But even though DACC was assured of four more years as host, don’t expect the College and the City of Danville to rest on their laurels. “There’s always more that we can do,” says Athletic Director Tim Bunton, “and we’re looking at a number of ways of improving the experience for athletes, coaches, and visitors.” Ideas floating around include new trophy cases, a weight room, a practice facility, and a massive video board on the western wall of the Mary Miller Gym. One improvement that seems far more imminent will be the installation of HVAC units in the Gym. For more than six months, Administrative Services Vice President Mike Cunningham was worked with the State’s Capital Development Board to manage a project that could have air conditioning in the Gym in time for next year’s tournament. That would make March a cool month too.

DACC Renewed As Host Through 2023T.S. Eliot had it all wrong. April isn’t the cruelest month—it’s the coolest!

Fresh off this year’s Mar. 19-23 national-basketball-championship tournament at DACC, we sent three ambassadors to Richmond, Virginia, in early April for the NJCAA’s annual meeting. Our ambassadors’ mission was to persuade officials overseeing commu-nity-college athletics to extend DACC’s role as men’s basketball Division II championship host for another three years.

Mission accomplished—and with a slam dunk!

Brian Hensgen, DACC’s executive director for the American Job Center, performed brilliantly in his voluntary role as chair throughout the Mar. 19-23 national championship tournament. Ably assisted by Campus Services Supervisor Brad Weaver, Mr. Hens-gen stepped right up to fill the void left by the pass-ing of legendary tournament leader Dick Shockey. He oversaw contributions by hundreds of volunteers—DACC employees and community members—to help deliver another magical week of basketball on the DACC Campus. This was the College’s 26th-straight year as host.

Along with Mr. Hensgen, the team of ambassadors included two local luminaries—Danville’s Director of the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau Jeanie Cooke and Neuhoff Media’s Executive Vice President Mike Hulvey.

According to Ms. Cooke, tournament officials were impressed and relieved that DACC was able to overcome the loss of Mr. Shockey and host this year’s championship games without missing a beat. She says, “They appreciated that the College had someone

like Brian stepping into Dick’s shoes—someone from the College who’s young and energetic and well-organized and who learned from Dick about how to successfully manage a basketball tournament.”

The NJCAA Board approved DACC’s bid to host the tournament for three additional years, which means through 2023. As Mr. Hensgen points out, “They were impressed enough to say that the NJCAA would con-sider naming DACC as a long-term host for Division II men’s basketball once the current contract expires.” Only two other colleges in the USA have that distinc-tion. By 2023, DACC will be aiming to become the third.

But even though DACC was assured of four more years as host, don’t expect the College and the City of Danville to rest on their laurels. “There’s always more that we can do,” says Athletic Director Tim Bunton, “and we’re looking at a number of ways of improving the experience for athletes, coaches, and visitors.”

Ideas floating around include new trophy cases, a weight room, a practice facility, and a massive video board on the western wall of the Mary Miller Gym.

2Ag Day 2019 and Plant Sale Thurs., April 18The Danville Area Community College Ag Club, with the support of area agricultural organizations, busi-nesses and individuals, takes this opportunity to an-nounce Ag Day 2019. There will be a variety of events available for Ag Day which will be on THURSDAY, APRIL 18 on the DACC campus at the Mary Miller Complex.

A special feature of the day is a barbecue luncheon that will be served from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Mary Miller Gym. Carry-out lunches are not avail-able. The luncheon will consist of a BBQ sandwich, potato salad, chips, and milk, pop or water and will be served for 50¢—the price the farmer usually re-ceives for these products after producing and selling them! Additional donations are gladly accepted.

Ag businesses that will have displays include DACC, 4-H/Extension, Illini FS (they are bringing their sprayer simulator), Growmark, WIXYclassic, Vermil-ion County Farm Bureau, AgDronePro, John Deere – Prototype division, Precision Agrinomics, NRCS, Soil and Water Conservation, FSA, USDA, and FBFM.

Other items of interest during the day are programs that will be focusing on careers and pathways to those careers for students, both high school and current col-lege. These are also open to the public.

At 12:30PM Illinois Ag Director, John Sullivan will be giving the keynote address in the Mary Miller Gym.

Other sessions are from 1:00-1:55PM and include the following topics: policy and government, horticulture, science and technology, Ag-Business and Production Ag.

The public is cordially invited. There is no cost for Ag Day except for the farmer’s price luncheon.

The Ornamental Horticulture/Sustainability program will be holding their annual Plant Sale from 9AM-2PM at the Julius W. Hegeler II Ornamental Horticul-ture building.

3DACC Players Show Sat., April 27 & Sun., April 28The DACC Players will present the three person show “Pizza Man” on Sat., April 27 at 7PM and Sun., April 28 at 2PM in the Bremer Center Theater. Cost for adults is $10 and for students $5. “Pizza Man” is a comedic farce that turns the tables on gender roles. Two girls who are roommates decide they are sick and tired of men constantly taking advantage of women, so they decide if men can do it, so can they. They agree to find a guy they can “take advantage of” and then dump. Here enters the unsuspecting Pizza Man, and the comedy ensues. Nothing turns out quite as anyone plans, but all of the characters find out quite a bit about themselves by the end of the show. This play does contain mild adult themes and a small about of coarse language. Parents should be aware it is not appropriate for small children.

Legislative UpdateThe Illinois Legislative Spring Break begins April 15 and continues through April 26. When the Legisla-ture reconvenes, they have about five weeks until the end of the session.

Legislators have filed four State Constitutional Amendments to repeal the Pension Protection Clause. Any attempt to pass these amendments to the Illinois Constitution would require that they be placed on the Election Ballot. SUAA has been very successful so far in stopping this legislation.

Governor Pritzker is looking for more state income through his graduated income tax idea along with legalizing cannabis and sports betting. Other items being considered to raise funds include the Motor Fuel Tax, license plate fee increases, the Capitol Bill, and lining up the Pensions Recovery Program (also known as taking a “Pension Holiday”).

Stay tuned . . . .
