Introduction Digital media includes digital images, video, 3D images, both static and animated, and much more. This Level 1 Digital Media Module will focus on the creation and manipulation of digital images. Adobe Photoshop created by the Adobe Corporation is considered by many to be the industry standard for the creation and manipulation of digital images. This module is designed to utilize Photoshop Elements, a user-friendly, entry level version of Photoshop, and a perfect choice for entry into the fun, innovative, and creative world of digital images.

Photoshop Elements OverviewPhotoshop Elements has two parts; Organizer and Photo Editor. Organizer is software that helps organize, arrange, group, and label photos. Photo Editor allows for the alteration and combining of digital images. This module will only use Photo Editor.

Within Photo Editor, there are several tabs at the top of the screen. The “Expert” tab provides you with the most freedom and customization options. All of this module will use the features found within the “Expert” tab. Opening ImagesWithin Photoshop Elements Editor, left click the “File” button in the top left corner of the screen. A dropdown menu will appear. Click the “Open” button. The teacher will provide you with the location of the “Class Activity 1” image. Navigate to that location, and open the appropriate image. Saving Images To prevent saving over the original “Class Activity 1” image, you need to save the image to a location only you or your group will have access to. Your teacher will provide you with this location.

To save your activity to a separate location click “File” at the top, right corner, and choose “Save As.” With your teacher’s help, navigate to the location where you will save your image.

At the bottom of the Save As window is a “File name” textbox. You can enter the new name of the image file. Your teacher will suggest an appropriate name for the image file. Change the “Save as Type” to “Photoshop (*.PSD;*.PDD). The PSD file type is the best way to save your progress when you are working in Photoshop. When the image is complete you will convert the image to a more appropriate format.

ScenarioYou have been hired to design art for a new hotel called The Dallah International. The manager of the hotel, Mr. Ahmed, wants to decorate the lobby with dallah themed art that mimic famous works of art. Mr. Ahmed wants you to create a work of art that mimics Pop Art. Pop Art was a movement where elements of popular culture were used as inspiration. This challenged traditional art ideals, and created some memorable pieces of art. Andy Worhol is a fine example of a Pop artist. He is best known for his prints and paintings of consumer goods and celebrities. He pioneered compositions and techniques that emphasized repetition, color and the mechanization of art.Mr. Ahmed specifically wants you to focus on the art work of Andy Worhol. He shows you a few examples of Warhol’s work. The examples are shown below. The company also provides you with a picture of the company’s, famous dallah. It has been in the hotel owner’s family for many generations, and it was used as a model for the dallahs used to decorate the hotel. He would like you to use this picture as inspiration for you work of art. Mr. Ahmed wants you to submit a draft work of art to him before he approves a larger work of art.
