Red’s Bull Alert: S&P 500 hits 17-month high, a tndhe NAS rose for a 6th day running, matching a streak that ended on February 18, and the S&P mid-cap index rose for a 12th consecutive day for the first time since Y 1996.

. Re-cap of the US Stock Market Action for the session ending 11 March 2010

The S&P 500 hit a 17 month closing high as rising bank shares led a late rally that lifted stocks on Thursday, more than offsetting worries China may move to cool its overheating economy.

US financial stocks added to gains, helped by the possibility new banking regulations being studied by Congress (I said this before and say it again) could be and likely will be watered down if there are any at all because the appetites and sense of urgency for world financial reform have waned as markets have rebounded and the world economy is showing signs of recovery. Citigroup shares rose 5.6% to US$4.18, were among the top gainers, after its chief executive told investors he views the troubled bank as "well positioned to return to sustained profitability.

The DJIA added 44.51 pts, or 0.42%, to close at 10,611.84, the S& 500 Index gained 4.63 pts, or 0.40%, to close at 1,150.24, and the NAS tallied up + 9.51 pts, or 0.40%, to end the session at 2,368.46.

The US trade deficit narrowed unexpectedly as Crude Oil imports fell to their lowest level since February 1999, but exports slipped after rising in the eight previous months.

Advancing Sectors: Financials (+0.9%), Consumer Discretionary (+0.6%), Materials (+0.5%), Health Care (+0.4%), Tech (+0.4%), Telecom (+0.4%), Industrials (+0.3%), Utilities (+0.3%), Consumer Staples (+0.1%) Declining Sectors: (None) Unchanged: EnergyDJ30

Volume and Breadth: About 8.1B/shrs traded on the NYSE, the AMEX and NAS, below last year's average of 9.65B/shrs. Advancers outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by 3 to 2, and on the NAS, 15 stocks rose for each 11 that fell.

This is Estée Lauder Company (EL): The firm's Estée and Bobbi brands are counted among some of the closest friends to women worldwide. Estée Lauder sells cosmetics, fragrances, and skin care products, with brands including upscale Estée Lauder and Clinique and professional Bobbi Brown essentials. Its lines are sold in department stores, company stores, and by specialty retailers, as well as online. The firm has expanded its chain of freestanding retail stores (primarily for its M.A.C, Origins, and Aveda brands). The founding Lauder family controls about 84% of its voting shares. Estée Lauder launched a Tom Ford collection in 2005 and in 2007 sold its Rodan + Fields line. CEO Fabrizio Freda, a veteran of Procter & Gamble, joined the firm in 2008.

Competitive Landscape

Demand is driven by population growth and consumer preferences. The profitability of individual companies depends on product innovation, effective sales and marketing, and efficient operations. Large companies have scale advantages in purchasing, manufacturing, distribution, and marketing. Small companies can compete effectively by offering specialized products. This is Google Inc. (GOOG): Google operates the leading Internet search engine, offering targeted search results from billions of Web pages. Results are based on a proprietary algorithm -- Google's technology for ranking Web pages is called PageRank. The company generates nearly all of its revenue through ad sales. Large companies are advantaged in being able to serve the varied needs of large customers, but small companies can be competitive through special talent or lower pricing or through special services. The industry is labor intensive, but the high value of the product produces annual revenue per employee of about US$150,000.
