Alex ‘TripleCC’ Carney, Warren Wood Rangers, UK Scenario Team Of The Year 2009

A word from the editor…It’s been a chilly start to the new year with the longest cold spell in decades but everyone’s twitching to get back onto the paintball field and the new season is about to start with a vengeance.

In this issue, we take a look back at last year and a look forward to this year! On the tournament side of the fence, Wendy gives a rundown on the UK Masters winners of 2009 and we have the full listing of Masters and Millennium dates for 2010. Russ throws in his two pennies worth on the 0.5 cal debate and we have news and dates of the A-Ball events at NPF.

Going into the woods, Al Murray is celebrating the publication of his book – The Handbook of Scenario Paintball; it’s a great read with lots of pics and sure to give every scenario paintballer plenty of ideas no matter how experienced. Read the review by Tim ‘Timboy’ Barnett on page 15.

We also have a feature on the return of Saving Ryan’s Privates and Diamond Wars, along with a full list of dates for this year’s scenario calendar. One of the highlights of the year looks to be the 10th anniversary of the Kenny’s games – has it really been ten years since John Sosta first donned Satan’s furry pants and Big Gay Al roamed the woods?

Onto field operations and the paintball site industry seems to be weathering the recession. Steve Bull has confirmed that the conference will be going ahead despite some doubt on take up. Check out page 23 for more details. Manson give us an update on their latest insurance product and we have a review of some great props and signs from WEAREPAINTBALL if you’re looking to jazz up your site ready for the new season.

With packed calendars on all fronts, this year looks like it should be a cracking one all round. Keep warm, keep on ‘balling and have fun!

Until next time,

tRaining at bUnKeR Zone A new development in 2009 was the opening of a new training venue, Bunker Zone at Dishforth. In partnership with BZ Paintball and the UK Masters the venture aimed to introduce players from rec ball to tournament ball and encourage single players that don’t have a team to play with to go along and meet like-minded people to form a team of their own. Even in the short period of time it has been open already four new teams have been created that will be playing the UK Masters in the new season.

Bunker Zone has a Millennium-sized field with the 2009 setup to allow teams to progress to UKM Lite, as well as two training fields for players wanting to train on drills rather than play games. There are a number of similar training venues in the UK so if you would like to know your nearest training club then get in touch with Wendy through the website www.uk-masters.co.uk and she will send you in the right direction.

MillenniUM SeRieS 2010 The Millennium Series have announced five dates for next season: • 16th to 18th April - Spain • 21st to 24th May – MAXS European Masters in Germany • 2nd to 4th July (tbc) – Paris, France • 10th to 12th September (tbc) – Campaign Cup in London • 22nd to 24th October (tbc) – Millennium Sarsilmaz Cup in Antalya, Turkey Check out www.millennium-series.com for more details.

European A-Ball SeriesStarting in April 2010, NPF Bassetts Pole will be hosting the European A-Ball Series, a 4-leg series with each event having a winning podium, and with 2010 standings going towards a league podium.

NPF’s amazing A-Ball Arena is the world’s first purpose-built pitch of its kind. Utilising unbeatable Tiger Turf as the surface, players will have the comfort of a soft landing, without getting covered in mud.

The cost for each event is £175 per team which includes the use of all of NPF’s facilities, free air/CO2 fills throughout the day and more importantly unlimited ammo as every player is issued with pods of reusable A-Balls, the second generation high density rubber balls from the founder of Re-Ball. There will be at least eight refs on the field for each game so don’t try playing on!

2010 DatesSaturday 24th April will be the first leg of the European A-Ball Series.

Saturday 5th June – Leg 2

Saturday 24th July – Leg 3 will also be the second European A-Ball 5 Man Championships. After the 5-man, NPF will also be hosting the ‘I Am King’ event, a showcased 1v1 special NPF Format. One player is put forward from each team to enter while the rest of the team can retire to the Gallery for some classic NPF Refreshments and to cheer their guys on!

The night of the 24th July will also be one to remember. The Campsite Party put on last year was mild to what is planned for 2010. If you missed it, then just ask around, NPF was definitely the place to be last year, so this year’s cannot be missed - make sure you put it in your diary! The booze will be flowing, the music playing, the bonfire smoking and the food devoured! So if you want to hang around for the after party, feel free!

Saturday 27th November – Leg 4: NPF Cup

Hi ladies and gentle folk, it is that time of the year when a review of the season is due. So how do I think 2009 was overall? It has been an interesting year for sure especially as we are quite obviously in a recession. You wouldn’t have thought it with an average attendance at every Masters event of 44 teams, including the cream of UK Paintball – London Nexus, London Shock, The Firm, Warped, London Shock 2 and DXS Entity Lite.

When the up and coming teams see such top quality paintball it definitely inspires them to train more. And there are also the many teams like Warped, The Firm, Rebellion, Dyehard, UK Asylum, SoF, BZ and DV8 and many more teams and individuals, some of them site teams, that actively promote the sport to new players either encouraging them to set up their own team or join existing teams to make the sport grow.

I have seen some of the best paintball this season in a long time, but none so good as the last event when it all mattered both in UKM Lite and UK Masters. You always enter an event with a rough idea of which teams would play well and be top five. Rebellion Red was the team being stalked for first place in the UK Masters as were The Firm in the UKM Lite, but neither of these teams disappointed. They didn’t place first at the event but with their usual consistency they won enough to take the series.

UKM Lite Champions, The Firm, who were also

UK Masters Champions in 2009, had an awesome year in the domestic series as well as in the Millennium European Series where they placed 18th out of 27 in division one. They missed the Turkish leg which cost them in ranking but for sure they would have placed considerably higher.

UKM Lite Runners Up were Warped who again played consistently all season and showed why they previously played SPL

(Semi Pro League) at the Millennium Series.

UKM Lite 3rd place went to DXS Entity Lite, a southern team that came to the Midlands and showed us what they are capable of. They also played the Millennium European Series and had a very successful season, eventually ranking 19th.

The UK Masters 5 Man Series Champions Rebellion Red had never won a division of the Masters but consistently were top 4, only coming 5th at the final leg.

This is a team that promotes paintball at their sponsor’s site to the degree that they normally enter an amber and a green squad… keep up the good work. After speaking with them they were talking about taking their team to the next level playing the Millennium European Series and I know they can do it.

The UK Masters Runners Up were BZ. The whole team originally played scenario ball, but after a training session with Tommy Pemberton of London Nexus they seemed to push themselves to another level. They still have a very strong scenario squad and occasionally go back to playing woods ball but plan to play UKM Lite next season as well.

The UK Masters 3rd place went to DV8 Black, a northern team that trains with BZ at the Bunker Zone training site. This is another team that played consistently through the season, but also backed up their DV8 squad in the UKM Lite, because some players just love playing paintball that much.

Huge congratulations to all the teams and thanks to the many people behind the scenes who have helped this season. n

“Huge congrats to all the teams and thanks to everyone behind the scenes...”

Page 10: PBUK Issue 51

The confusion is over the introduction of a new calibre paintball and to be honest about it, you won’t have a problem with any of the top end new kit you may have as all the manufacturers have produced drop-in adapter kits so you can use whatever size ball you want. But why have they decided to introduce a smaller ball at all?

Well if you read some of the stuff on the web it is purely for economic reasons. Manufacturers can make and transport more paintballs at less cost, giving themselves a higher profit margin. And if that means more manufacturers surviving the current downturn and having more

pennies to put back into paintball as an industry, then it might not be a bad thing.

.50 cal is not anything new at all. It was dying a slow death when I got into paintball but it had one major flaw that they could not overcome – the shell was so thick it used to hurt like hell and the breaking rate was quite low.

You have to remember one thing, good quality paint hurts a lot less because the shell breaks on impact and the energy contained within the ball is displaced over a wider area. The .50 cal rubbish we used to use put all that energy in the very spot it made contact with and a few yelps used to be heard from many a field.

The new stuff is made with a thinner shell and in the tests done so far, the same amount of energy is required to break the shell as is in the .68 paintballs in use today.

This is not an experiment – make no bones about it that this new ball is undoubtedly here to stay and I guess in time we will all say our goodbyes to the .68 ball.

So if we believe cash is king, and the new size ball is all about reducing costs, what will the benefit to the players be? It depends how you look at it. I have always believed the price of paint was far too cheap and that we are now suffering from that mistake. Sponsorship is being cut to the bone across the board from even the biggest companies in the industry because they had to compete with the get rich quick Charlies who imported cheap and nasty paint and flooded the market at prices that could make a good wage for those doing it but could never sustain a viable business.

That foolish episode in the short life of paintball has put us in the position we are in at the moment and I for one really hope the players do not get paint any cheaper. In fact I hope the price even goes up. If a box had a tariff of three or four bucks a case levied on them to be used as sponsorship and promotion, the industry could get us out of this mess we find ourselves in.

Would it cost the tournament players more? That depends if they are stupid enough to do as they are told and line the pockets of promoters who are giving nothing back to the game or themselves as players. Who says a series should be every month? Why not six or seven events a year – that’s plenty for a paintball series, but then that’s a whole other page and can wait until next time. n

Macdev tactical dRone MaRKeR For years now MacDev have made high end markers for use in tournament paintball. The designers at MacDev have now made a new marker specifically designed for use in scenario paintball.

The Drone is CNC machined from solid Aluminium billets, without castings or cheap plastic parts. The board inside the Drone is based on the Cyborg RX electronic platform, however programming and feedback is achieved via a chameleon LED housed in the rear of the grip frame. And add-ons for the Drone will give almost limitless combinations and customisation to your marker, the Drone is the perfect platform for your ideal scenario machine-gun.

Expect to see a lot of these on the field next year as MacDev have formed an association with the Scottish Warriors and the SW’s shall be using a wide range of the equipment available.picture by andy newberry

With season 2009 firmly behind us we can finally take a moment to reflect on how things went. As expected 2009 saw another surge in the number of events in the calendar suggesting that, despite the challenges facing the game and the wider industry, the UK scenario scene continues to go from strength to strength. There has also been a significant increase in the number of new teams springing up across the UK and this can only be good for scenario as a whole.

The UK Scenario awards were once again a great success and congratulations to everyone who lifted an award

at the event. There have also been a few low points not least Smart Parts decision to pull out of Europe which is perhaps a reflection on the difficulties facing businesses involved in paintball in the economic downturn.

Arguably the most significant development of the year was the creation of the UK Scenario Paintball Community (UKPSF) which has been created as a response to the ongoing debate within the UK scenario paintball community over how best to respond to the range of challenges

we currently face. The introduction of the VCR Act, recent high profile incidents with air bottles, airguns and

real and replica firearms have all contributed to place scenario paintball in the media spotlight.

As a result there is a general consensus amongst many within the industry that it is time to take steps to put our own house in order and by adopting some simple, common sense measures to improve safety standards and raise levels of awareness we can send a very clear message to both the authorities and the general public while ensuring that we can continue to enjoy the freedoms we have, until now, taken for granted.

To this end a number of UK players, teams and event organisers have been gathering feedback on the central issues that are likely to affect the scenario game while working together towards developing a set of industry standards. This spirit of cooperation has now been formalised into a new representative body known as the UK Scenario Paintball Community (UKSPC). The UKSPC has been established

with the full support of the UK Paintball Sports Federation and the central aim of the new body is to provide a mechanism by which the scenario community can work more closely together to protect the interests of UK Scenario Paintball for all while presenting scenario paintball in a positive light and promoting best practice in all areas. The main contact for the UKSPC will be Ian ‘Cambo’ Richardson who many of you will know as the driving force behind the annual UK Scenario Paintball Awards. As spokesman Cambo will be working closely with the UKPSF to ensure that the voice of the scenario community is heard at all levels.

Joining the UKSPC is completely free of charge. We all have a part to play in the development of scenario paintball in this country so get online at www.ukscenario.com and get involved. n

The UKSPC has been formed to identify problems that affect scenario paintball and implement solutions for those problems. The UKSPC has drafted a policy covering these issues and of the 32 games listed in the 2010 calendar, 29 have signed up to the policy.

So what differences can the players expect to see in the 2010 season?

• There will be a unified chrono level across all events set at 280fps (250fps for CO2 and indoor games).

• There will be extensive in-game random chrono checking of players

• All HPA bottles will be inspected before being used at events

• All players who wish to fill their HPA bottles will have to undergo Compulsory Air Safety Training once each year

• Zero tolerance of overshooting

• There will be no ‘homemade’ pyrotechnics allowed

The UKSPC will also be producing information fact sheets for players during the 2010 season which will cover subjects including scenario paintball and the law, advice on transporting equipment to and from events, how to maintain equipment safely and paint storage.

Responsible play will be promoted through a voluntary Players’ Code of Conduct, which will be available for download.

Ian Richardson, Chairman of the UKSPC, said: “It is hoped that all the efforts behind the scenes in recent months will not only result in real improvements in safety, but will also help to ward off the potential of any governmental interference or legislation should the spot light ever shine on the game.”

Issue51 PBUK 2010 page 14

Page 15: PBUK Issue 51

I tend to get sent my fair share of paintball books by authors or publishers looking to sell their publications in our shop or at our events and in truth, most are pretty poor. So when a publisher recently sent me The Scenario Paintball Handbook by friend and team captain Al Murray, I did allow myself a smile. Annoyingly, it’s actually rather good.

In my experience the biggest problem with most paintball books is that they tend to assume that the average paintballer has the commitment and skills of an SAS operative. As a result the tactical advice often bears no relation to what actually happens on any paintball field that I’ve ever played on.

Where The Scenario Paintball Handbook is different is that it has been written by a paintball player for other paintball players. It’s a subtle but crucial point.

It’s taken several years of work for the author to pull the book together, and it shows. It’s clearly been written to be relevant to both new players and veterans alike. For anyone who’s been playing for less than a year or who is thinking of getting involved in scenario paintball, this book should be required reading with a copy tucked into every new player’s kit bag. For people who have been around a bit, there is still plenty in there to get your teeth into.

First impressions of the book is that it has clearly been produced to very high production values. The front and back cover, illustrations and photographs are all very high quality with the sort of glossy finish that makes you feel guilty when dog-earing the page instead of using a book mark.

If you’ve played at any scenario games in the UK over the past couple of years, the chances are that you’ll find yourself pictured in here somewhere as all the images seem to have been taken at recent UK events which is nice if you want to impress your mates.

Probably what I like most about the book is the balance it strikes. Clearly Al’s intention is to pass on the experience and knowledge that he has built up over time to others in the hope that they will gain value from it, improve their game, their teamwork and ultimately enjoyment from scenario paintball. But what shines through from this paintball book, that is pointedly lacking in most others, is that you can achieve all of this while still playing with a smile on your face.

All in all a thoroughly good read and one that I’ll probably re-visit several times over a season. My only complaint is that it’s left me with very little ammunition which I could use to wind him up. I guess I’ll just have to bide my time.

After taking a break in 2008, Saving Ryan’s rejoined the scenario calendar for 2009 when BZ Paintball invited Tim Barnett and Lee Wickham of Shoreline paintball to run the game. They kept the character of the original game and it was great to see, once again, all the established scenario teams gathering at Yarm in the November cold.

SRP has always been a bit of a special game. Traditionally run by BZ, it was an event for the scenario purists and a way of the company thanking those players who had supported them throughout the season. All the best players and teams seemed to be there and each and every game was hard fought and brutal, and 2009 was to be no different.

In the weeks before the event, we were really excited to hear that Tippmann would be officially launching their new marker, the X7 Phenom, at the event.

We’ve enjoyed a really good working relationship with Tippmann for the whole of the 2009 season. Every item of equipment that Tippmann has been good enough to give us has been given out as prizes to the players at our games or auctioned off for charity. It’s a good example of how sometimes big companies like Tippmann support the UK game in a way which often isn’t noticed.

Onto the game itself and we invited Andy ‘Tank’ Cannon to general the American

side and Ian ‘StellaKing’ Pinchen to lead Ze Germans. All players were given a beret, red or green depending on which side they were on. The berets worked really well as a mechanism for team ID’s with players who didn’t want to wear them on their heads rolling them up and tucking them into their goggle straps or they were worn under epaulettes.

Everyone seemed on good form although a few looked like they had enjoyed the hotel bar a bit more than they should have the night before… mention no names… cough… Andy Newberry… cough cough.

The overall game was a lot closer than many people think. The principle difference between the two teams was in their tactical approach when it was their turn to attack down the field. The Germans adopted a wide front and strung a skirmish line right the way across the field, presumably to spread the defenders thinner. But this approach proved less effective than the American side that opted to put most of their strength behind a narrow front down the left, bypassing and largely ignoring the defenders in the Castle. It was this

method of attack that punched through the lines and got them onto the Bridge.

Either way it was great game with some terrific scraps. It was hard fought but fought fairly. Some of the battles on the Bridge were epic with ground being won and lost inch by inch by players on their bellies, absorbing stuff.

The final game was a non-scoring one essentially designed as a bit of a laugh. While it started off with the two of us defending the Galleon, the idea was that all 159 players would eventually fight over the ship itself.

Each side were given flags, a semaphore code sheet and code words. When they correctly flagged the codes, they would be allowed access to the ship. It was most amusing to watch the players walking into the middle of a paint storm flapping around with the flags. Because the noise was so loud, the flag wavers couldn’t hear us telling them that they had given the wrong code. So in the end, we both decided to shoot any flag wavers who gave the wrong code. They soon got the message!

As the light died away and the final shots were fired, everyone gathered for the prize giving ceremony. The prize fund was huge with some outstanding prizes with a paintball trip to Germany and one of the first three Tippmann X7 Phenom’s in the UK being the pick of the bunch.

All the prizes were raffled and the money raised was donated to the charity of the day. The game was taking place on Remembrance Sunday and earlier at 11am we had stopped the game to hold a two minute silence. Therefore, it was fitting that the charity of the day should be the Royal British Legion. We were delighted to raise £604.37.

All the players seemed to have enjoyed themselves and it appeared that this year’s SRP lived up to the standard that BZ had set previously. Taking on an iconic game like SRP leaves you open to criticism should it not live up to expectation. Thankfully everything seemed to go well and we can hand back the event to BZ for next year having completed our temporary custodial mission.

Thank you to all the people who donated so generously for the prize fund. Also thank you to the BZ staff and marshals who did a fantastic job in often very uncomfortable circumstances and lastly, thank you to all the players who have supported Shoreline not just at SRP, but throughout the 2009 season.

We’ll see you next year! n

The Hilton Hotel in Brighton recently played host to the 2009 UK Scenario Paintball Awards where representatives from all levels of the UK scenario scene braved the chilly November weather to attend this black tie event which seeks to recognise the achievements of individual players and teams.

This was the fifth year of the awards and the evening was once again hosted by Ian Richardson, chairman of the UK Scenario Paintball Community. Thanks go to BZ Paintball Supplies, Manic, JT, Tippmann, Warped, the Scottish Warriors, and SWASP for their generous donations of prizes.

paintball fieldpubfrom the to the

The Warren Wood Rangers (WWR) have just been voted UK Scenario Team of the Year 2009, having been previously voted UK Scenario Breakthrough Team of the Year in 2008. Since first playing paintball as a bunch of blokes from the pub in the summer of 2006, you could say we’ve come a long way in a short time. Our achievements should give hope to anyone sitting in the pub reading this - that if a bunch of drunken bums like ourselves can do it, anyone can. This is how we did it...

Our start in paintball can be accredited to one man, Charlie Benstead. In June 2006 he asked us one evening in the pub if we fancied trying a bit of paintball. Naturally, it sounded like a good idea, so we went. It was the first time trying the sport for many of us, with others only having played maybe a couple of times before at birthdays and the like.

After the first day’s play, out of the 20 or so who first came from the pub, many of us were instantly hooked. We continued to play when we could and many of us started buying the equipment and all the bits needed to play without rental gear. After a couple of outings, Charlie said to us something along the lines of “you lot should start a team, I guarantee you the paintball world has seen nothing like you.”

So we did. We formed The Redbourn Rangers.

We played at a site in Hertford Heath, ran at the time by Charlie. Most of the time when we played, although it was a walk-on, we were usually the only attendees. This is where we learnt how to play. It was quite a different day out to your average walk-on.

Instead of playing the usual games, since we were the only people playing, Charlie

had us doing many different things, we used to do 1 v 1’s, 2 v 2’s and all vs all games. This teaches you a completely different way to play the game. One of the things we were also guaranteed to do every time we played was a game at the end of the day where everyone takes on everyone, and there are no lives. You keep playing until you can’t take the pain anymore, or until you run out of paint. We always ran out of paint. This is where the Warren Wood Walk originated.

We continued playing at Hertford Heath for many months, completely unaware that scenario paintball even existed. Then early in 2007 the site closed down. We thought that was it, the end of our paintball playing.

The next stage, in true Ranger style, emerged from a very drunken Saturday night in the pub. Itching to play again, we rang Charlie who was by now working at a different site, Warren Wood Paintball. We met Tim Lowe, owner and operator of WWP, played a day mixed in with rental players, and by the end of it, we knew we’d found somewhere else to play.

Via Tim, we found out about scenario paintball and this is when we attended our first big game, Staargate 2007. Anyone who was there in the evening prior to the game will remember the state of us all. Camping, Beer and Paintball. We had found our calling.

As time went on, we secured sponsorship with Tim and WWP, became the Warren Wood Rangers, lost and gained team members, drank a lot more beer, played a hell of a lot more paintball, and met a lot more like-minded people who we now consider great friends. We won a couple of awards too...

So there is hope out there for anyone. If you’re sitting in the pub wondering what to do with yourself while hungover in the morning, get out and play some paintball - we did and we’ve never looked back. n

Deep in the Midland’s countryside just outside

Birmingham, there’s a revolution happening at National

Paintball Fields. Players are now demanding more bang for their buck, and that’s exactly what they get at NPF’s Diamond Wars. Whether you’re new to paintball, or a veteran of the field, there’s something in the 220 acre site that suits every type of player.

Diamond Wars is a relatively new innovation being offered at NPF for the discerning woodland player, which over the course of its two year life has constantly evolved and adapted.

Ged Green, owner of NPF, explains: “Over the first season it was mainly regular site players who were attending the event, however this year, the word has started to spread and now we have teams travelling from far and wide to get a piece of the action.”

Set in a fictional world deep in the jungle of the Democratic Republic of the Corimbe, where thermo scans revealed large quantities of precious minerals deep beneath

the surface of the jungle, the game is based around two corporations who are determined to gain control of the region and its pickings at all costs. The Hoffmann Minex Corporation of Europe hired a group of mercenaries to do their dirty work, while the US Diamond Exports flew in their own elite squad to secure the region’s natural resources, estimated to yield billions of US Dollars.

The beauty of Diamond Wars is that each month, the same groups of

friends and allies battle it out for the HMC or USDE, which drives tensions deeper over every episode. Since the series began last year, word has spread, numbers have grown and it now attracts over 200 players each month, allowing for the full site to be used exclusively for Diamond Wars.

Following in the footsteps of George Shaffer of Delta Paintball Productions, Ged created an online forum for the players to discuss tactics for the next episode. Establishing team-based chat rooms, players get together to trash talk, boast, scheme and plot; all the while fuelling their resolve to play next month’s event.

DiamondWars

“The forums play a huge part in Diamond Wars success,” Ged says. “It’s all friendly banter, but it adds an edge to the game play when people get to know each other prior to the events. The forums are alive with chatter 24 hours a day!”

Money is won or lost during the day via completing various missions, which run every half hour. There is a mix of hold and control missions, ambushes, retrieval and even demolitions! Teams can purchase air strikes, extra medics, or if needed, intelligence on the enemy’s position or current mission.

“It’s like playing a real life video game,” comments one young player, “but far more tiring!”

Realism is just one of the cogs to Diamond Wars success, and combined with the host of props at NPF, including villages, downed helicopters, a huge walk-in temple and vehicles, it all equates to paintball on a huge scale. And with every acre in play, the various game areas used

on standard days at NPF are woven together creating a patchwork of game zones that complement each other.

So what’s the plan for season 3 of Diamond Wars?

“Bigger and better,” Ged says. “We’re constantly working on fresh ideas to keep it interesting. We’re looking at adding another large structure to the game zone ready for the start of the new season, as well as the introduction of some rather fancy new technology, allowing commanders to track their squads using GPS, as well as the use of loudspeaker radio systems in the HQs to allow commanders to keep track of all their team’s radio frequencies.

“I really want to make Diamond Wars something special and encourage both new and experienced players to pay us a visit this year.”

If you haven’t given Diamond Wars a try, it’s time to get booked in!

the 2010 UKPSF conFeRence iS on! After some doubt as to whether it would go ahead due to a lack of uptake after the economic downturn, sites have responded to Steve Bull’s urgent plea and the conference is on.

The two day event will take place at the Chesford Grange Hotel near Kenilworth in Warwickshire on 16th and 17th March.

Steve has reduced the 24 hour delegate rate from £160 to £140 per person and the twin room rate from £270 to £250. The trade stand rate has been reduced from £200 to £175 and the day delegate rate remains the same at £55.

There will be 20 trade stands at the event exhibiting plenty of paintball gear as well as stands selling site-related gear so if you are looking at buying new equipment, this will be a great opportunity to talk to the experts. There will also be talks on current issues and a chance to network with other site operators.

For more details, or to book in, call Steve on 0845 130 4252 or email [email protected]

dUty oF caRe Steve Bull has recently reminded the UKPSF sites that they have a duty of care to their customers.

In the past six months, Steve has received five complaints to the UKSPF from customers who claim to have been subject to excessive shots or injury due to so-called punish shootings or game play that targets individuals such as stags or birthday boys. All these actions have resulted in complaints to local authorities, health and safety officers and even the police.

Steve says: “I understand and appreciate that ten years ago, some of these actions may have been considered all part of a day out, but that is probably not acceptable now. As a site owner, you have a duty of care to your customers and you are responsible for the actions of your staff. When a group requests a stag game, it may seem ok at the time, but it’s amazing how memories of what happened change when someone gets home and counts the bruises.”

2010 RateS evalUation The Valuation Office Agency is looking into the rates paid by paintball sites and the UKPSF has engaged the services of Andrew Boulter at Messrs Underwoods in Northampton to provide clarification to member sites.

If a rental agreement is not available to base a rates valuation on then the Valuation Agency are requesting to see the accounts of the business in order to make a rateable value assessment.

One site recently reported that the Valuation Office had increased their rates to 8% of turnover which is clearly not the way a rateable value should be assessed. If you have any issues with this, Steve Bull advises that you contact Andrew Boulter or Sue Kitson at Underwoods on 01604 404060. They will charge a fee to act on your behalf but if your rates become based on turnover, they may save you money!

FIELD OPS

Paintball site operators need to be on their toes this year as the UKPSF will be sending out mystery shoppers!

Early in 2010 the UKPSF is planning a meeting of volunteers who will

be visiting sites to play as rental customers. A confidential report will be supplied to the site. Steve Bull says that only UKPSF accredited venues and any site where a member of the public has made a complaint will be visited.

If you are a site owner and don’t want mystery shoppers attending your site, let Steve know but be aware that your accredited status could be at risk if you’re not willing to take part.

SWorld at WarFour men from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, have turned their hobby into a profession by opening a paintballing site in Great Wenham, Colchester.

Adam and Rob Byster, Paul Blunden and Darren Chirico launched their site after years of paintballing for fun at the weekends.

The entrepreneurs, each from different professional backgrounds including IT, the automotive industry and air conditioning engineering, are an example of how even in this tough economic climate, determination and team work has enabled them to start up their very first business and be their own boss.

Rob Byster said: “We are all very passionate about paintballing and have been good friends for over 20 years so it made sense for us to go into business together. It was a challenge getting the site off the ground and at times it was a real test of our friendship but we are so proud to have turned these pipe dreams into reality.”

The World at War venue has land both indoors and outdoors, so people can take part in the summer right through to winter. What makes the site different is that the game zones are designed to put you right in the middle of the action so players are assured value for money.

The indoor reception has excellent facilities and the site uses Tippmann 98 custom, semi-automatic paintball markers.

Powerball Limited would like to congratulate Skirmish in Nottingham for their successful charity event in support of Action for Heroes.

Powerball was represented at the event by salesman Richard Thornton, who joined the Nottingham team for a frenetic day’s woodsball and hyperball activity before presenting Powerball’s contribution of thirty cases of Shield paintballs.

Richard’s team came a close second on the day but the real winners were Action for Heroes who, through the hard work of Skirmish and the generous donations of several companies including Powerball, are set to receive more than £2500 following the event.

Use your pension to grow your businessAlso part of Jelf Group plc, Manson Financial Services can provide solutions to many of the financial problems that businesses are facing in the current climate.

As the credit crunch continues to bite many businesses are suffering cash flow problems or experiencing banks reducing the availability of loans or increasing the cost of borrowing.

Many of Manson’s clients have asked whether a business can use a pension scheme to fund major purchases. Indeed, by using a “Self Invested Personal Pension” (SIPP) or a “Small Self Administered Scheme” (SSAS) businesses can use money in their pensions to expand or in certain circumstances to generate working capital.

Individuals can also run their own schemes and keep the involvement of insurance companies to a minimum.

Under current rules, a SSAS enjoys greater investment freedom and is able to lend up to 50% of the pension scheme assets back to the sponsoring company which can use the funds for major purchases such as machinery or other capital developments.

The key advantages are:

• No need to approach the company’s bankers for additional loans

• Interest and capital are repaid to the directors’ pension scheme

• The minimum interest rate is 1% over bank base

• The company has ready access to funds

For example if the owners of a business had a total pension fund of £100,000 (this could be by transferring existing plans or making new contributions) they could borrow up to £50,000 at base +1%pa for up to 5 years.

Using a SSAS means that, in certain circumstances a company can make a contribution to their scheme and receive tax relief, borrowing up to 50% back at advantageous interest rates.

Obviously these investments are not suitable for everyone and you should remember that the primary purpose of a pension scheme is to provide for you in your retirement, however it is clear that the imaginative use of a pension scheme can help businesses prosper.

Manson Financial Services is a long established independent financial planner and is able to offer advice on pensions

and all other areas of financial planning. To arrange a meeting to review any current arrangements, and discuss how you can plan more effectively in the future please contact Rob Higginbotham on

ANDy NEWbERRy

When did you start playing paintball? When I was 12 years old. I soon after became a member at my local club, Gotcha and I just couldn’t get enough of wearing my Dad’s old army garb and running around playing bush-ball. Years later I stumbled upon UKScenario.com and was introduced to scenario paintball. I was gob-smacked to find so many guys and gals who were just as hopelessly addicted to our beloved sport / hobby. Soon after, I joined the SPS (great bunch of guys) and have enjoyed participating in the majority of scenario games in one form or another.

What was the best scenario game you’ve ever played? It has to be the recent Winter Assault by Bunker Productions. Asher and his crew have all the components to make a good scenario brilliant - awesome and unique location, well thought-out missions, inventive props and game triggers such as riot shields, RPGs, spotters, snipers, C4 explosives and hostages. With proactive and brave marshals and a generous helping of a friendly and casual atmosphere, you have the perfect ingredients for a winning scenario.

How did you start taking photos at Big Games? I started taking photos at these events when I contacted Ian ‘Cambo’ Richardson regarding the Wild Geese game - Islas Malvinas. I explained that I couldn’t afford to play but that I wanted to be involved somehow. So I offered to

take some photos and well, the rest is history.

What’s the most challenging part of covering Big Games? Trying to take at least one photo of everybody attending would have to be the biggest challenge. It’s quite difficult to keep track of who you have and have not photographed, especially at the really big games such as North vs South where I only know 10% of the players. You also have to take the players’ stealth and strategy into consideration. As a player, I wouldn’t appreciate it if I’ve been crawling through rivers and mud for 15 minutes trying to work up to a flanking position, only to have a photographer saunter up and take 15 photos with flash, announcing to the defending team that there is something of interest in my general area. Sometimes I have to be really inconspicuous and circumspect when shooting.

What’s all this about a 2009 yearbook? The UK Scenario community has progressed to such a point that Tony (Martello) from the Pups Scenario team and I thought it prudent to work on a UK Scenario 2009 annual. This will be published as a year book, recapping on what the scenario community got up to last year. Every major scenario game will be photographically documented as well as a page on each of the most active scenario teams (the teams that played at least a few events last year). Hopefully this book will not only allow us all to reminisce the great times had in 2009 but also allow players and teams to get to know each other a little better, bring the community together. PBUK will obviously know about any updates, so watch this space.
