Pembertonians Recall Revolution

Thirty neighbors gathered at noon on July 4th to commemorate America’s founding fathers with a public reading of The Declaration of Independence.

Fortified by bottled water, Coke Zero and Miller Lite, six people from throughout Pemberton took turns reading portions of the revolutionary document while additional neighbors looked on. Billy Wroe, Betty Trent, Mike Klatt, Terrill Fischer, Cate Walsh and Loretta Fischer served as readers. After each section reading, Tina Weinberger chimed in with a “ringing of the bell” for liberty. Following the reading, everyone enjoyed ice cream and socialized while patriotic march music played. (Refreshments were underwritten by the Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Association).

Pemberton Pets of the Month

Thumper and ThorNominated by Giselle Waugh

1426 Preston

Journal:  Congratulations on being voted Pemberton Pets of the Month! Tell me about yourselves.

Thor:  We come from a large family--64 siblings as of last Wednesday.

Thumper:  65!  You always leave out Jumper.Thor:  He’s a Jack-a-lope, you idiot.Thumper:  You treat him like he doesn›t exist!Thor:  Your brain doesn›t exist.

Journal:  When did you join the Waugh family?Thor:    It was back when they had that Bugs Bunny

marathon on Nickelodeon and parents were adopting right and left.

Thumper:  I hated “Bring Your Pet to School” day at Casis.Journal:  Why?Thor:  Ever had a 5 year old tie your ears in a knot? Ever

been dropped? Ever been squeezed until you looked like an (Continued on Page 3)

ad for Blue Bunny ice cream?  Thumper:  One of those kids gave me pink eye.Thor: We all have pink eye, nitwit.Thumper:  Unbelievably contagious. One visit to a

kindergarten and it spread like wildfire. Thor:  Let me do the talking, O.K.?Journal:  Not the brightest bunny in the hutch, is he?Thor:  You think?

Journal: You live in one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Austin.

Thor: Yes, and there are certainly advantages:  Organic vegetables, perfumed hare conditioner . . . but it’s not all a bed of lettuce.

Journal: What do you mean?Thor:  There are more people here in Pemberton who own

rabbit coats than in any other place in the state—and that includes Preston Hollow in Dallas.

Journal: No!Thor: It’s true. Not only that, there’s a family a few blocks

away that owns a python. All day long it’s wrap and eat, wrap and eat. And last month, three foxes wandered up from Shoal Creek. What kind of environment is that in which to raise a bunny? And the culture is changing: used to be, you wanted to be a man, you had a Bar Mitzvah and got a fountain pen. Nowadays, a kid turns 13, he gets a gun and his dad takes him on a rabbit hunt. Very sad.

Thumper:  The python invited me on a play date. Thor:  Go.Thumper:  I’ll invite him to this year’s long-jump

competition. I won last year!Thor:  You were disqualified.Thumper:  Just for carrying a good luck charm. Thor: It was a rabbit’s foot!Thumper: It worked: I won!Thor:  Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!

Journal:  That’s all we have time for today—thank you, and again, congratulations!

Triangle UpdateTriangle Planning to be discussed

at the Neighborhood Lunch Meeting August 30

The monthly lunches are an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with your neighbors on a casual basis and talk about issues of interest to Pemberton Heights.

This month we will discuss the planning underway for several of the TRIANGLES. The city is installing water to the triangles at Wooldridge / Gaston and Leigh/Jarrett. Once complete, landscaping of these triangles can begin in the fall of 2014. Fundraising for the landscaping for these triangles has been underway and funds have been waiting for the water work to be complete. The association is also starting to plan a play scape at the Hartford Triangle.

If you are interested in participating, planning, volunteering or donating, please come and discuss your interest with Board president Craig Duewall, who will chair the planning committees.

WHERE AND WHEN: The August lunch will be Friday the 30th Time: 11:45. Place: Russell’s at Kerbey LaneCost: Each attendee pays for their own lunch by

separate check.Contact: Betty Trent at [email protected] to

rsvp. You are welcome to come without rsvp, just ask the hostess for the PHNA table.

Street Water Work UpdateLast month, city staff made a presentation about the upcoming

street utility work at the neighborhood board meeting. The work will begin this month and last a year. The work will replace aging pipes and no pressure changes are expected to result.

Work will involve both water and wastewater work. Work will not occur on all streets. If a street will receive both water and wastewater work, these will probably not occur concurrently or consecutively, but with some length of time between the two scopes of work. This is due to both code and scheduling limitations.

The city has set up this website:http://www.austintexas.gov/department/renewing-austinThe website has a link to the Pemberton street work and the city

has posted the schedule and a map showing the affected streets. If your street is not shown, there should be no work anticipated. Streets receiving utility work will be repaved after the work completion.

If you have any concerns, please contact Jonathan Thompson: 512-974-1507

The board will provide more information on the Pemberton website as it becomes available.
