What we do

No other city is as recognised by its transport system as London. Its red buses, black cabs and Tube Trains are known the world over. We are responsible for looking after the planning and the every day operation of the Capital’s transport system. We are world leaders with the Oyster card, contactless payments and our use of open data – enabling transport for more than 30 million journeys every single day. Improving and expanding transport in London is central to driving economic growth, jobs and housing across the country. The new Elizabeth line, for instance, is a huge opportunity to build and cement our reputation for delivering world-class transport that can truly transform lives and communities.

“To turn our ambitious plans into reality, we need the best

talent.”

We keep the city moving...

Employers are expecting major changes and one in eight organisations stated that the levy would

make graduate roles be repackaged as degree apprenticeships. Other organisations are scaling down their graduate programmes significantly to focus on the launch of their apprenticeship programme. The impact of the apprenticeship levy will be wide ranging to businesses in 2017/18.

Today the S T E M worker s hortfall is es timated to be approximately 69,000 thous and per year. Without dras tic change, UK key growth indus tries ris k s talling and the UK has the potential to fall even further behind other E uropean countries . At GCSE, there is approximately equal numbers of girls and boys taking STEM subjects because it is compulsory for all students to take maths and at least one science. Girls outperform boys across most GCSE subjects – more so in STEM than other subjects. 71.3% of girls who take STEM subjects achieve A*- C grades, compared to 62.4% of boys.

Emma Codd (Deloitte) explains the importance of targeting women for STEM related roles: “Not only is the pay gap in starting salaries smaller, if more women study STEM subjects and pursue related careers they will increase their earnings potential.”

£

However, this pipeline diminishes and girls are opting out of STEM occupations. Only 7% of girls go onto qualify in a core STEM area by level 4.

Information for teachers and careers advisors

E very day 30 million journeys are made acros s our network. B y 2031, it is expected L ondon will have grown by the s ize of B irmingham and G las gow combined.

It is our responsibility to create the capacity to handle this increase in journeys and keep London moving, working and growing. Each and every person who works for us plays a key role in this vitally important task. From engineers to project managers, to finance, technology and more, we offer a range of career options for young people looking to start their career with an organisation that invests in its people.

“” There are so many opportunities on apprenticeship schemes. During my sixth form not one word was uttered about apprenticeships, which is a real shame...The main drive was on UCAS applications for university, but this excludes young people like me who wanted a more vocational role... TfL provided strong advice to my parents to dispel the myth of apprenticeships being a second class choice to university... TfL Apprentice 2016, General Management.

“” I’d tell young people... that there are other jobs in the organisation other than a train driver. Whenever I tell people I work for TfL they automatically assume that I am a train driver! If it’s not a driver, it’s something to do with the parts of a train. I would tell them that there are a wide variety of jobs and that the drivers are probably a small percentage of the amount of jobs obtained in TfL.

“Since joining I have progressed immensely. Track, railway and

engineering knowledge which was zero is now of a good standard. Skills I have picked up or improved on would be my adaptability from moving from team to team, speed of learning from learning a lot of new knowledge and general communication skills from constantly working with others in different environments.

Meet Oliver

I work night shifts and look after the central line. We walk the tunnels at night and it’s pretty cool. My role is very physical as we make sure that the track is safe and reliable for our customers.

“ In my current placement I am working on a project called “Station Real Time Information App and Dashboard”, this is extremely exciting as it is pushing the boundaries in terms of technology. The project aims to have station staff deliver real time information about their station via an app to the London Underground Control Centre and ultimately our customers.

I enjoy the fact that I am contributing towards changing the way in which transport within London works - it’s also nice to see a finished product at the end of a project. I think apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity for people, especially those who are driven to succeed.
