(Feb. 7, 2016) – Eight days shy of his 21st birthday, Swe- den’s Jesper Svensson, the 2015 Professional Bowlers Association Rookie of the Year, became the youngest player to win the FireLake PBA Tournament of Cham- pions Sunday at FireLake Arena. Svensson, a 6-foot-3, 158-pound left-handed two-hander, defeated top qualifier Mitch Beasley of Clarksville, Tenn., 226-177, to win his third career PBA Tour title, his first major and a $50,000 first prize. The previous youngest winner of the TOC was PBA Hall of Famer Marshall Holman who won the event in 1976 at the age of 21 years, 207 days. Another PBA Hall of Famer, Mike Aulby, is the youngest player ever to win a PBA major title, winning the 1979 PBA National Championship at the age of 19 years, 83 days. Svensson won the title convincingly, striking on five of his first six shots to build a 30-pin lead while Beasley, making his first Sweden’s Svensson Wins FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions PBA’s 2015 Rookie of the Year becomes youngest player to win TOC at age 20 television appearance, struggled to figure out the tricky lane condition on the left lane. “I was pretty comfort- able from the start, but then I opened in the second frame (against Daugherty),” Svensson said. “I was a bit nervous. It would be weird if you weren’t when you’re bowling on TV. But I made the right adjustments and I was fine.” Setting the record as the youngest TOC champion was never on his mind. “That’s a bonus,” Svens- son said. “I try not to think about how young I am. I just try to compete against the best in the world. Ev- erything has gone pretty quick for me. I just came out here (on Tour in the United States) to get expe- rience. I probably haven’t even realized what I’ve done so far. “Winning a major is one of the biggest achievements you can have in bowling, so I’m pretty much out of words.” Beasley said he knew he was in trouble early because the power players on the right side of the lane moved the oil to such an extent he couldn’t figure out where to throw the ball. “When you throw your best shot and miss the head pin, that’s not good,” the re- tired 20-year U.S. Air Force veteran said. “The guys in front of me really destroyed the left lane. You try to fig- ure it out, but if I missed left, the ball went right and if I missed right, the ball hooked too much. And then you’re out of time.” Svensson advanced to the title match by defeat- ing Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., 245-206, breaking open a tie match with a string of seven strikes after leaving and failing to convert a 4-6-7 split in the second frame. In the second match, Daugherty ended three-time reigning PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte’s bid for a third consecutive TOC title, 220-169. Belmonte contributed to his own de- feat, missing a 10 pin in the first frame, a 2-8 spare at- tempt in the sixth and then failing to convert a 2-4-8- 10 split in the ninth frame. In the opening match, Daugherty finished with seven consecutive strikes to overcome a pair of missed 3-10 spare conversions earlier in the game and rally from a 35-pin deficit to eliminate EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., 231-221. PBA’s “Super Febru- ary” schedule continues next week with the United States Bowling Congress Masters at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis. SHAWNEE, Okla. -- PBA50 Tour standout Pete Couture of Cocoa, Fla., former South Region Manager Harry O’Neale of Ravenel, S.C., and former PBA Tour announcer Den-ny Schreiner of Akron, Ohio, were inducted into the Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame Monday during ceremonies at the Grand Casino Hotel Resort.

Couture was elected in the PBA50 Performance category based on his exceptional record for a minimum of 10 years as a “senior” competitor. On the heels of a 24-year career as a PBA Tour competitor, when he won five standard PBA titles, Couture began his PBA50 career in 1995 when he earned PBA50 Rookie of the Year honors. He won the first of nine PBA50 Tour titles in Reno in 1996, and captured a pair of USBC Senior Masters titles in 1998 (when he was selected as PBA50 Player of the Year) and 2002.

“If it wasn’t for the senior (PBA50) tour I wouldn’t be here,” said Couture. “The se-nior tour was a second chance and an opportunity to re-invent myself.

“Bowling on the senior tour was like being with family,” he added. “Some of my greatest memories came from bowling on the Senior Tour. I think everyone who bowls for a living dreams of getting in the hall of fame because there’s no higher honor.”

O’Neale built the PBA South Region tournament program into the organization’s most successful proving ground for aspiring young players over a span of 31 years before his retirement in 2011. A one-time PBA Tour competitor, O’Neale assumed a regional program with fewer than 200 members and built it into a membership of more than 900 members, frequently traveling thousands of miles while conducting more than 40 week-end tournaments a year.

“In all the years I was with PBA I had so many great people around me to make it work and I couldn’t have done it without them,” O’Neale said. “It’s been a long way but a lot of fun. Over the years I gave a way a lot of awards but didn’t get that many myself, so this is a great honor for me.

“I’m very proud of the growth we had in the (PBA’s) south region,” O’Neale added. “I wanted the bowlers in our part of the country to be proud of our region and I knew if they were they would keep coming back and bowl in our tournaments.”

Schreiner, who served as the ESPN television voice of the PBA between 1986 and 1995, also was a skilled bowler who joined the PBA media staff as the PBA Tour Broad-cast Director shortly after his graduation from the University of Akron. As PBA’s play-by-play announcer on ESPN, he quickly became popular for his ability to apply his knowledge as a bowler to the telecasts, working in harmony with fellow PBA Hall of Famer Mike Durbin as his color analyst.

“I grabbed the brass ring when I got the PBA (announcing) job and never let go,” Schreiner said. “To be involved with all the great people who built and worked with PBA over the years, you can’t explain in your wildest dreams what it means to be standing up here.”

Getting tired of reading about all those 900 series?

I know. Yawn.

Two more bowlers joined the not-so-exclusive club in January, making it 29 times this has happened, according to the United States Bowling Congress. And the list doesn’t include Glenn Allison, who would have been the first but whose 300-300-300 was nixed because of so-called non-complying lane conditions. That Allison never got USBC sanc-tioning remains controversial to this day – and his feat happened back in 1982 in Orange County.

Speaking of controversy, there is one bowler on the 900 list who reportedly blasted two 300-300-300 series and he did it within four weeks of each other.

That player is Robert Mushtare of Carthage, N.Y., and he set his mark when he was a mere 17 years old – both times coming at Pine Plains Bowling Center in Fort Drum, N.Y.

Bowlers Journal International recognized Mushtare’s feat in its February issue with one innocuous paragraph under its “10 Years Ago” section.

The magazine put it this way: “A 17-year-old New York bowler, Robert Mushtare, reportedly rolls two 900 series within four weeks of each other – both in ‘pre-bowling’ situations.”

Bowlers Journal took the high road in leaving out the controversy about Mushtare’s two gems. But the skepticism hasn’t gone away.

The question remains: Should there still be any doubt he did it?

In a perfect world, it would be nice if Mushtare was honored – twice – for his strik-ingly unbelievable feat and then the bowling world could move on to other matters. But it’s not so simple. The book appears to be closing on the Mushtare controversy – but there are still questions about whether the final chapter has been written on this story.

And this is why:

First, Mushtare rolled both his supposed masterpieces not with his regular league but during a “pre-bowling” session. Under this format, there sometimes aren’t many wit-nesses to a player’s potential record-setting performance.

Second, several prominent bowlers have expressed skepticism that the two 900s really took place, which reportedly occurred on Dec. 3, 2005, and Feb. 19, 2006. Interestingly, Allison has been listed as among the skeptical.

There is an online poll that is still asking people if they feel Mushtare’s double 900 is legitimate or bogus.

I cast my ballot and was frankly surprised at the results of 3,220 votes.

Ninety-two percent of the voters said they were non-believers. I voted that Mushtare’s efforts were genuine.

Am I naive?

A Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune story in 2006 cast doubt about the legitimacy of Mushtare’s twin series.

Here are some excerpts from that story by Bill Herald:

“Mushtare claims to use Storm bowling balls exclusively, so why hasn’t there been a press release or an ad trumpeting the use of Storm products? . . . .

“Dave Symes, vice president of Storm marketing, replied to this writer, saying: “Due to the circumstances surrounding this achievement, we felt it might be best to remain neutral on this story.

“Neutral? Or, perhaps, ashamed?”

Herald went on:

“When you certify something, it should mean that you have conclusive proof that somebody actually did it.

“USBC claims to have found no evidence of cheating or wrongdoing, but on the other hand, there doesn’t appear to be sufficient proof that the 900s actually occurred. Just be-cause USBC found no violations doesn’t constitute proof.

“If USBC found no evidence of misconduct, it’s much more likely that they didn’t look extensively or hard enough.”

In the same story, a top USBC official was reported to have said that “over 99 percent of the people (at bowling headquarters) don’t believe it. But our hands are tied. We deter-mined that he followed the rules.”

Herald added: “I beg to differ. USBC hasn’t produced proof that Robert followed the rules – only that USBC could find no evidence that any rules were broken. And there’s a big difference.

“There is no other sport that accepts all-time record scores (or times or distances) into its record book absent total and conclusive proof that the accomplishment took place.

“The worst aspect may be a cover-up of sorts. Nearly everything regarding the US-BC’s investigation is confidential.”

Mushtare, for his part, is insistent that everything was legitimate about his pair of 900s and is indignant that there are disbelievers out there.

“I’m just another kid that works hard to try and achieve certain goals,” said Mushtare after bowling his 900s.

What is definitely clear is that Mushtare is an elite bowler. He racked up a sanctioned 850 in May 2014 with scores of 288, 295 and 267. Four years earlier, he smoked an 857. With those kind of lofty numbers, one can easily believe the 900s are legit.

But not everyone does.

SCOTT LaRIVIERE and SCOTT HATMAKER Citrus Belt Senior Doubles Champions

by Frank WeilerCABAZON — Scott LaRiviere and Scott Hatmaker

have been doubles partners in many tournaments for years. They are long time league partners and periodically com-pete in PBA Regional Tournaments together. They have won several doubles tournaments together including a WCST (West Coast Senior Tour) doubles title.

Now they are CITRUS BELT Senior Doubles Champi-ons. They recently won this season’s senior doubles title at Canyon Lanes. Their winning scores were:

Hatmaker 235 - 232 - 214 = 681LaRiviere 287 - 258 - 203 = 748 ---- 1429

LaRivière used a Roto Grip Hyper Cell while Hatmaker used a Storm Crux to win. Both balls were drilled by DAR-RON PETERS of Rollin’ Rock Pro Shop. Our Champions are grateful to Peters for his drilling expertise and inviting them to bowl on his team at the tournament.

Hatmaker was happy to have his 86 year old father and wife CARITA present for the tournament. It was especially gratifying to have his loved ones present as he performed like a champion. Hatmaker’s dad was instrumental in get-ting Scott started as a bowler and has always been there for him. They are very close and this tournament gave them an opportunity to share a championship.

It was a great tournament and everyone had praise for our host NORRIS RUNNELS, Canyon Lanes General Manager, for his outstanding job. My thanks go to the BOWLING NEWS for supporting California bowlers.

Jamie Beeler has developed a reputation as the “tough-est bowler around” and there’s a reason he has earned that distinction.

Two years ago, Jamie survived three games of league bowling at AMF Woodlake Lanes in Woodland Hills amid excruciating pain from his pulsating kidney stones.

Jamie kept popping Advil to help him continue bowl-ing before his wife Karen whisked him to VA West Los Angeles Medical Center for treatment on the stones.

“It was no fun watching him throw up and being white as a ghost,” said Karen, who’s been married to Jamie for 35 years.

And she added: “Nothing keeps him from his bowling. Nothing.”

The fact is there are other Jamie Beeler-like bowlers who refuse to allow injuries to keep them from stepping out on the lanes.

Here’s another player with over-the-top dedication to the game: Karen Beeler.

Yes, that’s Jamie’s wife, who possesses the same can’t-be-deterred-from-the-game principles as her husband. They currently bowl on the same team in the “Guys and Dolls” fall league Tuesday nights at Winnetka Bowl.

“We’re like a disabled couple,” says Jamie with a laugh. “Last week in our first game, I tried to pull her out because she could barely get out of her chair.”

No luck. Karen wasn’t going anywhere – other than to the foul line.“Nothing is going to keep me from bowling,” Karen

says. “I love it.”It should be mentioned that Karen suffers from a va-

riety of injuries that cause considerable pain. The most pronounced injuries are a torn meniscus in her left knee and a sciatica condition that forces her into an unorthodox delivery.

Karen positions herself at the line, takes aim and then heaves the ball down the lane. She is uncannily accurate with that approach.

“I think sliding is overrated,” Karen says. “This way, it keeps me focused.”

Also helpful is Tramadol, a pain medication that Karen takes during her bowling and keeps her going for the 2½ hours of her league.

Said Jamie: “Let’s put it this way. That woman is more stubborn than I am.”There’s no doubt that the team of Jamie and Karen has plenty of chemistry and magic.

The Rollin’ Thunder foursome of Jamie, Karen, Robert Uzan and Jean Uzan won the first portion of its three-stanza league in a runaway. The team also is the loudest and most enthusiastic of all the “Guys and Dolls” teams.

Karen, averaging 136, popped a 191 in one of her games. Jamie, the anchor on the team who averages 174, has smoked a 245.

Karen says bowling with Jamie motivates her and makes her aim for higher scores. “When I bowl a 191, I want to do better. I want to keep up with him,’ says Karen,

gesturing toward her husband. “He’s my inspiration.”No doubt, the feeling is mutual.

Despite being beset by numerous injuries, Karen Beeler cranked up a 191 game this season.

ITS 75TH YEAR IN LAS VEGAS THIS JUNE 27-30by Connie Marchione

was the most consistent bowler. He was one of only six of our competitors (just 10% of the field) to have no games below 200. Everyone of those six bowlers finished in the Top 10. Our winner was also the bowler with the most games over 240. Seven of his eight games were 243 or higher. His high was a 260 and low a 213. Doolan also showed he could finish with his last five games being 258, 256, 243, 247 and 260. He averaged 246 for the tournament but even higher for the last five games (253). That’s finishing strong. Second place finisher Bobby Campagnale registered four games over 240 and only one below par (200) at 195. He finished with games of 195, 217 and 227. Bobby’s so so finish cost him the title. After five games he had a 54 pin lead over Doolan (1,278 to 1,224) but our Champion outscored Bobby 750 to 639 down the stretch to take the title by 57 pins.

The Tourney TOP FIVE were: + Average Cash 1. James Doolan 374 (246) $ 1,200 2. Bobby Campagnale 317 (239) $ 900 3. Steve Smith 304 (238) $ 675 4. Vernon Adams 293 (236) $ 500 5. Dean Townsend 292 (236) $ 400The field was loaded with SoCAL’s best. In addition to the TOP FIVE finishers the

field of sixty-five included such “NAMES” as Deeron Booker (“Mr. Smoothie”), Sean Cochran, Kevin Gagnon, Bobby Hornacek, Jeff Lewen, Alan Mojado, Mason Sherman, Johnny Valentine, Eddie VanDaniker and Justin Ziegler.

There were six women in the field and all bowled well. The top female performer was LILY ROBLES with a seventh place finish, good for $250. She beat 58 guys!

Lily ended the day at a plus 278 (234 average). She had four games over 240 and only two below par (195 and 194). She started strong with a 286 and finished with 268, 218 and 245. DAMN IMPRESSIVE. I was told (unverified) she has bowled for the Mexican National Team.

Congratulations MICHAEL DURAN (Tournament Director) and NORRIS RUNNELS (General Manager) for a great tournament and great venue. By guaranteeing big checks, fair lane conditions and an impartial lane rotation schedule they succeeded in conducting a great tournament. I can’t wait for their next tournament, in a few months.

Oak Tree Lanes Saturday Feb 13 New Members WelcomeQualify 1:00-2:30-4:00 & 6:00 PM Finals 8:00 PM

SAN DIMAS — The ABTA enjoyed its return to Chaparral, 6 new members and two returnees joined us, enjoying the ABTA event which featured a Beat the Board finals format, Su-perb Bowling Fun.

On an easier medium scoring condition the scores to make the finals were: Men +88 and Ladies +76.

In the qualifying An-thony Jilek fired a +166 to lead the men and pretty Claire Avila led the ladies at +142. They will receive paid entries to their next regular event.

The Super Seniors added to the board were unbelievably at +87. 3 men Vic Paolucci, Romeo Bau-tista and Newcomer Eldous Chan. This is a first ever, all 3 man plus Sue Leland la-dies +32 were added to the Beat Board Finals which is where you finish in this one is where you cash.

Anthony drew the Match Series $1,770 and a 666 saw no Matches/Winners so we estimate the Match Series at $2,850 Saturday at Oak Tree Lanes.

The Mystery Match Doubles were drawn by Claire Avila and the 359 doubles score worth $2,700 was matched by John Sam-son and Giang Huynh who happily accepted their half of the pot and $1,350 each.

The Doubles will be esti-mated at $800 at Oak Tree Saturday.

The 3-6-9 Pot worth $1,100 had Cyndi Kelley and Patrick Rodriguez miss on shot 3 so they shared the $100 consolation.

The Beat the Board Fi-nals took the floor with 36 bowlers. It was a real good one with higher scoring again. After the first game Sandy Rosenblum had the lead +71 also winning the side pot, closely followed by Michael Zhang +66, Sun Sundara +51, Danny Egiilos +52 and Danny Reece Jr +42.

Game Two had Michael Zhang +115 take the lead with his nice 249 game and Steven Wong is surging with a big 268 to win the 2nd side pot and after two games Zhang +115 led!! Sandy Rosenblum 2nd +104 and Wong jumped to +93 3rd, Eguilos still 4th +89 and Alfred Satorre 5th. Several others were in reach going into game 3 for the title.

Game 3 saw Steven Wong stay tough and fin-ish with a nice +150 firing a 257 game and by the way, all scores include handicap. Mr. Wong we will call him on this eve, wins his first ever ABTA Title and a tidy $2,400 payday and the 3rd sidepot and he is not done

yet folks!! Alfred Satorre jumped to 2nd place his highest ever for the like-able Super Senior with great bowling taking the runner up position +113 and Michael Zhang in 3rd +111 $200.

4th-5th were Romeo Borillo and Danny Egui-los $110, 6-9th $105 were Happy Birthday Gal Anali-za Agoncillo, William Gar-rett, Danny Reece Jr, and Sandy Rosenblum. 10-16th $100 were Claire Avila Sun Sundara, JeJe Gabriel, Freddy Zamora, Jo Jo Bar-celona, Vic Paolucci, and Reny Alkonga at $100.

Our Champion Mr. Wong had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $2,555 and he drew a 225 and UNBELIEV-ABLY he was the winner. That is a first in the ABTA! Well, good things hap-pen to good people as they say!!! That totals $4955 not including brackets and sidepots and horses. What a great evening!!

Champion Steven Wong hails from from La Mirada. He is single ladies and used a Hammer drilled by Frank Bellinder. He is One of the Good Guys for sure, and

very nice to see him win his first title. He has been around the ABTA over 20 + year including watching his mom as a youngster. His proud parents Bill and Danielle were on hand to see the win!! Great peo-ple here!! Congrats to the Wong Family!!

Eddie Satorre really bowled well in his second runner up finish! He is from Ontario and usually bowls with the Will Samson Gang of bowlers from the inland Empire. Eddie is a great guy always smiling and happy. Nice bowling Eddie a title is next!!

Michael Zhang hails from Monterey Park and is single. He used a IQ tour drilled by Memo at Chap-arral Lanes. Michael is another fine young man!! Nice bowling Mr. Zhang.

Asked a couple participants for their take on bowling this tournament—first-time youth entrant, Zack Long of Taft, CA, said, “It was a very fun tournament, the direc-tors did a great job on the tournament, and a great way to honor Tony Reyes!” Zack’s partner, Chris Preble/Coach for Fresno State Men’s & Women’s Bulldog Bowl-ing Teams, added, “I really enjoyed participating in the Tony Reyes Memorial. Tony was a good friend and his loss has left a great void in the bowling community. The turnout of talented youth bowlers was impressive and hon-ored his memory. The mood during the tournament was light and fun but very competitive—the way Tony would have wanted it. I look forward to supporting the event in the future.” And, PBA regular to bowl in this event, PJ Haggerty of Roseville, CA, added, “Bowling a Jr/Adult tournament in Tony’s name is a no-brainer for me. Tony was a mentor of mine through junior bowling and college. He inspired and encouraged so many kids to practice, go to college, and give the tour a shot. It only makes sense that his buddies bowl his tournament. It’s what he would expect from us.”

Congratulations to the 2016 Tony Reyes Memorial Adult-Youth Tournament winners:

SAN JOSE — In a 32-lane bowling center, located in San Jose, just three years ago, the Tony Reyes Memorial event was born. Ed Godbout, the center’s youth director, wanted to pay tribute to the man who encouraged him to start a youth program at 4th Street Bowl—Tony Reyes. Each year this tournament has grown and improved thanks to the commitment of Godbout to make this a event bowl-ers will come and bowl with a youth bowler and share in the memory of a person whose memory still lives on in so many bowlers’ lives to this day. Some enter with a youth friend or relative; others enter and are placed with a youth partner. Some enter to bowl in the scratch division while others come to bowl the handicap division. Some bowl just one squad; others bowl several. It’s all for fun and it’s all to help raise funds to support the Tony Reyes Memorial Scholarship.

The 2016 tournament took place the weekend of Janu-ary 9-10. This year’s event was expanded by adding more squads to accommodate the large amount of entries. “Af-ter having to turn away bowlers last year, I wanted to make sure I had enough spots for everyone to bowl, so I added more squads, and, again this year, it got so big I had re-entries and I had to stop taking people in. I guess this is a good problem to have!” said Godbout. Godbout said he also talked with as many entrants this year to get feed-back as he could and already is planning on adding another squad for 2017!

This year’s event grew by about 100 more entrants. Over the weekend there were 101 handicapped teams and 35 scratch teams competing which brought his total num-ber of entrants to 272! The tournament drew PBA mem-bers PJ Haggerty, Marty Deh, Max Epps, Chris Preble, Joe Goldstein Sr., and Joe Goldstein, Jr. Sean Mamlock even dropped by to check it out! Godbout even enlisted some of his PAB buddies to come out and help with the event.

And, as always, Tony Reyes’ family were there the entire weekend to take in the festivities—Jessica (Tony’s Mom), Norma (Tony’s sister), Albert (Tony’s brother), Mike (Tony’s nephew) and Gianna (Tony’s daughter). Godbout added, “I can always depend on all of them to show up anytime I do anything with Tony’s name. They even show up in Reno for the NorCal All Stars event where I give out scholarships!”

Something new this year, Godbout went out and or-dered one-of-a-kind trophies for the champions for this year and from here on out. Although money is used to purchase the champion trophies and plaques, most of the money raised goes back in to the Tony Reyes Memorial Scholarship fund as everyone who helps put this tourna-ment on are all volunteers. This year, Godbout said, “I will be giving away over $4,000.00 in scholarships and adding more next year.”

And, for the first time this year’s event had not one but two 300 games shot! The first one was on Saturday’s Handicap squad and was rolled by adult Scott Cramer; the second was bowled by another adult, Mark Archuleta, on Sunday’s Handicap squad. For this event, the Handicap squads are bowled on a house shot and the Scratch squads were bowled on the Tony Reyes pattern that Cathie Judy, the manager at 4th Street Bowl, and Godbout came up with.

Tournament is a Mega Watt Smiling Success!by Bette Addington, California Bowling Writers

Life in the fast lane—Tony is smiling down on Ed God-bout this month as he just found out he was chosen as the 2015 PBA Tony Reyes Memorial Service Award recipient! And rightfully so, as he is already working on the 2017 event saying it will be held again in January, “right after the holidays” as that time seems to work out because there are no other tournaments going on at this time. In addition, he currently has a youth program of 40 bowlers. If you missed this year’s event and would still like to contribute to the Tony Reyes Memorial Scholarship fund, donations are accepted all year long. You can follow on Facebook by liking the “Tony Reyes Memorial Scholarship” page, or you can reach Godbout at (408) 314-0248.

Jason Belmonte missed his historic moment on Jan. 20 when he was named GEICO Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year for the third consecutive year, tying a record held by bowling legends Walter Ray Williams Jr., Earl Anthony (twice) and Mark Roth. As the announcement was being made live on PBA’s Xtra Frame online video-streaming service by PBA Commissioner Tom Clark, Belmonte was in a hospital in Orange, New South Wales, Australia, with wife Kimberly, awaiting the birth of his third child.

“I wasn’t watching; I was with Kimberly when I heard my phone blow up with a lot of messages,” Belmonte said. “I knew it was either really good news, or really bad. I saw it was great news, and immediately thought it would be the second-best news of the day.”

Daughter Sylvie Joan Belmonte arrived minutes later (weigh-ing in at just over 7 pounds and measured 18.8 inches).

“I’m in no way close to the realm of talent of those three gen-tlemen (Williams, Anthony and Roth),” Belmonte added, “but they are the benchmark I strive for. The ones who walk before show us what greatness looks like. I want to be great, and those guys inspire me to maybe one day get there.”

by Mary LynlyRandy Gulley sold Christmas trees to make money to buy his

first camera – a Brownie. He says he always liked taking pic-tures and he happens to have the rare gift of knowing how to use a camera to its fullest, a gift that he has honed to a highly skilled talent. He believes that anyone can take pictures but not everyone can take good pictures and that is apparent in his many pictures.

If you have ever had pictures taken at a special event or been the photographer yourself and found you didn’t have the cam-era set properly. I’m sure that was a painful experience many people can share with you. The same is true in the case of today’s cameras that pretty much do it all, but if you really don’t have a feel for proper compilation or lighting you were probably disap-pointed in the results.

Photography has always been a love of Randy’s. You rarely find him these days without his camera. What is better, Randy loves bowling and he combines these loves into taking pictures of bowlers and bowling events. Many of his fine accomplish-ments have graced the covers of local and national bowling pub-lications. But, there is more that makes up Randy Gulley.

He was born in St. Louis, Missouri and eventually came to Azusa, California where he graduated from the local high school. At age 19 he went directly into the Army and served three years on active duty. Soon after his discharge, he went to work for the U.S. Department of Defense as Administrator for Military bases where he served for 29 years. His work took him to bases in Colorado Springs, South Korea, Okinawa, and California and he spent his last two years with the Army in Germany.

Randy never stopped bowling and in Colorado Springs he immersed himself in the Pikes Peak Bowling Association. He was active in promoting the State Association merger among many other accomplishments. Randy was the first President of the Colorado High School Bowling Federation and served as the Colorado State BA President for two years. He credits bowling for his extensive travel in the U.S. including attendance at 15 National Conventions. All this travel left him with five states he has not yet visited.

Randy was selected as the torchbearer for the 32nd Rocky Mountain Senior Games, held in Greeley, CO – the only bowler to have ever been selected for this distinct honor. Always inter-ested in charitable events, for nine years he chaired the Annual Fulfill a Youth Wish – Team USA, Colorado Springs All Stars Pro-Am tournament to benefit Make a Wish. During that time they raised $117,158 and sponsored 21 kids. He said it takes from $5,000 to $7,000 to fulfil each wish.

His pictures are also a memorable record of his family: Chil-dren – Jennifer, Randy Jr. and stepchildren Marlene, Summer and Scott plus 14 grandchildren! Randy pictures are testament to the many birthday parties and other family events he endeavors to attend across the country. Those events just wouldn’t be the same without dad/grandpa and his camera.

Randy now resides in Las Vegas and says for a single guy it is reasonable and convenient and there are so many of superior bowling events these days to keep him busy. He once bowled five leagues a week but having fallen off of a roof in years back he is limited to one league and a No-Tap. When he can he joins with his brothers, Dave of Canyon Lake, CA and Kenny from Menifee, CA for tournaments. Both brothers are 200+ average bowlers and Dave is a member of the Citrus Belt Hall of Fame. Randy is a member of the Colorado State USBC Hall of Fame and the Pikes Peak USBC Hall of Fame. A 200 average bowler for many years himself, he is proud of having been selected to the Colorado Springs All-Star Team for 13 years. At one time he bowled in five leagues at five different centers and averaged 231 at one center and 220 combined in the other four for the season!

Randy Gulley is still deeply involved with all aspects of bowling in one way or another. He recently spent almost a whole day looking for a “sub” for the Military Bowling Championships being held in Las Vegas so the team wouldn’t have to take a zero. Look for him at a tournament or bowling event of some sort with his Canon camera – he believes Canon is the most user friendly and does the best job! One of the greatest assets to any organi-zation is a good cameraperson and Randy Gulley is one of the best.

BOWLING NEWSFebruary 11, 2016 Page 9

PBA history proves over and over how difficult it is to advance to a national television final, but what’s even more difficult is maintaining a winning record once you get there. Compared against all PBA players throughout the Tour’s more than 50 years of television shows, only four active players rank among the top 20 in winning per-centage for a minimum of 10 matches bowled on televi-sion. Fifteen years after the fact, Ohio native Jim Pencak – who ran off a PBA-record streak of 16 consecutive match wins on television – remains the all-time leader in winning percentage with a record of 22 wins and 8 losses, a 73.33 percent success rate, in his 12 career TV finals.

A fairly distant second place is PBA Hall of Famer Dick Ritger who won 40 matches and lost 18 times in 33 appearances, a 68.96 success rate. Among active players, Australia’s Jason Belmonte ranks sixth (37 wins, 19 loss-es, 66.07%) in 32 appearances and South Carolina’s Tom-my Jones ranks seventh (43 wins, 23 losses, 65.15%) in 37 appearances. Semi-retired Mika Koivuniemi has won 61.03% of his matches to rank 16th and Patrick Allen has won 60.31% of his matches for rank 19th.

The 20 most successful PBA players on television, based on at least 10 TV finals, are:1, Jim Pencak, 22-8, 73.33%)in 12 appearances.2, Dick Ritger, 40-18, 68.96% in 33 appearances.3, Gary Skidmore, 23-12, 67.64% in 17 appearances.4 (tie), Paul Colwell, 16-8, 66.66% in 12 appearances, and Steve Neff, 14-7, 66.66% in 10 appearances.6, Jason Belmonte, 37-19, 66.07% in 32 appearances.7, Tommy Jones, 43-23, 65.15% in 37 appearances.8, Steve Martin, 26-14, 65% in 20 appearances.9, Tom Crites, 12-7, 63.15% in 12 appearances.10, Randy Pedersen, 32-19, 62.74% in 31 appearances.11, Steve Hoskins, 37-22, 61.71% in 30 appearances.12, Johnny Guenther, 23-14, 61.16% in 20 appearances.13, Roger Bowker, 18-11, 62.06% in 16 appearances.14 (tie), Mike McGrath and George Branham III, 19-12, 61.29%, McGrath in 18 appearances; Branham in 17 appearances.16, Mika Koivuniemi, 47-30, 61.03% in 41 appearances.17 (tie), Pete Couture and Don McCune, 20-13, 60.60%, both in 17 appearances.19, Patrick Allen, 38-25, 60.31% in 38 appearances.20 (tie), Doug Kent, 39-26, 60% in 35 appearances, and Bryan Goebel, 30-20, 60% in 29 appearances.

CABAZON — With several of the JAT Sport Juniors competing at the JBT tournament and Morongo Casino Lanes, it was a lighter than usual turn out last Saturday at Keystone Lanes. However, for one of those JAT Sport Juniors, the trip to the desert was well worth it. Kylie Shishima bowled her first 300 game on Saturday during the JBT tournament. Given the left-hander’s smooth style, this will likely be the first of many. Great job Kylie!

Saturday marked the end of the second round for the JAT Sport Juniors, with Julian Zavala shooting the high series of the week, a 784 for four games on the Sydney pattern. David Schneider rolled a 223 on his way to a 715 series. Congratulations to Solomon Salama, Nick Caner, and Jackie Azvedo who earned Junior Gold Championship spots for this round. They join first round advancers Ju-lian, David, and Austin Sugarman.

DOWNEY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough as Threadworks moved into 1st place in Round 5 by sweep-ing past The Professional Approach 5-0. The US Open pat-tern was playing especially tough tonight as most teams struggled. Paul Varela led the charge to the top, as he fired a very nice 604 series to lead the sweep. Danny Ly led Power House Video Games to a sweep of their own, as they took down Blizz Yogurt 5-0. Danny shot 625, while Greg Neuer led Blizz with 581. Team DV8 is once again in contention for the round lead, as Sam Hitchcock winged his way to 242/623 and led DV8 to a 4-1 win over Linder Insurance.

Linder was paced by Kurt Arakaki 592 and Kevin Val-monte 591. In the best scoring match of the night, Pino’s Pizza prevailed 3-2 as they held off Alhambra Coin Center to win Team Totals by 13. Both teams bowled well, finishing as #1 and #2 scoring teams for the night, and their pair was 250 pins higher than any other two teams combined scoring for a pair. Leading the way for Pino’s was Ramon Torres 627 & Leonard Ruiz 600, while Alhambra was led by Doug Kempt 660 & Steve Gaucin 608. Herzog Insurance took a 4-1 win over the PJ-less Los Altos Trophies team as Mikey Villarreal shot 625 for the winners, while Top Dog for the night went to Los Altos’ Buddy Lucas with a very fine 670.

In the roll off team matches, it was Erickson Foods once again losing the first two games, only to come back strong in Game 3 and not only win the game, but Team Totals. Er-ickson pulls within 2.5 games of holding the #1 seed with the 3-2 win, as nobody managed to shoot 600 series, Herbert

Jones led the way for Keystone Lanes with 589, while Jason Buenviaje shot 563 for Ericksons. Charlie Kinstler shot 614 to lead SYSCO to a 5-0 sweep of Forest Lanes who strug-gled all night to catch SYSCO. Mason Man O’Lantern Sher-man topped Forest with 589. American Harvest Vodka out shot CASAMIGO’S Tequila and won 4-1 as Kevin Jones rolled 588, while Vernon Adams topped the Tequila team with 565. Mike Jennings shot 594 to lead Tifco Industries to a 4-1 win over BOWLIUM, who had the pair’s high series, Craig Stevens with 623. Matt Mosley powered his way to 255 & 638 to lead Cook’s Bowling Supply to a 5-0 sweep over J.A.T. DeeRonn Booker led the Junior Amateur Tour team with 549. In the final pairing, it was GJC Services win-ning 3 points as Juan Zavala topped his squad with 511.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Sam Hitchcock 242 Game 2 –Jason Buenviaje 226 however the Financial Advi-sor’s pot was won by Buddy Lucas 225 for $240 with Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. 2nd place with 223 for $100. Game 3 Super Pot went to Mikey Villarreal 255, quite the contrast from last week where you needed 11 strikes or more to win. The TRUE ANCHOR award goes to a new winner, Barry Couch Jr. collected the honors with a 3 game set of 361.

One more week on the dreaded US Open shot to try and move into the Round Lead, improve your standing, or move up the ladder in the Roll Off seedings. I’m sure most can’t wait for May to get here, since we will be finished with this pattern. Hope to see you all down at Del Rio next Monday in Downey. Have a blessed week everyone!

DOWNEY — The Brunswick Invitational started the fourth round this Monday adopting the 2015 USBC Nation-als pattern from El Paso for this last normal round. Scored were all over the board as bowlers tried to match up their styles and equipment to the over-under of the new condi-tion.

In the “A” match, league total-wins leaders and first-round winners Professional Approach met up runners-up from the third round Linder’s Insurance. Linder’s took game one by a couple dozen and the second game by 65 to build a near triple-digit lead for totals. Professional Ap-proach roared back and took it to the 10th frame just missing catching them for totals falling 18 pins short for the 1-4 loss. Anthony Santos’ 585 was high for Linder’s while Ramiro Garcia’s 598 helped Pro Approach to their 1 point.

In the “B” match, third-round winners DV8 met Ketel One Vodka with 63 points putting them in fourth overall. DV8 came out striking taking the first game by nearly 100 but Ketel One stormed back to take games 2, 3 and totals. Sol Cericos lit them up for 638 to lead Ketel One while Ash-kan Tahvildaran led DV8 with a nice 623 set.

Second-round winners Don Julio Tequila met up with 6th overall Keystone Lanes in the 5-6 match. Don Julio took the bookends and totals for 4 points. Bobby Campagnale wrung his way to 627 to lead Don Julio while Herbert Jones was back with a 606 set to help Keystone to their 1 win.

Los Altos Trophy and Forest Lanes put their 59.5 and 59 win records on the line in the 7-8 match. Scoring was low but Los Altos took 4 in a tight match- squeeked out game 1 by 5 sticks, took game 2 by 42, but dropped the last game by 6. Joe Jimenez was high for Los Altos with a 650 set while Robert Renko could only put up 554 to lead Forest.

Alhambra Coin Center jumped up to 9th overall after a strong 3rd round matching up with Pino’s Pizza at 54 points. The Pizza guys were all over it taking all 5 points with a

consistant effort. Leonard Ruiz Jr. led Pino’s with a 665 effort while Alhambra Coin Center was paced by Doug Kempt with a 592 set.

The 11-12 match featured J.A.T. who is second-overall in average but 11th overall in points with Cook’s Bowling Sup-ply both at 52 wins. Cook’s came out striking and took game 1 but J.A.T roared back to take game 2 but couldn’t hold on for totals. DeeRonn Booker got no help with his 650 set to lead J.A.T. while Matt Schermerhorn’s 584 led Cook’s to their 4 points.

13th place Threadworks matched up with 14th place Er-ickson Foods. The Threadworks bunch came out strong to take game one but it was all Erickson from that point for the 4-1 win. Michelle King led Erickson Foods with a 607 set while Paul Varela was once again steady for Threadworks with a 597 set.

The 15-16 place match put Wowo’s Smokin’ Hot BBQ against the Triple-R Relax-Release-Repeat team, both teams looking to rebound after last round. Team Triple-R swept right through the BBQ boys with Vern Adams leading the pair with a 659 set while Greg Neuer put up 572 to lead Wowo’s.

Sysco, GJC Janitorial, Herzog Insurance and Cremation Centers of CA rounded out the 20 teams matching up in the last two matches of the night. GJC Janitorial swept past Sy-sco led by Mike Jennings 573 set and Herzog Insurance took 4 from CCCA led by Kevin Gagnon’s 597 set. Paul Barraco was strong as usual to lead Sysco with a 573 set while Andre Pitchford’s 512 set was high for Creamation Center and their one point.

Sidepots went to Sam Hitchcock-258 and Vernon Ad-ams-244 for $66 each. Third game super-pot went to Doug Kempt-225 for $198. Financial Advisor’s super-pot went to Vernon Adams-244 for $220 with 2nd to Sol Cericos-238 for $100. Come on down on Monday nights at 8:30 to see the best scratch league in Southern California in action!
