During our 7th edition of this newsletter you will notice a new and brighter look, thanks

to Dio Zhao, our new creative director and editor.

The last few months have been tough and challenging but I’m pleased to say that in spite of these circumstances we have made some very good progress on several fronts.

Under the leadership of Jon in Thailand our Patton branded equipment is now specified in all major retail outlets including Tesco, Villa and Foodland supermarkets.

In India under the leadership of Swatantra we opened our new sales office and warehouse in Mumbai in March to coincide with our participation at ACREX, the biggest trade exhibition in the country. This month we are opening our sales office in Bangalore.

With these additions we will have offices to cover all major regions ofthe Indian market very effectively.

With Stuart at the helm in Australia, we are in the process of opening a new branch in Melbourne. This will be our 13th trade outlet in Australia. We plan to start trading from 1st June.

Although the business en-vironment is very tough in NZ, we have made some good progress with the dairy industry under Philip’s lead-ership. We have also made huge progress on health and safety areas of the business.

As we celebrate our 90th Anniversary this year we would like to thank all our customers, staff, suppliers and other stakeholders for encour-aging and inspiring us to be better than the year before.

On 4th April, Patton Auckland invited NZ Fire Service onsite for a fire awareness session around home fire safety. All of the 42 staff

attended.

The Fire Services shared their valuable knowledge around home fire safety includ-ing the number one cause of home fires unattended cooking. Discussion took place on how loose cables and overloaded multi-boards with double adaptors can cause fire. We were advised to check and dust the ex-tension cords regularly, to ensure they are not twisted, are tightly plugged in to avoid sparking and, if possible, to have multi-boards with surge protection and overload switches for computers.

The Fire Service put a huge emphasis on working smoke alarms and gave many ex-amples of how lives had been saved.

They advised that just as we have fire drills in the workplace and at schools, it is equal-ly important to have escape plans for home and to practise them regularly. We should also let our overnight guests know where the meeting place is in the event of a fire.

Due to thick smoke and panic most people are unsure of what to do during a fire and a plan saves valuable minutes and lives. Everyone was given a home challenge, to find the way to the main door while crawling on their knees with eyes covered.

Finally we had a practical demonstration of how dangerous unattended cooking is and why it is so important not to throw water on a fry pan containing oil that’s on fire. We were advised to have a fire blanket in the kitchen for a cheap and efficient method of smothering a fire in a pan.

Overall everyone had the opportunity to take something back to their families and friends and to make their home fire safe.

This year, we are planning to introduce several new exciting initiatives under the Health and Safety umbrella. This is one of the many which encourages work/life bal-ance. Previously we have had seminars with Civil Defence, NZ Budget Services, Skills 4 Work and on-site health checks/flu vacci-nations have all helped the staff to improve their well-being.

With mixed feelings of sadness and joy we announce the retirement of Andrew Sekula, Engineering Man-ager New Zealand.

Andrew joined Patton’s 6-1/2 years ago bringing a wealth of knowledge and industry experience to the company. Starting out, in his young ap-prentice days, working on ammonia and other natural refrigerants things have almost gone full circle as he leaves the industry with an increas-ing popularity of these eco-friendly refrigerants. Involved in product development and the ex-pansion of our capital plant range, Andrew was

always quick to keep a project on track with his “cut to the chase” attitude and no fuss analy-sis. Being the technical and managerial support for our Thailand and Indian operations, he gave valuable and knowledgeable advice to these once fledgling operations and indirectly helped to grow our business in these growing markets.

Though staff, suppliers and customers alike will miss Andrew, with his tough veneer but under-lying caring nature, we know he’s had a great career in this ever-changing industry and now is the time for him to direct his energies to family, friends and that nagging golf handicap.

Patton Australia will soon be open-ing a branch in West Melbourne, Victoria.

The building will be an asset to the al-ready rapidly growing brand that is Pat-ton Refrigeration HVAC. It will bring the number of Victorian branches to four. The building comprises a total area of approx. 740m2 with 252m2 being the showroom and downstairs office. The branch is situated close to other whole-salers and major arterial routes includ-ing citylink. This will enable easy access for all customers to enter and leave the area promptly. Initially the branch will be staffed by Ashley Chua (Branch Manager), Andrew Galliano (Engineering Sales Manager, Victoria) plus an internal sales/store person. Its vision is to capture the ma-jority of service related work in the CBD and surrounding metro suburbs. They will be looking also at promoting the branch in the eastern district where the

leading mechanical services companies are situated.

The aim is to get back to basics and deliver knowledge, service and advice to all customers. This together with a friendly stable environment should be a good recipe for a successful outcome for Patton. On top of this it is hoped to build our customers trust that we are here to stay and want to expand to meet their needs.

The opening of this new branch will also complement our existing Victo-rian branches with added back up of staff and stock levels. Patton is a brand that is gradually becoming more wide-ly known, not only as a quality product but also as a recognisable wholesale network throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Charity Rides Again with Andrew Galliano

Every year I set myself a cou-ple of challenges to achieve and this year has not been any different. I suppose I

am a glutton for punishment!

I have been a keen cyclist for quite a few years now and can be seen most Saturday mornings either doing a training ride down Beach Road in Melbourne or rac-ing for my local cycle club. I find it is always good to set a challenge of one sort or another in work and play.

I started the year on Australia Day with the Alpine Classic - a charity ride for Kids with Cancer. The original course of 200kms was going to pass over three ma-jor mountains at an average alti-tude of 1300 metres in the alpine region of Victoria. However due to the fires we could only travel over Mount Buffalo which brought the ride back to 150km’s. Still a very hard ride, being a category 1 climb for you cyclist “nuts” out there. Cramps galore and a 38°C day made it even harder!

The next ride was one I do every year, the MS ride, for which I raised nearly $500.00 (thanks to those of you at Patton who donated). For this 25km ride I was part of a group that my brother-in-law and I joined due to some team mem-bers never being on a bike before! I normally enter the 50km ride. It started in the CBD of Melbourne, headed over the Westgate Bridge then back to Carlton just north of Melbourne. This is the only time

amateur riders are given access to the Bridge and is a good chance to get a different view of our beau-tiful city.

Later I hope to look at doing an-other charity event or challenge whether riding, running or some-thing different. And there might be a chance that some of you guys may want to join me and challenge yourself!

For the event of Acrex 2013 held on 7th to 9th March 2013 at Mumbai, and organized by the Indian Soci-ety of Heating, Refrigerating and

Air Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE), the aim was “to surpass the expecta-tions of the previous shows and set new precedents and standards for all such future exhibitions”.

Team Patton rose to this challenge and had their most successful exhibi-tion stand covering 42 square metres. The range displayed included products from Patton, Synergy, Embraco, Dor-in, Uniweld, Appion, Think, Supco and Fieldpiece. Many of the industry lead-ers who visited our booth appreciated the design and layout. We would like to thank them all. Sameer travelled from New Zealand and attended each day.

Under the banner of “Dedicated to an eco-friendly environment” companies were encouraged to display environ-mentally friendly, energy saving and

sustainable products and services to meet the demanding, ever growing Indian market.

The evaporator range from Patton and the portable brazing torch from Uniweld were big attractions and numerous vis-itors showed interest in these products.

Some key customers who showed keen interest in our product range were LG, Daikin, GEA, Panasonic, Bharti Walmart, Voltas, Carrier, Celfrost, Bluestar, Arneg, Stulz, Ice Make and Werner Finlay.

During the three days of Acrex we were able to present certificates to our deal-ers who visited from all over India. The dealers met our agency partners and interacted with the sales team to ex-pand and update their knowledge of our product range.

An Auspicious Beginning at Mumbai Warehouse

Patton India is pleased to announce the opening of its west zone operations, along with the hub warehouse

at Bhiwandi approximately 40km north east of Mumbai in the Thane District of Maharashtra State. Bhiwandi is an ideal location for the warehouse as it is outside the Octroi Zone (local tax) on the Mumbai-Agra Highway ensuring smooth connectivity with Mum-bai, Thane and Nasik. This ena-bles close proximity for import shipment clearance at Mumbai port and prompt, efficient deliv-ery of materials to all the regions of west, south and east India.

The warehouse was inaugurat-ed on 9th March – the final day of ACREX 2013.

It began with a havan pooja (sacred fire ceremony) and prayers to the Hindu deities for the prosperity of Patton’s new operations. The entire ritual took about 90 minutes and the Patton India team, along with Sameer Handa and Swatantra Gagneja attended the ceremony. A coconut breaking rite was performed by Sameer to mark an auspicious beginning. This is one of the most common rituals in Hinduism before an activity of any magnitude is undertaken.

Everyone taking part in the ceremony is given a small part of the coconut flesh to eat. The first invoice of commercial activities from the new location was also signed by Sameer.

This regional warehouse and office will be advantageous for local billing and the sales team based in the west zone will focus its attention on the commercial capital of the country i.e. Mumbai.

For the next step, they are planning to register as an excise warehouse which will help Patton India cater to the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) business.

Perhaps the greatest success is the inclusion and first order from Tesco Lotus. Tesco is one of the biggest hypermarket chains in Thailand, established in 1998 with millions of customer visits each week. Although

they stock western products the largest proportion of their inventory is made up of locally sourced product. In addition the stores also carry a huge variety of non-food items.

The Tesco Lotus brand includes express stores and gas sta-tions in addition to hypermarkets - all needing refrigeration for perishable items. Tesco Lotus in Thailand controls all the refrigeration systems for Tesco in ASEAN and is the key to Patton’s future success.

At the end of our second month of marketing, our sales have already far exceeded the Thailand 2012 sales. Our first Tesco Lotus order is in production and will be delivered and installed soon.

Our customers now include:

Villa Supermarket, Phuket – New Store (100% Patton Digital products with Super Coat Corrosion Protection).

Villa Supermarket, Udon – New Store (100% Patton Digital products and Unit Coolers).

Tesco Lotus, Bangpakong – Full Hyper market refurbishment with our Partner Trane.

Villa Supermarket, Sena – New Store (50% Patton Digital products).
