In New Zealand, wealthy French businessman Charles Doumeng sees his world fall apart when he finds out he has an incurable disease. Maurice Tourneur was whimsically versatile, experimenting with a wide range of genres : from melodrama to comedy, from the Grand-guignol, to adventure and detective films.

After having emigrated to the United States, the French filmmaker Maurice Tourneur was one of the most remarkable directors of American cinema dur-ing the period spanning 1915 to 1925. Upon his return to France in 1930, he directed for Pathé Natan a dozen films, most of which he worked on alongside son Jacques Tourneur.
