Personal Profile I am a student of Mathematics & Philosophy at the University of Birmingham studying at a 2:1 standard. I take a keen interest in my studies, particularly in the areas of computability, logic, the foundations of mathematics, language, and other related analytical fields. It is my aptitude in logical thinking and critical thought that has drawn me to these subjects. I am an active member of the vibrant student community here in Birmingham, taking part in a broad range of group activities and having sat on student committees since the beginning of my University career. I enjoy working in teambased employment roles, and have worked in a number of hospitality jobs including bartending, waiting/banqueting and portering. As a result I have found that I am a person who is driven by teambased environments to achieve goals and reach shared targets.

Skills Studying Mathematics & Philosophy has given me a diverse set of skills associated with problemsolving and essay writing. As well as demonstrating competency in numeracy and solving formal problems, I have proven that I can write effective formal documents in an academic context by achieving high 1st and 2:1 grades in my written essays. In Philosophy I have chosen to study modules centred on logic and analytic philosophy. Through this I have learnt how to write in a concise, clear manner, whilst giving consistent logical arguments that follow a precise structure. In Mathematics this year I am studying topics in Computability and Pure Mathematics. Learning about the theory behind computation is giving me insight the core functionality of computers, and has enabled me to apply my analytical skills in an inspiring new way. Pure Mathematics is aiding me to further develop analytical skills and is challenging me creatively to think of proofs in answer to complex questions. Between June and August of this year I was employed as a research intern at the University of Birmingham to assess the legacy of the governmentfunded National HE STEM Programme. This required me to use Excel to analyse data taken from surveys and from HESA and present my findings in the summary report. In my academic studies I have become effective at using online resources to research topics for my essays and maths projects, as well as in using word processing software and LaTeX for writing them up. During my internship I was also required to conduct telephone interviews with professional academics, helping me to develop an effective telephone manner and other communication skills which supplement my customer services skillset.

Activities and Interests President of the Jazz and Blues Society; Lead guitarist of Birminghambased indie band Ideal Club; Member and previous Treasurer of the Debating society; Member of the Ballroom and Latin Dance Society As President of the Jazz and Blues Society it is my role to direct a committee of eight persons and lead weekly sessions that include performances in the Selly Oak area and workshops in the Guild of Students. Exceptional organisational and teamwork skills are required to carry out the various logistical tasks, such as transport and procurement of equipment, booking of venues, advertising of events, etc. in addition to arranging socials and hired performances for other societies. I am personally very proud of the society, which this year has vastly grown in its membership and level of activity, and I believe this has been possible due to supportive and hardworking group of people I have worked with. I have performed as a musician for many years now, and have been involved in a range of groups from a professional jazz big band based in Bath to my current status as a lead guitarist in the indieblues band Ideal Club. Working as part of a group to arrange stellar performances and record original musical material has been an integral part of these activities. I have found that performing under the spotlight has given me a confidence that enables me to work under pressure and which is transferable to any situation involving presentation to an audience. My involvement in the debating society and my previous job teaching debating skills to secondary school children have served to further develop skills in preparation and public speaking. As treasurer of the debating society I liaised with the law firm Allen & Overy from whom a secured a large sponsorship package, which I believe is demonstrative of my presentation skills in a professional context.
