Message from the Board Chairman

Iam so very honored to have been elected as

Chairman of the Board of the Humane Society

of Greater Miami. My husband, Milton, and I are

involved with many worthwhile charities but the Humane

Society is very dear to us. We have always been advocates

for abandoned and homeless animals. I am very proud to

be part of such a well-run organization whose mission I

strongly support. Every animal cared for at our shelter is

free from the threat of euthanasia until an adoptive family

is found. More than 2,500 animals, every year, find their

human companions and begin their new lives in loving

homes. Today, more than 300 homeless dogs, cats,

puppies, and kittens are cared for every day at the Soffer

and Fine Adoption Center.

Anyone who owns a pet knows that pets give

unconditional love to every member of the family. Put as

simply as possible, pets make us feel good! Lucky dogs

and cats are in loving homes, but there are countless abandoned and abused animals that can’t

speak for themselves and need our help. The Humane Society is one of the most valuable

resources for them. We are not government funded and rely solely on the generosity of the

community to support our mission. Funds are raised through private donations, fundraising events

like Pawpurrazzi, and grants. For this reason, we are so appreciative of your financial support and

attendance at this event.

One of our goals is to end our community’s pet overpopulation problem. To meet this challenge,

we performed more than 13,000 spay/neuter surgeries last year. In addition, staff and volunteers

of the Humane Society of Greater Miami travel to schools, libraries, organizations and clubs to

teach the community about responsible pet ownership. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what

we do, but I hope it gives you an idea of how the Humane Society helps animals and reaches out

to the community with a variety of programs.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for

your support tonight. We can sleep a little better knowing that we have helped many homeless

and abandoned animals by your attendance here at Pawpurrazzi. I know you will have a wonderful

time at this one-of-a-kind event.

Sincerely,

Pat Wallace

Once again, we are entering a new year of challenging economictimes. Many more families are unable to keep their beloved pets dueto their financial difficulties. However, it is times like these that the HumaneSociety of Greater Miami recognizes, above all, those that havesupported our efforts to help achieve our mission. We thank youfor your continued help.

With the funds raised over this past year, we were able to increasepet adoptions, provide affordable spay/neuter services and low-cost vaccinations, as well as, educate children and adults aboutresponsible pet ownership.

We are entering into our second year of partnership with the ASPCA(The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals),Miami-Dade Animal Services, and The Cat Network, Inc. to increase

adoptions in Miami-Dade County. The Humane Society of Greater Miami is proud to be selected aspart of this collaborative effort to create a more “humane community”. With their help and yours,we are already making a difference.

As we move into our 76th year, we would like to acknowledge with gratitude, the enormousdedication, support, and hard work from the chairpeople and committees of Pawpurrazzi. Who We Are...

The Humane Society of Greater Miami hasbeen helping the abandoned animals inMiami-Dade County since 1936. Today, more than 300 homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are cared for every dayat the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center inNorth Miami Beach. We are able to givethese animals a second chance byproviding food, shelter, and medical carefor as long as it takes to find them a kindand loving home.

Thanks to a major commitment from theASPCA (The American Society for thePrevention of Cruelty toAnimals), and in partnershipwith Miami-Dade AnimalServices and The Cat Network,we are proud to be part of acollaborative effort to create amore “humane community”, byincreasing the number ofanimals who leave the sheltersystem alive. Miami-DadeCounty is one of 11communities, nationwide, chosen to be a partner with the ASPCA.

The Humane Society runs two veterinaryclinics, one in North Miami Beach andanother in Cutler Bay. Our goal is to endour community’s pet overpopulationproblem. To meet this challenge, weperformed more than 13,000 spay/neutersurgeries last year. Programs are availablethat provide free resources for vaccinationsand spay/neuter surgeries for thosefinancially disadvantaged people of ourcommunity.

Every animal cared for at our shelter is freefrom the threat of euthanasia until theiradopted family is found. More than 2,500animals every year find their humancompanions and begin their new lives in

homes around our community and SouthFlorida. Before a pet is approved foradoption, we go to great lengths to makesure he/she is healthy, vaccinated andspayed or neutered. In addition, counselingand guidance are provided to make surethe right pet is adopted into the righthome.

Staff and volunteers of the HumaneSociety of Greater Miami travel to schools, libraries, organizations and clubs to teachthe community about responsible petownership and to promote the

human/animal bond. Everyyear, through our educationalprogram, more than 6,000children and adults areencouraged to be kind toanimals and taught theseriousness of petoverpopulation.

Unconditional love andacceptance are two of themany rewards of owning a pet.It is well documented that

interaction with animals can significantlyimprove our physical and emotional health. The Humane Society of Greater Miami’s PetTherapy Program brings the unique andhealing human/animal bond to residentsand patients of healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, children’s hospitalsand senior citizen homes throughoutMiami. Put as simply as possible, pets makeus feel good!

Message from the Bone-afide ChairpeopleOn behalf of myself, my husband Milton, and our Co-Chairman and Humane-itarian, Bunny Bastian, wewelcome you with great pleasure to Pawpurrazzi2012! We’re delighted to be surrounded by our dearfriends and excited to celebrate our “Top Dogs andBest in Show”, The Batchelor Foundation: SandyBatchelor and Jon and Nancy Batchelor; ourHonorary Chairperson, Nora Bulnes, Co-ChairpeopleMarisa Cisneros-Rizzon and Marcos Rizzon, Ann andFrank Rubino, “Humane-itarian and Best of Breed”Penny and Roe Stamps, “Animal Ambassadors and

Your presence tonight makesit a truly memorable affair. Thank you all for your generosity and devotion.

With great pride and appreciation, we would like to announce our new Pawpurrazzi GoldenHall of Fame member: The Batchelor Foundation. Their support and generous contributionshave been invaluable to our success and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. Weare honored to be able call these great philanthropists our dear dear friends.

Personally, Milton and I have been involved in cat and dog rescues for many years. Therewards of nurturing, caring, and providing a loving home to abandoned animals areinnumerable and the love received in return is truly unconditional. The rewards are great- our friends often tell us that their pets are their “four-legged children”, and in addition, they don’t ask us for money and they certainly don’t talk back.

In the last couple of years, we have grown to know the staff and volunteers at the HumaneSociety of Greater Miami and have learned about their organized efforts to eradicate pethomelessness. Because we share a passion for helping animals in need, we decided toembrace this cause. The Humane Society of Greater Miami is the unified voice for animalsin our community.

On a daily basis, the organization takes in homeless dogs and cats, ensures that they arehealthy and ready for adoption, and, later, places them in loving homes with people whohave passed an adoption interview. No matter how long it takes, all pets are free from thethreat of euthanasia while waiting for their forever home. Their success rate is phenomenaland they truly have the means and training to make an adoption permanent. We’recontinuously amazed at what the organization does with great devotion and dedication, and very limited financial resources.

Please join us in a toast to the Humane Society of Greater Miami, the wonderful dogswho are here with us tonight, and those dogs and cats who are at home. These loving andloyal companions give us so much and ask for so little in return. They are true angels!

To all of you, thank you for being here tonight and helping the animals while they wait for theirpermanent, loving family, and for helping to improve the lives of all animals in our community.

We could not fulfill our mission without you. We salute you, enjoy!

Bone-afide Chairpeople

Pat and Milton Wallace

Who better than philanthropists Pat and Milton Wallace, lifetime supporters of animalrights, to be chairpeople of Pawpurrazzi? This amazing couple shows their love foranimals on a daily basis. All of their beautiful dogs, Retired Champion Sheltie, Hanna,Japanese Spitz, Chloe; and toy Pomeranian, “Jake” it Up Baby, were adopted, as are theirfive cats, Vici, Katy-Two, Suki, Sister, and Friend. Although they know, they don’t tell thedogs, that the cats really rule the roost!

Each of the Wallace pets walking the runway tonight has a story. Hanna, the Sheltie, haswon championships in every category. She is one “lucky dog”—when her showcompetition career was over and her owners didn’t want her anymore, she was adoptedby the Wallace family. Now she lives in the lap of luxury at Halcyon Park, the Wallacehome, showing her privileged status by sleeping in their bed, on her back, with all fourlegs in the air – a definite sign of comfort and security.

Chloe, a Japanese Spitz, was a puppy-mill dog used for breeding. By the tender age oftwo, she had already given birth to 23 puppies. At that time, she was no longer able toreproduce and her breeder was going to euthanize her. Thank goodness the Wallacefamily stepped in and made her part of the family. Now, Chloe also sleeps in bed with Patand Milton and shows her appreciation for being rescued from her hard life by dancingon her hind legs and lovingly interacting with human friends. She is a natural “peopleperson”. Just like her Mommy!

Page 14: Pawpurrazzi 2012 journal

13

The newest member of the family, “Jake” It Up Baby, also known as Jake, was a productof a puppy mill that was, thankfully, put out of business. “Twisting and shaking” like all littlepups, Pat and Milton knew just what to name their newest canine addition! Little Jake wasless than three months old and only 2.6 pounds when he ended up at the Humane Society.Pat’s sister, Rebecca, knowing Pat’s love for Pomeranians, and hearing her speak often ofwanting to adopt one, heard about this little bundle of joy who needed a home. Takingadvantage of an upcoming birthday of Pat’s, Rebecca knew she had the perfect birthdaygift to give! Jake has successfully found his place amongst his four-legged brothers andsisters, both cats and dogs!

Both Pat and Milton are successful business people, each a visionary in their own right.Pat’s resume is extensive and impressive, and covers a wide range of business, cultural, civic, and charitable organizations from banking to real estate development. For 12 yearsshe was the Chairman of Bankers Savings, a successful banking institution in Coral Gables.Currently Pat is Chairman of the Board of the Humane Society of Greater Miami, memberof the Executive Committee, and has served as Chairman of Pawpurrazzi for the last fouryears. In addition, Pat is a Director of the Jackson Memorial Foundation, a former two-term Chairman of the Foundation, and former founder and Chairman of the GoldenAngels. Also, Pat has a love for art and culture, which is reflected in her commitment toWolfsonian-FIU as a member of the Board of Directors. She is also a member of theTiffany Circle of the Red Cross and has received the American Red Cross Spectrum Award, amongst many other philanthropic awards.

Milton was Chairman of the Board of Renal CarePartners, Inc., a provider of kidney dialysisservices, which was recently sold. Presently, he is Vice-Chairman of the Board of PreferredCarePartners, Inc., a Medicare Advantage Plan. He was a practicing attorney for morethan 40 years, serving both as a City of Miami Judge and Assistant State Attorney Generalof the state of Florida. He has provided leadership to various community and culturalorganizations, serving as Chairman for more than 20 years of the Miami-Dade HousingFinance Authority, and currently serves as Chairman of the Miami-Dade AffordableHousing Foundation and Classical South Florida 89.7 FM. In addition, he serves as amember of the Board of Directors of two public companies: Catalyst PharmaceuticalPartners, Inc. and Imperial Industries, Inc.

As chairmen of Pawpurrazzi 2012, Pat and Milton have been involved in every aspect ofits planning. We couldn’t have done it without them and, on behalf of the animals and ushumans, we thank them for all their hard work and dedication. Their enthusiasm, creativityand unique style have made their mark on our event tonight—and we promise it will beone of the most fun parties of the year!

We salute Pat and Milton for all that they do in the community - especially for the animals!

Current parents of a black Labrador Retrievernamed Ella, and 14 stray and pedigree cats, Pennyand Roe Stamps have shared a lifelong love of twoand four legged critters ranging from “Chip” thechipmunk to “Ozzie Lane,” a rescued osprey. Theirpets reside at both of their Ocean Reef andCoconut Grove residences, and are lovingly caredfor by all members of their household.

Of all of the cats in the Stamps retinue, the mostoutstanding was a magnificent grey tabby namedGrayvik. An abandoned cat, left to fend for hisown, Grayvik was rescued from a highwayapproaching Ocean Reef. Grayvik adopted Pennyat the ORCAT shelter at the Ocean Reef Club inKey Largo in May of 1996. About a year later, heboldly awoke Penny and Roe in the wee hours ofan August morning to alert them to a fire whichhad begun to rage in the couple’s Key Largohome. The cat’s aptitude and cunning earned himthe highest marks with the Stamps because his

timeliness and urgency enabled Roe to rescue their daughter, Annie, from her smokeengulfed room before tragedy would strike. To honor him, Penny became involved withthe ORCAT Trap, Neuter and Release program at Ocean Reef, and the Stamps wouldeventually name the new animal center located there after him, “The Grayvik Animal CareCenter.” Grayvik’s spirit lives on through the many shelter animals crying for love and apermanent home and a chance to give something back to their owners.

In tonight’s walk, the Stamps will be including their grand-dog, Baxter, a lively Bostonterrier, as well as their marvelous retriever, Ella.

Penny and Roe have devoted the last 20 years to philanthropic causes. The StampsFamily Charitable Foundation is committed to education through its Stamps ScholarsProgram offering merit scholarships in over 12 universities and colleges nation wide.

On a local level, the Stamps are active and ardent supporters of the University of Miami,The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, The Red Cross, Barry University, CommunityPartnership for the Homeless and many other social services and charities throughout theregion. For several years, Alicia had been a donor of the ASPCA and the National Wildlife Federation, and, with the renewed commitment of Do Unto Others, she became active in the ZoologicalSociety of Florida and the Humane Society of Greater Miami. She recently stated that she“fell in love with the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center on her first visit”.

Tonight, Alicia has asked her niece, Tiffany Masdeu, to walk the runway with her dog, Daisy, along withfriend Nicole Gerdts and canine friend, Cody. Although twenty-four year old Tiffany has special needs, shehas never let that stop her. She participates in fashion shows, loves animals, and enjoys working withchildren. Daisy, her dog, is an unusual canine who has strong feline characteristics; cleaning herself, at timespurring, taking naps on top of the refrigerator, and even coughing up hairballs. Together, they personify thehuman-animal bond. Since rescuing Cody from an animal shelter when he was seven weeks old, Nicole andCody have been inseparable. Jeanette’s dream was certainly achieved, and more!

Jeanette devotes most of her time serving as a member of the Board of Directors atthe Humane Society of Greater Miami. attention span. She loves to watch television. She faithfully watches all sports with her daddy and movies withher mommy. Her favorite movie is Hotel for Dogs. She watches from beginning to end, and actually barks atthe television when the villains appear. Hugs, on the other hand, is happy to sleep through everything. We honor and thank Helene and Marc Kovens for all that they have done for needy animals. Today, the Kuhls open the doors 6 days a week to a 15,000 sq.ft. showroom, gallery, interior design workroom, and framing shop. With their talented team, they offer great advice and reliable service with superior customer care.

Every day Bailey goes to work with Sheila and Frank and greetsfamily, friends, customers, and everyone human or canine, with a wagging tail. Sandy Zankl Sandy Zankl is a long time friend of the Humane Society of Greater Miami. A nativeMiamian, she grew up with her three sisters in a home near the Parrot Jungle in SouthMiami. A day never went by when they didn’t see parrots, peacocks, foxes or even aFlorida panther crossing their yard.

After graduating from the University of South Florida with a degree in business, shereturned home to work in the family business, Miami Rivet Company, founded by herfather. In 1986, the business was sold and a new family business was formed, BezanProperties.

charities to which Sandy donates her time and resources, her favorites are the Humane Society of GreaterMiami, The Cat Network, Inc., and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

Sandy’s devotion to animals began fifteen years ago when she and one of her sisters found four blackkittens under a bush. Many a rescued cat, and occasionally a rescued dog, have passed through her homeon their way to a new and forever family. Those that could not be placed have stayed and lived happilyever after with her.

We are forever grateful that Sandy is so generous and compassionate to the homeless and abandonedanimals of our community. Tonight, Sandy walks the runway with her childhood family friends’ son, Spencer, and daughter, Jane, and their Labradoodle, Barney.

“I would like to dedicate this program to LaurieHoffman, Director of Communication and SpecialEvents at the Humane Society of Greater Miami. Icould not have done this event without her. Lauriehas a strong love for the animals in our shelter andher devotion to them is absolute. Laurie’scommitment to Pawpurrazzi is undeniable; she putsher heart and soul into this event. Laurieaccomplishes everything with her own uniqueelegance and style. Nothing is too hard for her. Shegets everything done, excellently. Laurie spent manyevenings on the phone with me until two o’clock inthe morning, working on all the details that makePawpurrazzi the one-of-a-kind event that it is. In

addition to that, she oversees every aspect of the event just to make sure thateverything runs smoothly and is perfect. Just like her. I am so very very grateful to herand I love every single moment”.Fondly,

A Special Thank YouWe would like to draw attention to some “unsung heroes” of this event, people whoremain under the radar and want no accolades or thanks, but have worked endlesslyto make this event so special. We are referring to Donna Tallon, Executive Director,Dani Kandera, Andrea Rodriguez, Ricki Diamond, Kim Maxwell, Lisa DePriest, and theentire staff at the Humane Society of Greater Miami whose commitment goes farbeyond the call of duty. They go the extra mile, pushing the proverbial envelope as faras it can go. Most importantly, they dealt with our constant requests—okay, maybesome would call them demands-- and phone calls. And, anyone who has worked withus, knows that we are perfectionists and tough taskmasters.

We warmly thank them for all their hard work in making Pawpurrazzi an event youwill be talking about for years to come. We could not have done this without them.
