and be directed to the social services that are

desperately need by so many.

You should know that Good Shepherd is the

lead church in this effort. Through our

mission giving we have already contributed

$4000 to make this happen and our own Amy

Smith is event manager.

In the days ahead you will be hearing a great

deal more about the Arden-Arcade Day of

Hope but I wanted you to know that “back

story.”

We are seeking God and trying to obey the

leading of the Holy Spirit.

Will we ever do Trunk or Treat again or Music

in the Park? Absolutely yes, as long as it is

what Jesus has planned. After all, Jesus is

Lord and it is all about what he wants to do

through us.

From The Council //

Greetings from your Church Council! Two major congregational events are just around the corner and both need the full participation of as many of our members as

possible.

Day of Hope – Saturday, November 7th -Encina High School

Day of Hope is Good Shepherd’s major community outreach effort for this year. Through our collaboration with other area churches we will be providing things like free groceries, health screenings, haircuts, games and activities for children and much more. Strong participation by as many of our members as possible is crucial to the success of this event. There are several middle schools that feed into Encina. The drop out rate at Encina is over 50%. A high percentage of students are homeless, meaning they do not have a permanent home address. Day of Hope is one day when we pull our resources along with other brothers and sisters in Christ to make a significant, positive impact in the lives of our neighbors. Further details and instructions for volunteering will soon be made available. Please prayerfully consider how you will participate in Day of

Hope.

Annual Meeting – Sunday, November 15th

We generally have one congregational business meeting each year – and that is our Annual Meeting in November. Key items will include approving a new slate of church leaders in various positions. We also approve Trust Fund grants for the coming year which will fund outreach and new stewardship opportunities. This year the congregation will also be approving some minor revisions to the Good Shepherd By-Laws. The Annual Meeting Agenda always includes some

standing business items.

The Budget, Trust Fund Grants & Revised By-Laws will be made available for the congregation to review a couple of weeks prior to the Annual Meeting. In addition, there will be two meeting opportunities during the Adult Education Hour on November 1st and November 8th to discuss these items in more detail and answer any questions that you, as a member may have. Our intent is to inform

and prepare you for the Congregational Meeting on November 15th.

It is really important that as many members as possible attend at least one of these information hours and the Annual Congregational Meeting and have the opportunity to vote and participate in moving the business of our church

forward.

Sunday Services at 7:45 am (Come As You Are), 8:30 am (Classic), and 11:00 am (Contemporary). Fellowship at 9:30 am. Educational Hour from 9:50 am 10:45 am: Adults (Fireside Room), IKON YOUTH (Youth Room), Kids (GS Kids Room). Library open on Sundays.

Friends of the Preschool October is such a wonderful month. We are going to the Pumpkin Patch!

Our school visits Fogwillow Pumpkin Farm in Wilton each year. It is such a great

place to learn about pumpkins and get into the harvest time spirit.

During September, we have learned about how special God has made us. There is no

one like us; each of us has very special qualities that God has given us.

We had our very first Chapel time for the new school year with Pastor Todd. We learned about the role of a Pastor. This is a very special time for our children in God’s

house.

The preschool children want to extend a very special thank you to Mrs. Julie Johnson for making awesome playdough. It is so wonderful and we are having a great time

making all kinds of creations.

Your preschool will have an OPEN HOUSE on Thursday, October 15, 2015 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Come and see what a wonderful place to learn your church

preschool offers.

Please spread the word – Your preschool has openings!

Thank you for your continued support to your church preschool!

iMPACT News

Holy Baptism for 3 Girls of Grace Three of iMPACT’s Girls of Grace were baptized on September 27th! What a blessing to witness and to be a part of. Praise God! Here’s a little more about their journey here at Good Shepherd:

Ashjanay stepped on our campus for the first time 11- months ago at Trunk-or-Treat. She met Ms. Kim at the Glow Station, got an invite to Girls of Grace—and the rest is history. The next day Ashjanay was back on campus and enrolled in our program. She attends Girls of Grace faithfully on both Thursdays and Sundays (yes, she’s in church every Sunday), read the Gospel at our iMPACT Sunday,

joined us on our trip to Bodega Bay, and loves to help wherever she can.

Ariah joined our program two years ago (along with her brother) a very shy little girl. She also attends Girls of Grace twice a week (in church every Sunday). Ariah was one of eight neighborhood girls blessed with a sponsored trip to Mt. Cross 2-years ago. Ariah and her brother also went through Holy Communion this past spring. Ariah has come out of her shell and found her faith here at Good Shepherd

(no longer shy or timid).

Kealani’s entry point to Good Shepherd was through our outreach camps. She also has three older brothers who’ve all participated in iMPACT and led the way (two of her brothers still participate in camps/Sons of Thunder). She joined us in kindergarten as a camp participant and just recently entered the Girls of Grace program (9-months ago; as a 3rd grader). Kealani also attends Girls of Grace twice a week and joined us on our special trip to Bodega Bay. Kealani recently invited a friend to Girls of Grace (Thursday session)—and now that new friend and brother

are attending on Sundays.

So, what can we glean from these newly baptized neighborhood young ladies?

Key points:

All three girls entered the church through an iMPACT camp, program, or

outreach event (and all serve a purpose and are critically important);

All three girls were committed to attending Girls of Grace on both Thursdays and Sundays (Sunday session is newer and very important as the girls get

to experience fellowship and attend worship with staff);

The special trips and extra opportunities made available to these girls have helped solidify their relationships with staff-- and

ultimately their faith.

Note: All three girls are being raised by a grandmother/grandparents.

Thank you Good Shepherd for helping to Transform Lives!

Pray For Our Men and Women in the Military //

Book Review // JOSEPHUS BY Paul L. Maier

Paul Maier has incorporated two other books by Josephus titled “Jewish Antiquities” and “The Jewish War” in this volume. Flavius Josephus was a Jewish historian and his works are one of the most authoritative ancient source for illuminating the peo-ple, places, and events recorded in the Old and New Testaments. He was born four years after Jesus crucifixion and was eye witness to much of what he reported. He reports on the Jewish events in Jerusalem up to the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. He has provided the name of Herodius’s daughter Salome whose dancing led to the beheading of John the Baptist. She is not named in the Gospels. He also furnished details about John the Baptist as well as James, the half brother of Jesus. He pro-vided a court history of four generations of Herods and details on Roman governors and conquerors and their relations with Jerusalem. He provides lots of details not found elsewhere. There are maps and full color photographs, drawings and charts. You will read about the many battles the Jews in Jerusalem had with invaders and internal turmoil that came up from time to time. Paul Maier is Professor of Ancient History at West-ern Michigan University and author of numerous books dealing with the rise of Christianity and the Roman Empire. Submitted by Ken Zacher
