KARNAL, SEPT 10 ( ): Seeing little drop in the intensity of farmers' protest in front of Karnal District Secretariat, the administration has once again called the farmers' leaders of the United Front for talks. Samyukta Kisan Morcha representative Gurnam Singh Chadhuni has gone to the press conference hall of the district secretariat for talks with the administration. However, it is yet not known how the talks are progressing. The farmers' leaders had earlier made it clear to the administration to not to call for talks till a case is registered against former Karnal SDM Ayush Sinha and his suspension orders are issued. However, the fact that the farmers are being called for talks by the government is pointing to the fact that the government wants to break the impasse. At the moment, what comes out in the conversation will come to light only after the meeting. All eyes are on the ongoing talks with the farmers' representatives and administrative officials. It is noteworthy that the farmers' movement continued for the fourth day today. The farmers had started agitation in front of the district secretariat of Karnal by forming a firm front regarding 3 demands. The spread of the movement is increasing day by day.

The right to raise voice and hold protest has been given to thecommon man in democracy. This only this strengthens theroots of democracy.

Karta Ram Kashyap, former DSP and statepresident of LoktantrikSuraksha Party (LSP),said these words duringa program in Indri. Hesaid that the BJP govern-ment in the state is throt-tling democracy. Lathisare being hurled at thefarmers who are raisingtheir voice. This is not ademocracy but a “lathisystem,” he said.

A sort of dictator-ship is being resorted to by the government in the country andthe state. The farmers are demonstrating for their rights. Butat the behest of the government, sticks have been thrown atthem and an attempt has been made to suppress the voice bybrandishing guns by the police. For a long time, farmers arefighting for their rights and are sitting in dharna.

He said that the farmers say that these three agriculturallaws are not in their interest. When the farmers do not needthese agricultural laws and they are demanding these shouldbe scrapped, then the government should accept the demandsof the farmers.

Terrorism will increase underAfghanistan's new Taliban govt

With the Talibanforming the inter-im "Islamic Emi-

rate of Afghanistan," andappointing hardliners in itsnew government, expertshave warned that risks ofterrorism are set to in-crease in the war-torncountry.

"For the foreseeablefuture, Afghanistan will beled by senior Taliban lead-ers who include in manycases the worst of theworst," Michael Kugel-man, deputy director of theAsia Program at the Wil-son Center, told CNBC onWednesday.

Kugelman pointedspecifically to members ofthe Haqqani network, known as the most brutalfaction of the Taliban.

"I think you're lookingat a situation where nomatter what type of gov-ernment we're going tohave in Afghanistan, ter-rorism risks were going toincrease just because youhave the Taliban in con-trol," Kugelman said, adding "the Taliban is notknown for trying to denyspace to its partners in thecountry, with the exceptionof ISIS-K, which is theirrival." "You're going tohave several members ofthe Haqqani network --which has been implicatedin some of the most masscasualty horrific terroristattacks in Afghanistan overthe years -- and several ofthese leaders are going tobe occupying these topspots, including the interi-

or ministry, and clearlythat is a major cause forconcern, no matter howyou slice it," he added. OnTuesday, the Talibanformed the interim "Islam-ic Emirate", appointinghardliners in its new gov-ernment who oversaw the

20-year fight against theUS-led military coalition. The cabinet members con-sist of many Taliban fig-ures that are consideredhardliners. The list an-nounced by chiefspokesman ZabihullahMujahid was dominated by

members of the group's oldguard, with no women in-cluded. In what is seen as acontroversial appointment,Sirajuddin Haqqani has be-come Afghanistan's interi-or minister, in charge ofpolice and security.Haqqani is the leader of

the Haqqani network, which is known to havelinks to al-Qaeda. He is onthe FBI's most-wanted listand is a designated globalterrorist. The Taliban's pro-vision of a safe haven toal-Qaeda in the 1990s iswhat led the US to invade

Office air quality may affectemployees' productivity

According to a new research, the air quality within an of-fice can have significant im-

pacts on employees' cognitive func-tion, including response times andability to focus, and it may also af-fect their productivity.

The findings of the study werepublished online in the journal 'En-vironmental Research Letters'. Theone-year study, led by Harvard T.H.Chan School of Public Health, in-cluded participants in offices acrosssix countries working in a variety offields, including engineering, realestate investment, architecture, andtechnology.

The study found that increasedconcentrations of fine particulatematter (PM2.5) and lower ventila-tion rates (measured using carbon

dioxide (CO2) levels as a proxy)were associated with slower re-sponse times and reduced accuracyon a series of cognitive tests.

The researchers noted that theyobserved impaired cognitive func-tion at concentrations of PM2.5 andCO2 that are common within indoorenvironments.

"Our study adds to the emerg-ing evidence that air pollution hasan impact on our brain. The findingsshow that increases in PM2.5 levelswere associated with acute reduc-tions in cognitive function. It's thefirst time we've seen these short-term effects among younger adults,"said Jose Guillermo Cedeno Lau-rent, a research fellow in the De-partment of Environmental Healthand lead author of the study.

Study finds whether passion, intimacy in relationshipswere affected by COVID-19 lockdownsThe findings of a new

study on dating andmarried couples in In-

dia who were surveyed beforeand after India's COVID-19lockdown, suggested that re-lationship satisfaction, love, intimacy, and passion havesignificantly lowered postlockdown.

The study, which waspublished in Family Rela-tions, found that commitmentamong those who were datingremained unaffected. Forthose who were dating, watching movies together andrevisiting old memories wereactivities associated withlove. For married couples, doing household chores, cooking, and watchingmovies together were associ-ated with love.

The study included 100participants (65 dating and 35married) who were surveyedin two waves, first in Janu-ary-March and then in Mayafter the lockdown.

"Love in relationships hasbeen collateral damage toCOVID-19. How couplesspent time with each other isthe key to maintain love.

Watching movies together, reminiscing positive experi-ences, and sharing houseworkled to better connectedness,"said co-author Kanika K.Ahuja, PhD, of Lady ShriRam College for Women, inIndia. She further said,"While it is widely believedthat the way through a man's

heart is through his stomach, our results suggest that a sim-ilar route exists for women aswell, provided men want totake that route! Norms thatdefine a relationship, particu-larly with regard to participa-tion in domestic work by menmust be revisited to adjust tothe new normal."

Mahatma Gandhi’s India, which “live[d] in [its]villages”, will cease to be a reality quite soon.New data from the Census office have pro-

jected that by 2036, 18 Indian states and Union territo-ries will have at least 50 per cent of their populationsresiding in urban areas. These are not isolated figures:the data have been borne out by other research initia-tives. In 2018, a study by the United Nations’s Depart-ment of Economic and Social Affairs said that by 2050,India would have around 416 million urban dwellers.Urbanization and the corresponding emptying out ofrural settings are turning out to be a global phenomena.China, for instance, is increasingly becoming a nationof town and city dwellers — by 2016, more than 55 percent of its population was already living in urban areas.

Urbanization is interpreted as a sign of progress. But it merits closer scrutiny. In India, hyper-urbaniza-tion would bring with it unique, and serious, chal-lenges. This year marked six years since the BharatiyaJanata Party’s flagship Smart Cities Mission waslaunched. Its aims were to create 100 smart cities, im-prove the quality of life for urban residents, and steerIndia’s rapid urban development with the help of tech-nology and data-driven solutions. And, yet, latest dataindicate serious failures in making these cities liveable, economically vibrant and environmentally sustainable. This myopia in policy is likely to lead to the intensifi-cation of existing environmental and infrastructuralchallenges with rural populations moving to urban ar-eas in search of jobs and livelihood. Health, sanitation, housing, employment, water supply and education aresome of the sectors that would come under unprece-dented pressure. Some of these challenges are visiblealready — Indore was declared the ‘best’ smart city, but the district witnessed the highest number of Coviddeaths in Madhya Pradesh during the second wave.Worse, most large Indian cities, including metropolis-es, do not have climate resilience plans in place, eventhough India has been ranked the seventh most cli-mate-vulnerable country by the Climate Risk Index2021. Finding solutions to these problems will requireurgent and targeted planning by governments and citydevelopers. For instance, is there a case to be made fora State-aided redistribution of populations to satellitetowns that have been provided better infrastructure?Such a model would reduce the burden on major citiesand, crucially, aid uniform development.

BASSETERRE : The Jamaica Tallawahs made it two wins in two as they defeated the Saint Lucia Kings by 55 runs at Warner Park, St Kitts, on Friday in the 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL).This win means the Tallawahs move into a qualifying spot for the knockout games next week but all six teams still have a mathematical chance to reach the latter stages. The Kings remain in third place in the table with all teams having two more group matches left to play. The Tallawahs got off to a lightning start thanks to another brutal innings from Kennar Lewis who smashed 56 from just 24 balls. Lewis was well supported by Shamarh Brooks as the Tallawahs reached 78/1 off their Power Play overs. While wickets fell throughout the Tallawahs innings they managed to maintain a fast scoring rate throughout with contributions from the middle order. It was Imad Wasim who pushed the Tallawahs past 200 with 10-ball innings worth 27 runs including three consecutive sixes off the 20th over. The Kings chase started just as quickly with Andre Fletcher and Mark Deyal both making quickfire scores as they reached 79/1 off their first six overs. Roston Chase and Deyal put on 66 runs in just 32 balls but both fell in the space of two balls to Carlos Brathwaite to bring the Tallawahs back into the match.
