Applications
AUMA part-turn gearboxes are used wherever manual
operation of part-turn valves is required, e.g. butterfly
valves or ball valves.
GHE range gearboxes are characterised by a compact,
space-saving design and are, therefore, perfectly suited to
all applications where devices must be housed within small
areas. This is a common requirement in industrial applica-
tions and above all on ships.
To comply with the high requirements for military appli-
cations, standards regarding defence equipment (German
VG) and design specifications (German BV) were taken into
account. This applies, for example, to shock or vibration
resistance. The devices with housings made of bronze are
qualified for use on naval surface vessels and submarines.
The housings for gearboxes used for conventional indus-
trial applications are made of spheroidal cast iron.

20 This brochure will provide both the beginner and the
expert with an overview of the functions and applications
of AUMA GHE part-turn gearboxes.
It can be used as the basis to determine whether a
device is suitable for the chosen application. For detailed
product selection refer to the separate data sheets and
dimension sheets. On request, AUMA engineers within
field service and within our subsidiaries can help you find
the correct device for the application.
Since 1990, AUMA offers electric actuators having been
especially developed to fulfill the requirements of the ship-
building industry. Due to their compact design and their
reliable operation as well as the simple power supply,
these actuators have proven feasible alternatives to the
conventional hydraulic actuators used so far. GHE part-turn
gearboxes are a useful supplement for the manually oper-
ated butterfly and ball valves.
The robust design principle and the high end stop
strength ensure long gearbox lifetime at low maintenance
requirements.
The latest detailed information on the GHE part-turn
gearboxes can be found on the Internet under
www.auma.com. All documents including dimensional
drawings and final inspection records for supplied gear-
boxes are available on the Internet in digital form.

[1] Industrial version
In this version, the housing is made of spheroidal cast iron GJS-500-7.A handwheel made of polyamide is used as the operating element.
As long as naval vessels are not destined for use in military opera-tions, e.g. supply vessels, this version of gearbox may be used. Further tothis, they can be used for all civil applications and are not limited to theshipbuilding industry.
[2] Marine version
The housing is made of saltwater-proof antimagnetic bronze (RG7), asspecifically required for submarines to avoid position finding as much aspossible. Apart from the input shaft, the naval version and the commer-cial version are of identical design.
The operating elements are defined in the military Standard VG 85081(operating elements for fittings). The following operating elements, as de-scribed in the standard, can be fitted and fixed onto the splines of theinput shaft:■ Crank handle with conical grip, VG 85087 [2a]■ Crank handle with cylindrical grip, VG 85086 [2b]■ Handwheel with five edge ring, VG 85089 1 [2c]■ Handwheel with five-ripple ring, VG 85088 [2d]

Position indicatorThe current valve position can be detected
by means of an engraved line for the marineversion and by means of an arrow for the com-mercial version. If the line or the arrow is par-allel to the pipework, the valve is open. In turn,if the position of the line or arrow is perpendic-ular, the valve is closed.
Valve attachmentThe valve attachment is according to
EN ISO 5211.
End stopsThe internal end stops limit the swing angle.
The significant advantage of the AUMA designis that only the comparatively low input torqueacts on the end stops, not the high outputtorque. Thereby a high level of safety againstdamage due to overload is assured (refer alsoto page 9).
[3]
CouplingThe separate coupling enables easier mount-
ing of the gearbox to the valve. On request, the coupling is supplied with a suitable hole. The coupling with bore is placed on the valveshaft and secured against axial movement. Then, the gearbox is fitted onto the valveflange (refer also to page 11).
[5]
Ellipto-centric gearingThe patented ellipto-centric gearing with a
reduction ratio of 80:1 provides the basis for acompact design.

Service conditions
Enclosure protectionIP 67
AUMA devices conform to enclosure protection IP 67
according to EN 60 529. IP 67 means protection against
immersion up to max. 1 m head of water for max. 30 min-
utes.
IP 68On request, AUMA devices are available with improved
enclosure protection IP 68 according to EN 60 529. IP 68
means protection against submersion up to 6 m head of
water for max. 72 hours. During submersion up to 10 opera-
tions are permissible.
Ambient temperaturesGHE gearboxes are approved for use within a temperature
range of –25 °C to +80 °C.
When designing the gearboxes, the high requirements for
military applications were taken into consideration right from
the start. These demands are specified in special military stan-
dards. Gearboxes have to operate reliably and for a long time
under all conditions stipulated in those standards without
requiring major maintenance work. The gearboxes design has
been proven in complex type tests and over many years of
application. Furthermore, no lubricant change is required.
Corrosion protection/ColourVersion with spheroidal cast iron housing
The gearboxes are coated with the high quality KN corro-
sion protection This is suitable for outdoor installation and
for slightly aggressive atmospheres with a low level of
pollution.
The standard colour of the finish coating is silver-grey (sim-
ilar to RAL 7037). Other colours are possible on request.
Version with bronze housing
The bronze (RG7) used is saltwater-proof. Due to the fact
that the material withstands salted atmosphere, no further
painting is applied.
Shock resistance and Vibration resistance –Marine Version
For military applications, extreme mechanical strain has to
be considered. These demands are specified in military stan-
dards. For GHE gearboxes, the BV 0340 (shock resistance)
and the BV 0440 (vibration resistance) are of particular
importance. According to these regulations, gearboxes must
resist acceleration up to 180 g.
In type tests, the GHE gearboxes have proven they fulfill
the requirements of these standards.

Functions
The basic function of the GHE part-turn gearbox is
described as follows: To reduce the input torque required at
the valve by means of a reduction ratio. Further marginal
conditions must be observed, e.g. static self-locking is often
required.
It is expected that the gearbox will function over a long
period of time and in all climatic conditions. Furthermore, the
installation should be easy and the maintenance requirements
low. The high demands on availability and ease of mainte-
nance can only be met by a sophisticated design. The GHE
gearbox range is an excellent example for such features.
Limitation of the swing angleIn general the end stops limit the swing angle within the
valve. However, there are valves that do not have any inter-
nal end stops, e.g. ball valves.
If such a valve is operated manually, it can be positioned
precisely in the end position by approaching the end stops of
the GHE gearbox. This is particularly important if the position
indication at the valve or the gearbox are not clearly visible.
Swing angle ranges
Most part-turn valves require a 90° movement for covering
the travel from OPEN to CLOSED. In the factory the swing
angle is generally set and fixed at 90°. Generally, swing
angles are possible between 82° and 98°. Swing angles other
than 90° must be mentioned on the purchase order.
Multi-turn operation is possible as an option if no end
stops are required. Multi-turn operation is required, if the
gearbox is mounted onto a valve requiring several turns of
the valve shaft to complete one valve stroke. In such cases,
you are kindly requested to contact the factory for sizing the
gearbox.
| 9
Simple and precise setting of the endpositionsSetting one single end position
The swing angle of the gearbox is set in the factory to the
swing angle required on site, i.e. the swing angle between
valve position OPEN and CLOSED may not be changed. Dur-
ing commissioning, only one end stop has to be set; the
other end stop will automatically be set via the preset swing
angle. Only a screwdriver is needed to perform the setting.
High resistance to fractureDue to the special AUMA design, the gearboxes have a
high end stop strength, which is several times the maximum
input torque.
End stop design at the example of the marine version
[1] End stop OPEN (green)
[2] End stop CLOSED (red)[3] Travelling nut (blue)The travelling nut moves back and forth on a thread between the two endstops. Only the comparatively low input torque acts on the end stops, notthe high output torque. The forces are contained in the end stop and thestem, the housing is not affected.

[3]
AUMA actuators and gearboxes are not exclusively used on navel vesselsbut also on commercial ships, like the cruise ship “Olympic Voyager”..
… or the “Rising Sun”, one of the largest private yachts in the world.
Protection against unauthorised/unintentionaloperationIndustrial version
The position of freely accessible valves may not be
changed by unauthorised personnel.
This can be prevented by securing the gearbix handwheel
by means of a locking device.
Locking device
Marine version
In general, gearboxes on naval vessels are not freely acces-
sible. However, in spite of the usually cramped confines, it
may be necessary to prevent any unauthorised modification
of the valve position. For such requirements, the gearbox may
be equipped with a handwheel locking device.
Handwheel locking device.

Functions
Protection against accidental alteration of thevalve position
Gravity, vibration or forces acting upon the medium within
a pipeline may lead to accidental changes in the valve posi-
tion. This has to be prevented.
Due to their design, GHE gearboxes counteract torques
acting upon the output side with a load, to ensure that the
valve position is not modified at standstill. This feature is
called self-locking.
| 11
Valve attachment
The gearbox is mounted to the valve using a mounting
flange standardised according to EN ISO 5211.
The torque is transmitted to the valve shaft via a separate
coupling. In the basic version, the coupling is unbored; it may
also be provided with the bores shown below. In case of spe-
cial valve designs with a low valve stem or if an intermediate
flange is required between gearbox and valve, the coupling
might be too short. For such cases, the coupling is also avail-
able in an extended version.
[1] [2] [3]
If the coupling is bored, it is supplied with agrub screw to fasten the coupling to the valveshaft.
[1] Bore with keyways
The bore according to EN ISO 5211 can besupplied with one, two, three or four keyways. The keyways conform to DIN 6885 P1. Forkeyways with other dimensions please contactAUMA.

Quality is not just a matter of trust
Actuators must be reliable and dependable. They deter-
mine the steps of accurately defined work processes.
Reliability does not begin during commissioning. It begins
with a well thought out design and careful selection of mate-
rials. This continues with conscientious production using
highly sophisticated machinery in clearly controlled and super-
vised steps, while keeping in mind the environment.
The importance of environmentally sound production is
reflected in our certifications according to ISO 9001 and ISO
14001. At AUMA, quality management is not considered as a
single and static matter but is monitored on a daily basis.
Numerous customer and independent audits confirm these
high standards.
