PASTOR’S CORNER

Damnation that works

A cartoon by Edward Koren in The New Yorker offers a different take on hell:

In the cartoon, Satan and his smirking assistants are welcoming a group of condemned souls to the dark, burning landscape of his domain. The Prince of Darkness explains to the sad collection of new arrivals: “You’ll find there’s no right or wrong here. Just what works for you.”

It is exactly that attitude that makes our lives “hell” in the first place: that everything is about us, that our needs and wants trump the needs of everyone else, that right and wrong are all relative to our moods and feelings and desires. Can you imagine such a “hell” this would be if everyone acted only in his or her own interest? True love would be impossible, healing forgiveness would be a non-starter, and there would be no way out of spiraling poverty and brokenness. On this First Sunday of Lent, the Spirit of God sends us into the desert of our own hearts to confront the attitudes and values that really do “work” for us: the grace of God that enables us to let go of our self-centeredness that makes our lives “hell” for ourselves and those we love.

Safety Corner: Code GreenTornado season is coming up. Remember if a Code Green is called during mass, it’s a serious weather event. When the Code Green is announced the Safety Team will direct movement to designated safe areas located throughout the campus. Safe areas are recognized by “Green Dot” signs located on walls. Persons with children in the nursery should immediately go to the classroom and bring their child to the nursery hallway. Proper tornado position is to sit or crouch & cover your head until “All Clear” is given.

Please be aware that there have been four Catholic churches, including POP, involved in theft. Purses have been stolen from back pews. This is a rare thing but theft can occur anywhere. Make sure you lock your car doors and keep track of purses, cell phones, etc. while at Mass.

Pick up your Matthew Bag!Sunday, March 5

After the 5:00 pm MassA few weeks ago, the High School Youth Group made over 100 “Matthew Bags” that are now ready for pickup. The name “Matthew Bags” comes from Matthew 25:31-40. “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” These “Matthew Bags” are ziploc bags filled with shelf-stable items, personal hygiene items, socks and a note of encouragement. The idea is that when you see someone in need, give them a bag.

Some teens have already distributed the bags over the past weekend, in turn, benefiting more from the reaction of the individuals receiving the bags. It was a very touching moment.

Bags will be available in the Gathering Space after the 5:00 pm Mass on Sunday, March 5. Please take some for your car.

The Power of HabitsHabits have a massive impact on our lives. For better or for worse, they can shape our destiny.

Resistance loves the negative patterns in your life, the bad habits. The path of least resistance creates negative routines, rituals and rhythms. Do you know what the negative patterns are in your life? Do you procrastinate by watching television? Do you try to spend your way to happiness? Do you eat when you are not hungry to deal with emotions? Do you drink to escape? Do you constantly check your e-mail or social media to avoid doing the most important things? Do you keep spending time with people even though you know they are not helping you become the-best-version-of-yourself?

We also have negative habits of the mind. Do you worry about things that you have no control over? Do you obsess about the worst possible outcome in situations? Are you constantly judging yourself and others? Do you keep returning to feelings of guilt even after God has forgiven you? Do you dwell on things in the past you wish you had done differently? Do you blame yourself even when something is not your fault? Do you doubt yourself constantly? (Resisting Happiness, Matthew Kelly)

As we begin this Lenten journey together, what questions can we begin to let go? We all have these questions and habits that crowd our thinking and daily routines each day - how can we begin to feel a sense of peace and let go of things and feelings that are out of our control? Let’s try together to give up just one bad habit.

On Friday, March 17, the local St. Kateri Circle will lead Stations of the Cross in the church at 12:00 pm. This special ceremony will include Native American’s in authentic dress and a sacred smudging ceremony. All are welcome!

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, given the name Tekakwitha, baptized as Catherine and informally known as Lily of the Mohawks (1656 – April 17, 1680), is a Roman Catholic saint who was an Algonquin–Mohawk laywoman. Born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, on the south side of the Mohawk River, she contracted smallpox in an epidemic; her family died and her face was scarred. She converted to Roman Catholicism at age 19, when she was renamed Kateri, baptized in honor of Saint Catherine of Siena. Refusing to marry, she left her village and moved for the remaining 5 years of her life to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, south of Montreal in New France, now Canada.

Tekakwitha took a devout vow of perpetual virginity. Upon her death at the age of 24, witnesses said that minutes later her scars vanished and her face appeared radiant and beautiful. Known for her virtue of chastity and mortification of the flesh, as well as being shunned by some of her tribe for her religious conversion to Catholicism, she is the fourth Native American to be venerated in the Roman Catholic Church and the first to be canonized.

Under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, she was beatified in 1980 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Basilica on October 21, 2012. Various miracles and supernatural events are attributed to her intercession.

Lenten Day of Service Habitat Build to Honor Pope Francis We have a wonderful opportunity to serve our community during Lent and to honor Pope Francis. The Birmingham area Catholic schools and churches are sponsoring the construction of a third new home for a deserving family through Habitat for Humanity. Prince of Peace has made a financial donation to the project. Habitat’s goal is to eliminate poverty by providing affordable housing to families in need. This is being accomplished worldwide. The Birmingham area Habitat has a great history and is the 4th most active in the country among the 1,500 affiliates. Saturday, March 11 and Friday, March 31 have been designated as Prince of Peace work days. We are looking for volunteers. No experience is necessary. Anyone over the age of 14 can participate. POP contact is Bruce Grasso, [email protected] or 205.531.2892. You can sign up online here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f084aaeaa28a2f49-poplenten. Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-4)“I’m Pro-Life, and Pro-Refugee,”Scott Arbeiter, New York Times, February 7, 2017

But in recent years, I have come to realize that being pro-life requires more of me...I need to be ready to stand against every form of economic injustice, racism and individual or corporate greed that destroys the life of a family and a community...

My maturing pro-life views have also cause me to examine how I grapple with the question of war, nuclear proliferation and other causes I never used to consider pro-life.

JUNA Congratulations to POP School's JUNA team (Junior United Nations Assembly) which won an “Outstanding Resolution” award at the model United Nations Assembly held recently at Birmingham Southern College! The POP delegation scored 24 out of 25 possible points. Students Connie Craig, David Deason, Samad Muhammad and Carys Gonzalez represented Greece and presented a resolution requesting assistance from the UN to encourage the European Union to honor their commitment to assist Greece in the refugee crisis and to send a modest amount of money to assist with the immediate humanitarian needs of the refugees. JUNA is offered as a middle school elective with teacher Sammie Cockrell. The students wore traditional Greek clothing created by Victoria Gonzalez.

Mercedes Marathon A record number of POP School students (69) in grades K through 5 entered the Mercedes-Benz Kids Marathon! The students began training for the run back in September by running between one-half and one mile during their regular phys ed class. By marathon time, they had logged 25.2 miles and by finishing the 26th mile during the one-mile children’s event, they completed a marathon. Congratulations students and phys ed teacher, Amy Browne, on a job well done!

For the past year, The Weekender Backpack Program has accepted the challenge to provide food on weekends for children with the generous support of our parish. We now serve 140 students from K - 8th grades at Simmons, Our Lady of Fatima and Holy Family Middle School (two Diocesan schools). The program also includes hygiene products such as toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and soap. The Weekenders Program has made a difference in these students’ lives, and has truly become “Blessings in Backpacks.”

The Minus One Ministry sponsors this project and could use your help! Please consider spending a few hours each month organizing the food in the morning, packing the food in the evenings, and/or financially supporting these food-deprived students. Any donation is appreciated at any time. Please include “Weekender Backpack Program” on the memo line of your check. This could be your family’s Lenten sacrifice - to feed the hungry children in our community.

Vamos a intentar juntos abandonar UN mal hábito.
