• Pattern is often used symbolically to represent many things: people, beliefs, the natural world, history, tradition
• Colours and shapes have specific meanings, and are passed down from generation to generation
• The predictability of pattern is important in establishing a historical tradition and cultural practice
• We are all familiar with the use of pattern as decoration, from clothing, to everyday objects, to home decorating
• Here is an example of an elaborate use of pattern in home decoration

What is a Zentangle?
• In a word, a doodle– A structured, contained doodle
• The term 'Zentangle' was coined by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas when, one day, Maria described her experience, as she created her art, as "feeling timeless, free and engendering a sense of deep well-being”
• Rick recognized that she was in a meditative state and so Zentangles were born

Begin to fill your Zentangle
• Choose a pattern and begin to fill in one of those negative spaces
• Move to another and fill it with the same, similar or completely different pattern
• It can look good to see a pattern continue under the grid lines

• For this art project, you will create a zentangle
• Your zentangle picture should have a design within the piece (animal, abstract design, person, etc.)
• Be creative and try to use many different patterns; make some patterns up or use the internet if you need suggestions
