April 9-12.
Congratulations to Bron Yocum on receiving her Doctorate of Ministry degree from Drew University.

This month let’s look at the East Belfast Mission
where our Grove missionary, Alison Gilmore
ministers. This mission has worked in the area since
1985 through a local Methodist church. The
purpose of the mission is to bridge the divide
between Catholics and Protestants. Economic
development has been a central part of the
mission. The Skainos Center (a community
regeneration project, was opened in 2012.) This
center shelters a wide variety of programs and
services including worship, child care, elder care,
classrooms for art and a café. The counseling center
in which Alison ministers is one of the center’s
newest services. The center seeks to offer emotional
healing resulting from years of conflict in the
area. Alison says, ‘There is nothing joy-filled in
their circumstances. The picture I hold is beauty
and possibility. I don’t push it right away. In many
cases, it is very hard work and years of a journey
together, but as their counselor and as the church,
surely we should try to be known by our hope, love
and even joy in impossible situations. Please pray
for the work that Alison is doing and for more
volunteers counselors to lighten the load.

Sunday Morning Adult Forum
We have no class on Easter Sunday, April 5 but on the 12th we will begin our month with a re-scheduled topic
that had to be cancelled because of a February snow. Harriet Silver Lacy and Stuart Lacy will
photographically share their time in Qatar in 2012. You might remember that last year they shared their time
in Egypt, and then Stuart was re-assigned to Qatar when Egypt erupted. We're eagerly awaiting hearing about
Qatar, a country most of us know little about other than that it is home to Al Jazerra, a station familiar to many
that seek alternative TV news.
Later in April we will probably return to domestic issues, but plans are still tentative as of the newsletter
deadline. Anticipate one or more very provocative sessions on "the Prison Industrial Complex."
We meet from 11-12 Sunday mornings, upstairs in Z Lounge, with many of us gathering by 10:45 for coffee/
tea and casual conversation. Everyone is always welcome, regardless of whether you have been before or ever
intend to come back. And, as always, we welcome your questions and ideas. Be in touch with any of the class
coordinators: Carol Jewitt ([email protected]; 610/458-0207); Susan Parno ([email protected];
610/363-6897); and Arlene Rengert ([email protected]; 610/696-2282).
In early May the Grove AIDS Work Team
will be collecting these items for this summer's
campers at Camp Dreamcatcher, a camp experience
for local children (age 6 and up) that are affected by
HIV/AIDS. As you shop this April might you
purchase items to contribute? There are 130 campers
so there is need for lots!!! (And, checks toward
purchase are also welcome.) The collection is for
new items only: SINGLE BED SHEET SETS,
SOCKS, AND SUNSCREEN.
Questions? Please contact Arlene Rengert(610/696
-2282; [email protected]) or Pam Rollins (610)

On Monday, April 13, we will have a Men’s Night Out at the P. J. Whelihan's Pub in Downingtown, 853 Lan-
caster Ave. Spirits at 5:30 PM followed by dinner at 6:00 PM. You will order from an extensive menu and pay
by separate check. There is no program, just the opportunity for our men to socialize and get to know one an-
other and share our favorite stories. A sign-up sheet is posted on the men’s board in the church hallway. Please
direct any questions to Bill McKinney (610-420-1399).
Join us for worship during this most special week of the Christian year. We begin the week on Palm
Sunday, March 29th in morning worship. All three worship services will include distribution of palms. The
two traditional services will be preaching services, but at the 11:00 am Arise service, the sermon be replaced
by a series of dramatic vignettes featuring people Jesus met Along the Way to the Cross. Their reflections
remind us of the ways our sin puts us in need of a Savior.
The Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 pm commemorates the institution of the Lord’s Supper on Jesus’
last night before his crucifixion. After a homily exploring who were the original disciples gathered that night ,
we will take our place at the Lord’s Table.
On Friday, there are two opportunities for worship. The Noon hour will be observed by a traditional
service with preaching, hymns and prayers. At 7:30, we will gather for a Choral Tenebrae, a service retelling
the story of Christ’s passion through word and song and the extinguishing of the lights. Our Tenebrae holder
was made by Carl Bangert from wood of one of the oak trees in the original grove. As the candles are
extinguished, we are reminded of the ways the world tried to extinguish the light of Christ.
Saturday afternoon, the Jazz Vigil invites us to assemble in the cemetery west of the church at 4 pm
and process behind the band into the sanctuary where we will hear the story of salvation proclaimed, from
creation to the fall and our need for a savior, to our redemption in Jesus Christ. Dixieland jazz distinguishes
this service from the rest of the weekend.
Easter Sunday begins with the Sunrise service at 6:30 am as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus
Christ. We’ll continue worship at 8 am with a choir ensemble and 9:30 am with the full Tabernacle Choir
singing the Hallelujah Chorus! We’ll finish the morning with the Arise service taking place in the sanctuary at
11 am.
Come and walk the way of Christ, from the acclamation of Palm Sunday to the grief of Good Friday to
the unexpected joy of Easter Sunday

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) PRAYER: FAIR TRADE God, bless the campesinos, the small-scale coffee farmers who
spend all year working small, family-owned farms, with unpredictable harvests. Renew their
souls so that they might carry on through the next harvest as their coffee fuels me through the
next challenge in my life. Help me remember that when I choose to buy the things that I need
from fair-trade companies, I’m investing in social projects like fresh-water wells, educational
materials and organic agriculture projects. Remind me every day that I do mission work
simply by choosing the coffee that I drink. Amen

small-scale farmer co-ops. Learn more at Equalexchage.coop.
Circle of Giving In April, we suggest that you consider donating rice, stuffing, beans (dried and canned). You may place
your contributions in the beautiful wooden box inside the church entrance on Sunday or anytime that you
happen to be at the church. All contributions are delivered to the West Chester Food Cupboard each week
where they help to meet the increasing need. During March 153 pounds of foods were delivered to the
Cupboard. Many thanks to all persons who are faithful providers! You are invited to stop by the Cupboard any
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday morning to see the Cupboard in action. You will be impressed!
Paper for People On Easter Sunday, April 5, we will be accepting your donations of a variety of paper products. Suggested
donations include paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, diapers, napkins, paper cups and plates, etc. Collection
tubs are to be found inside the church entrance on that Sunday. Your contributions will be delivered to the
Friends Association in West Chester, an organization that provides transitional housing for families who are
new to the area. Your donations of paper products are distributed among these families. Additionally, Grove
provides food to each family on "move-in day."
The Environment
Earthjustice is a nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the magnificant places, natural
resouces and wildlife of this earth, and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment. The
following is a recent action by Earthjustice. A million acres of Grand Canyon watershed is less thretened by
uranium poisoning, thanks to a court ordeer upholding a 20-year ban on new uranium mining claims. In 2012,
then Interior Seretary Ken Salazar issued the ban, protecting the area’s springs and creeks, wildlife and vistas
from new toxic uranium-mining polution. The ruling also helped protect Havasu Creek, the sole drinking
water supply of the Havasupai Tribe, whose life and culture are inextricably intertwined with the Grand
Canyon. The judge summarized his ruling dismissing all uranium mining industry claims by stating that the
Secretary of the Interior had the authority to „err on the side of caution in protecting a national teasure.“
Through Church and Society we at Grove support the work of Earthjustice and take the position that the work
of this organization is instrumental in preserving God’s creation. We are most interested in supporting work on
behalf of the environment in our immediate area. Our Adopt-A-Highway event is such an activity. We invite
you to particpate in this event and to suggest other activities that will benefit the environment.

Living for Jesus, Changing Lives
In an effort to provide the Grove congregation with examples of "life-changing experiences." Soon, Church
and Society will be soliciting stories from the congregation that are often overlooked, but that have brought joy
to those affected. Much more concerning this will be forthcoming. Meanwhile, be thinking of experiences that
you or others have had that have brought about profound changes in one’s life.
Adopt-A-Highway Again this year Grove volunteers will be gleaning all the trash found along Grove and Whitford Roads
(starting at Sunset Hollow Road. ending at Rt. 30). Our first pick-up is scheduled for Sunday, April 19. We
will meet at the church at 1:00 PM to receive materials (vests, gloves and bags) and assignments. We try to
work in teams of two, leaving our filled trash bags at appropriate spots along the way for pick-up by
PennDOT. A team can accomplish its work in about an hour and a half. Of course, the more volunteers we
have the shorter the entire job. This is not a closed group of volunteers, we need all the help we can get. There
is no sign-up for this event, just show-up at the appointed time. Know that you will improving the environment
in the neighborhood of our church. Questions? Call Bill (610-696-3699).
April 22 is Earth Day, a day we’re invited to
remember our responsibility to future generations to
care for the earth and serve as stewards of creation.
On the three Sundays following Easter, we’ll explore
God’s call to stewardship of the earth in sermons and
in discussion classes. We’ll use a curriculum created
by the Dr. Rev. Owen Owens, a participant in the life
of Grove Church and former denominational officer
of the American Baptist Convention with
responsibilities including the faith response in eco-
justice. Sign up for this special Sunday School class,
offered at 9:30 and 11 am, and join us Sunday
mornings as we consider God’s call to Adam to “fill
the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over…
every living thing.”

Finance
Regular Operations – Our financial results year to date through February are as follows:
2015 2014
ACTUAL RECEIPTS $ 85,676 $100,219
ACTUAL EXPENSES $116,497 $ 97,671
OPERATING SURPLUS / (DEFICIT) $ (30,821) $ 2,548
Expenses increased over prior year due to the timing of certain bills that have been incurred sooner than last
year or higher: an annual HVAC service contract of $4,000, snow removal of $1,100 higher than last year
(while no one substantial snow – we’ve had many small snow/ice events this year), and an unplanned elevator
repair of $2,565. Giving is behind last year’s total to date, despite attendance being steady on normal-weather
Sundays….of course normal weather in January/February has been difficult to find. While only one early
worship service was cancelled due to potentially hazardous road conditions, several Sundays’ attendance
numbers were unfavorably impacted by the winter weather. If you were away or unable to attend, please
consider catching up on your pledge if you are behind. Your faithful support is vital to meeting the on-going
needs of the many ministries which are underway at Grove.
Check request form authorizations – Several individuals leading various Grove programs or committees have
asked for guidance as to what signatures are needed on the check request form for authorizing the issuance of
check payment. In general:
Payments up to $250 – Committee chairperson may approve (except if payable directly to themselves – then
requires the same as next instance);
Payments $251 - $1,000 – Committee chairperson or one of the committee members; and one of the following:
either of the Pastors, Chair of Steering Team or Finance; and
Payments over $1,000 – Committee chairperson and two of the following: either of the Pastors, Chair of
Steering Team or Finance.
In addition, authorization signatures can be applied electronically by email (for example, recently I received by
email a check request and supporting invoice in an adobe “pdf” format…printed and then re-scanned and
emailed back to requestor once I reviewed and signed).
Finally, recently a new Fundraising Policy and Fundraising Form was adopted effective for all fundraising
activities at Grove after April 1. The purpose is to provide guidelines and procedures for those involved in
fundraising. Ask the office for a copy by email or visit the new Grove Church web site (once launched).
Thank you for your faithful support,
Bob Rubin for the Finance Committee
