Dear Parents,
As January comes to a close, I am excited to be a part of the celebration of Catholic Schools
across the United States. Sunday will mark the beginning of Catholic Schools Week. St. Pius X
students will serve as greeters at the doors before weekend masses, our families will bring up the
Offertory gifts, and individual students will thank parishioners for their support before all masses.
Throughout the week, we will recognize and celebrate different groups that help with Catholic
education. Catholic Schools Week is such an amazing time to be grateful for the gift of our faith
and the ability to pass it on to our children in such a special way. Remember to visit your
children’s classrooms during our Open House on Sunday.
Yours in Christ,
Mrs. Lonnemann
Counselor’s Corner
Dear Mrs. Clark,
Could you recommend any books that I can read with my child for No Name-Calling Week? I would like to use this
as an opportunity to talk to my child about the effects of teasing and name calling and what it means to be respectful
to others.
Sincerely, Reading about Respect
Dear Reading about Respect,
There are many different books out there that help children learn about respect or what happens when we tease
others. Here are a few suggestions on books that your child may enjoy:
Mr. Peabody’s Apples by Madonna. "Mr. Peabody’s Apples takes place in 1949 in Happville, USA. Mr. Peabody is the beloved elementary school teacher and baseball coach, who one day finds himself ostracized when rumors spread through the small town. Mr. Peabody silences the gossip with an unforgettable and poignant lesson about how we must choose our words carefully to avoid causing harm to others.”
Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. “Chrysanthemum loves her name, until she starts school, where the other children make fun of it. With the help of her teacher, though, she learns to love it again.”
Just Kidding by Trudy Ludwig. “D.J.'s friend Vince has a habit of teasing D.J. and then saying, Just kidding!" as if it will make everything okay. It doesn't, but D.J. is afraid that if he protests, his friends will think he can't take a joke. With the help of his father, brother, and an understanding teacher, D.J. progresses from feeling helpless to taking positive action, undermining the power of two seemingly harmless words.”
The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. “For generations, The Grouchy Ladybug has delighted readers of all ages with the story of a bad-tempered bug who won't say "please" or "thank you," won't share, and thinks she is bigger and better than anyone else. As children follow the Grouchy Ladybug on her journey, they will learn the important concepts of time, size, and shape, as well as the benefits of friendship and good manners.”

What’s new in the Classroom
Sixth Grade!
Simple Solutions and other resources to Supplement Math Class
Each week from Monday through Thursdays the students complete a Simple Solutions
lesson. Then on Friday, the students are given a Simple Solutions quiz to assess their mastery
of the content. The following Tuesday the students receive their graded quizzes back and are
encouraged to make corrections and turn them in by Friday. The students receive half credit
for their corrections.
Each Simple Solution quiz problem is identified
with a math code. The students have been
updating a Google Sheet. On the Sheet they list
the math code and indicate the types of problems
that require additional study.
The students are encouraged to
use the following resources to
further research and practice the
problems they missed. The
students can look up these codes in
khanacademy.org and ixl.com for
further explanation and practice.
These are great resources for the
students to reference as they are
working to master the math
content.
Thank you.
