Best Valentine’s date movies Four Bobcats representing Theodore as Mobile Azalea Trail Maids, 2013-2014 By Jessica Silva Reporter We have welcomed a new year, and now it is time to welcome a new group of Azalea Trail Maids. Many junior girls across the coun- ty had the dream of becoming Trail Maids, but only 50 were chosen. The selection process was long and stressful. To begin, each school conducted their individual interviews to see who would represent the school; each school is allowed a certain amount of spots based on the num- ber of girls in the junior class. Then, those girls went on to com- pete in the county-level interviews, which consisted of a pool of 100 girls. After that process, the long-antic- ipated letter which tells the appli- cant whether or not she was select- ed was mailed to each girl’s house. Marissa Horstman, Gracie Hutto, Lauren Hodges, and Mara Baker were four of the girls select- ed to be 2013-2014 Azalea Trail Maids, and they happen to be our very own Bobcats! Soon after receiving the letter, the new Trail Maids attended a cere- mony where they were told what color their dress will be. “Yes, I do like it,” said Lauren Hodges, when asked if she liked her yellow dress color. Horstman was assigned a peach dress, Hutto will wear a lavendar dress, and Baker’s dress will be green. The girls will be able to show off their dresses and their leadership skills as seniors when they attend their appearances beginning next school year. “I have really wanted to be an Azalea Trail Maid all of my life, but when I realized the advantag- es of it, it truly became a goal of mine,” said Marissa Horstman, when asked when she realized she wanted to become a Trail Maid. Gracie Hutto said, “My parents and friends were encouraging,” regarding who influenced her to go after her dream of becoming an Azalea Trail Maid. When asked what inspired her to become an Azalea Trail Maid, Mara Baker stated, “Trail is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a little girl; Trail Maids were girls I could look up to and treat as role models.” If you are a freshman or sopho- more girl who would like to be- come a Trail Maid, do not hesitate in going after your dream, but remember that preparation for this honor starts before your junior year. Let’s get ready to ROCK! Battle of the Bands ‘13By Randi Jean WalkerReporter

Have you ever wanted to be in a band and compete for a prize? Every year at Theodore, there is a competition called Battle of the Bands. If you can play an instrument or you have a friend that can play an instrument, then you should get together and play that funky music for Battle of the Bands! You need at least two people in your band, and one of you must play some type of instrument. Also, if you are a Theodore stu-dent and your other band members are not, you may still enter and compete. Have your lyrics written on paper to be approved, and remember, if you have anything vulgar in your songs, you may not participate in

the competition. If you would like to be in the competition, go to Mr. Grimes in room A224, and sign up. There is a thirty dollar entry fee.

Hurry, because there are only 6-10 spots to be filled. All bands must be signed up no later than Friday, March 1st, 2013. During the event, performances

will be judged by local DJs. The top three bands will be given prize money, but the amounts will be announced later. The assembly for Battle of the Bands will be on March 28, 2013, in the Theodore High School gym during 5th block. Anyone wanting to attend must pay three dollars for a ticket. Chick-Fil-A will be giving out coupons and other free things, and Zaxby’s will be selling chicken. The East Coast Club will be selling drinks. More information will be avail-ble as the date nears, but the bands are signing up now. If you want your band showcased at this event, be sure to sign up as soon as possible!

Do you remember last semem-ster when students were allowed to wear a t-shirt of their choice if they brought in at least one canned good? There was a very specific reason for that canned food drive, and many students brought in cans for the occasion.

These cans were used for The-odore to participate in the 2nd annual Can Structure Competition in Mobile. Mrs. Legros recruited art students to brainstorm and build a sculpture made of cans. She left the students in charge of what they wanted to build and how

they wanted to build it. The theme for this year was aviation. On January 8, all of the compet-ing schools met at the Exploreum and had about 4 hours to construct their sculptures. The art students were able to sculpt a very good airplane with

the canned foods that they had received. The Bobcats were very creative with their bi-plane design, but the team placed second, behind David-son. The cans stayed on display for one week, then they were donated to the Bay Area Food Bank.

JROTC attends county Military Ball, names Senior Hannah Milne queenBy Amber ReinhartReporter

Murphy High School students and teachers agree: The changes have been very difficultBy Sarah EricksonReporter

The 44th annual JROTC Military Ball was held at Fort Whiting in downtown Mobile on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Over 500 cadets and their dates attended. The music was provided by DJ Jang, and from what I saw on the dance floor, he hit all the right notes. The Bobcat Battalion was well represented with the largest group of any school there. Each school in attendance selects its own Military Ball queen, and Hannah Milne was selected as the Military Ball Queen for Theodore. Milne was nothing short of ele-gent when she was called out in a hot-pink sweetheart neckline gown with an A-line skirt. Hannah was escorted by her boyfriend, Josh Fuqua, who attends Mobile Christian. Our own Emma Valentine, who

is the highest ranking cadet in Mo-bile County, served as the narrator and Master of Ceremonies. When Theodore JROTC leader LTC Adams was asked for a quote about the ball, he simply replied, “Why can’t they move that fast when we are doing PT?” Adams also added, “While every-one had a great time, the prize for wildest dancing should go to Della Wilkerson for her exceptional moves.” 1SG Callister also voiced his views on the ball and stated, “I was impressed by our cadets, and how well they represented our school.” “They clean up really well!” he added. We are looking forward to next year’s ball, and hopefully it will be as amazing as this year’s ball turned out to be!

On Christmas day 2012, severe weather and a tornado affected many areas in Mobile, including Murphy High School. Not only did the tornado affect the school building itself, it also affected the students and their education. Due to structural damages at the old site, Murphy High School is now temporarily located at the same site as Clark Magnet School, where students attend classes in 60 portable classrooms.

“Our days were really long in the beginning,” said teacher Annette Johnson when speaking of the nine-hour days (or more) students and teachers were spending when the semester began for them one week after the rest of Mobile County returned to school. Days are now shorter for them, and it is getting a bit easier to adjust. According to Ms. Johnson, Mur-phy teachers do not have to take the bus to Clark; they are now able

to drive. However, students who drove to Murphy last semester saw quite a change as a result of the move. Since student parking is not available at Clark, students who normally drove to Murphy now have to park their cars at Murphy and ride a bus to Clark. “Having to ride a bus to Clark is a little agitating,” said student Ethan Callaghan. “Since I was able to drive for a while, having to pile on a bus is

different, but I guess I will adapt,” added Callaghan. Even with difficulties and incon-veniences of moving to a different location, students and teachers agree that they are fortunate that no one was at the school when the tor-nado struck because the outcome could have been much different. There is not a date set for the completion of the school repairs, but students and faculty will adapt to the new system until Murphy High can be fixed.

February is Black History MonthBy Courtney WalleyReporter

Whether you are a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, every student here at Theodore is working towards the same goal: to become a senior and graduate. But have you ever wondered what it is like to be in that posi-tion? To be a senior? Many of us often wonder what it feels like to be at the top of the high school food chain. To help all of us underclassmen understand what it is like to be at the top, some seniors answered a few questions for me. Here is what they had to say: Q: Will you miss Theodore?“Yes, I will miss Theodore! These have been the best 4 years of my life. From the friends I have made to all the memories I take with me, Theodore will forever be in my heart!” - Kyle McCarthyQ: What will you not miss about Theodore? “I will not miss the long, boring classes where we just sit and look at the walls for hours straight. I will not miss the drama and fights that go on every other day that

make us lose break. Lastly, I will not miss doing all the work that teaches me nothing.” - Katlyn Wade Q: How does it feel to have finally become a senior? “It feels very overwhelming to finally be a senior. I have been in school all my life and now it is ending. I can’t wait until college though. I’m going to miss being a kid and not having my parents always telling me what to do. I’m actually going to miss that, but I’m ready to move on to the next step! Being a senior is amazing!” - Sarah RossQ: Are you ready to graduate? “Yes I am very ready to graduate! I hate waking up early every day! Although, I think I will miss it.”- Elizabeth AustinQ: Do you have senioritis? “Yes, definitely. It is so hard to make myself wake up in the morn-ings and go to class.” - Kelsey Seabury Keep working toward that senior status, underclassmen, and one day we will know what these seniors are talking about!

Tell us about it, Seniors!By Brooke JordanReporter

African Americans have played a major role in our history. Black History Month, which lasts throughout February, has been cel-ebrated in America for more than 35 years. The theme of this year’s black history month is at the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality. Although there are many Afri-can Americans who have played an important role in our history, the individuals listed below are recognized for their extraordinary achievements and stories.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the most famous people in black history because he was involved in the American Civil Rights Move-ment from 1955 to 1968. The Civil Rights Movement was important because it helped stop

segregation throughout the country. King started the boycott of Mont-gomery’s segregated buses. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929, and graduated college from Morehouse College in 1948. To this day, he is still one of the most known African Americans in history.

Barack Obama

Barack Obama made history when he became the first African American president. His term as senator in Illinois started on January 4, 2005, and ended on November 16, 2008. He is currently in his second term as president of the United States.

Rosa Parks

On Thursday, December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks boarded a city bus and sat with three other African Amer-icans. A few stops later, the front four rows of the bus were filled and a white man was left standing. According to law, blacks and whites could not occupy the same row, so the bus driver asked all of the African Americans seated in that row of seats to move to allow a white man to sit down. Rosa Parks was told to move, but when she refused to do so, she was arrested. This arrest helped to motivate many African Americans to be-come more involved in the civil rights movement.

Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was born in Dorchester County, Alabama, in 1820. She was very well known throughout her lifetime She was known as “Moses”, and helped slaves escape through the Underground Railroad and helped over 300 slaves get the freedom that they deserved. Tubman died on March 10, 1913, at the age of 94. You may have already known about these important people from our history; however, the internet and the month of February can help you get motivated to learn more. Black History Month is a great time to to learn more about African American history.

The best of “The Not-So-Great” pick up lines Compiled by Sarah Erickson - If you were a burger at McDon-ald’s, you would be called... the McGorgeous. - You must be Jamaican because you’re Jamaican me crazy! - If you were a booger, I’d pick you first! - Did you have Lucky Charms for breakfast?... because you’re looking magically delicious. - Do you have a library card?... be-cause I’m checking you out! - If you were words on a page, you’d be what they call fine print. - Don’t walk into that building; the sprinklers might go off! - Your legs must be tired, because you’ve been running through my mind all day. - Do you have a map, because I can-not help but get lost in your eyes. - Life without you would be like a broken pencil… pointless. - Be careful, your license is going to get suspended for driving all these guys crazy! - If I got a nickel for everyone I’ve met who is as beautiful as you, I’d have 5 cents. - Remember me? Oh, that’s right, I’ve only met you in my dreams! - You must be the reason for Global Warming, because you are SMOKIN’! - I would say, “God bless you,” but it looks like he already did! - Do you have a raisin? No? Well how about a date? - Excuse me; I think I dropped something… MY JAW!! - If looks could kill, you would be a weapon of mass destruction. - I have never had any of my dreams come true until the moment I met you.

For more cheesy pick-up lines, be sure to go to lolriot.com! Remember: use these at your own risk!

Valentine’s Day is here! This time of year is either loved or hated by people all over the world. People in relationships will be going out and buying cute, cuddly teddy bears and chocolates for one another, saying cheesy pick up lines, going out on dates, etc. But, what if you do not have a boyfriend or girlfriend? What if you do not have a Valentine on this day of love? Some people make it a priority to find someone to be their Valentine. Many will go to great lengths, such as starting a relationship with someone whom they do not actu-ally like, just because they do not

want to feel alone and unwanted during this “lovey dovey” season. If you do not have a significant other, do not feel like you have to go out and get someone just for Valentine’s Day. What some people do not under-stand is that Valentine’s Day is not only for lovers. It is not only about the choco-lates, candy and roses, or who has the best boyfriend/girlfriend, but it is also a day to show other people you care about love; it can be your family, friends, or even a pet. It is nice to be one of those lucky people to have the perfect Valen-tine on Valentine’s Day, but if you are single, do not think it is such a

big deal to have a Valentine. There are no stipulations on how to spend your Valentine’s Day. Sometimes, it is just good to slow down and realize what Valen-tine’s Day is all about. It is about spending the holiday with someone, or even something, that you care about and love. Enjoy your Valentine’s Day!

Get me the 9X out of here!By Randi Jean WalkerSenior Reporter

In my years as a student, I have noticed that there has been a steadi-ly decreasing amount of field trips. In most elementary schools, each class has at least one field trip near-ly every quarter. Once students arrive in mid-dle school, the decline in these off-campus experiences begins. Students might have one field trip every six months during the 6th-8th grade years. High school, however, is where the educational excursions come to a grinding halt.

Students in high school are lucky to take a field trip once a year. To make matters worse, some teachers are deciding not to sign the permission forms that are required from students in order to attend the field trips. How upsetting is it when you go to your teacher all pumped up for that once-in-a-blue-moon field trip and they refuse to sign the form? The only time a teacher should not sign a form is if the student has bad grades or if he or she has

serious attendance issues. As each long and drawn out grade goes by, experimental field trips are replaced with so called “hands-on” classes. In my opinion, students should have more educational field trips in high school. Maybe when students get out of the classroom and go somewhere to learn about things or experience new things, it will improve their grades and they could, therefore, go on more field trips.

A school that prays together stays together, so let us do just that! In early September, one of our classmates, Tyler Huynh, was in a terrible car accident. During the time Tyler was in the hospital, many students gathered at the amphitheater to pray for him and his family. Since that time, students have been meeting at the amphitheater

to pray together before first block every morning, except Fridays. This is a way for students to connect with each other and pray for their school and for fellow classmates. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) would like to keep prayer in school to help make a difference and reach out to those who need help and prayer.

Members of FCA encourage anyone who is interested in coming and praying to meet with them at the amphitheatre at 7:00a.m. every morning, except on Fridays. On Fridays, FCA invites you to meet with other Christians in room A211 at 6:50 a.m., where they join together for fellowship with stu-dent and adult speakers. If you have any further questions,

speak with any of the FCA leaders: Sabra Newman, Ryan Todd, Ash-ley McNorton or Kyle McCarthy. “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” – Matthew 18:20. The power of prayer is strong, and it is even stronger when we all pray together!

The most exciting event of the year for college basketball fans around the world is the NCAA March Madness Tournament. Nothing compares to this con-stant watching of basketball from dawn to dusk for about a month. There is plenty of excitement in-store for basketball junkies this year. The March Madness Tournament is a single elimination tournament held every spring in the U.S. The tournament features six-ty-eight line-ups from many divi-sions and conferences. According to ezinearticles.com, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has main-tained the event since it was initi-ated by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 1939. The competition bracket includes a variety of division one schools from all across the nation. The top twenty-five ranked teams always have a spot in the tourna-ment, and more times than not, the most premier programs will have a spot regardless of ranking. It is half-way through the thirty game regular season, and students of THS have voiced their opinions on who they think will win the title at the big dance this year. Senior Dae-wangelo Powell said that he believes that Duke Univer-sity’s big man, Mason Plumlee, is

the key to their success. “Nobody in the league can stop Mason; the only person who can stop him is himself.” Sophomore Tydrek Scott, a Kentucky fan, said “Kentucky just

got off to a slow start, but we are gonna pick it up in the second half of the season and win it.” Be sure to fill out your tour-nament selection brackets from www.teamrankings.com so you

Could things get any worse for cyclist Lance Armstrong and Notre Dame standout Manti Te’o?By Garrett Akridge Reporter

By Wayne TharleSenior Reporter The year of 2012 was an unusual one for Heisman trophy candidate and Notre Dame football standout Manti Te’o. Te’o stayed a bit under the radar prior to the announcement in Sep-tember that his grandmother and his girlfriend had passed away on the same day. After this was brought to the me-dia’s attention, it was only a mat-ter of time before questions were being asked. In January, the press broke this news: “Manti Te’o’s dead girl-friend, the most heartbreaking and inspirational story in college football, is a hoax.” Much of the focus on the source of the hoax was directed on a young California man, Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, but nothing has been confirmed as of now and the inves-

tigation is continuing. During an interview with ABC reporter, Katie Couric, Manti Te’o admitted to lying to the press and the media. After being asked by Couric as to why he lied, he said “Katie, put yourself in my position. What would you do?” Te’o’s father claims that his son is “not a liar, he’s a kid” and was a victim of someone’s sick and cruel joke. The life of a young and upcom-ing star has gone from potentially claiming the Heisman trophy, to watching himself become every journalist’s topic of choice day in and day out. For more information regarding the Manti Te’o girlfriend hoax, visit www.abc.com.

Lance Armstrong was recent-ly stripped of his 2000 Olympic bronze medal after the United States Anti-Doping Agency con-firmed that he used steroids as a performance enhancing drug, as well as the blood booster EPO (Erythropoietin), and had blood transfusions in order to hide his actions. The world-known cyclist had re-peatedly continued to deny the al-legations. It was not until January 17th, 2013 that he finally admitted to Oprah Winfrey that he did, in fact, use steroids, took testosterone, HGH (Human Growth Hormones), and also had blood transfusions. Oprah asked him in the interview, “Was it possible to win the Tour De France without doping?” Arm-strong replied, “No.” Seven Tour De France titles, a

record setting number, were all stripped away from the well known cyclist and survivor of cancer. Armstrong had also helped to develop a nonprofit cancer orga-nization, but due to the scandal, he is no longer the chairman of the organization, the Livestrong Foundation. He was looked up to by millions, only to be looked down upon now as a cheater and a liar. For more information about the Lance Armstrong scandal, visit the Huffington post website or visit the ESPN website.

The Notebook or 50 First dates?Favorite movies to watch on Valentine’s Day By Ali HughesReporter February 14 is the day that cou-ples all over the world show their love for one another. Tons of people will struggle over the thought of planning the perfect night for their significant other. They want the night to be re-membered for many years. You could go all out and spend hundreds of dollars on your Val-entine, but why not do something simple instead? Dinner at a nice restaurant and then a movie at home, cuddling

with your special someone, should be a magical, yet simple, way to let your significant other know that you are still head over heels for him or her. The dinner part is pretty easy; just take your Valentine to his or her favorite place to eat. Dinner is over; now what should you do about the movie? What movies are sweet and rom-natic enough to watch on Valen-tine’s Day? To help solve this dilemma, 100

students were polled to see which of these movies would be best to put in the DVD player on Valen-tine’s Day. Ten movies that are well known as romantic, “chick-flicks” were chosen. The ten movies were The Note-book, Valentine’s Day, The Vow, The Lucky One, Dear John, Listen to Your Heart, A Walk to Remem-ber, Crazy Stupid Love, The Last Song, and 50 First Dates. Of these top ten, these three

received the most votes during our poll: The Vow, and 50 First Dates, and coming in with the most votes was The Notebook. So, there you have it! If you were not sure about the movie choice before, you now have a list of nice, mushy films that come highly rec-ommended. No matter which movie you choose, your Valentine is sure to thank you and enjoy the thought that went in to spending time with you on Valentine’s Day!
