ABSTRACT The focus of this unit is learning specific technology skills appropriate for 4 th grade students. Each lesson integrates the acquisition and use of computer skills with Core Knowledge subjects. These thematic lessons incorporate the use of computers while covering Science, Language Arts and History & Geography. Areas of Core Knowledge that are taught include: the food chain, fossils, cells, writing and research, punctuation, and mountain ranges. II. OVERVIEW A. Concept Objectives 1. These thematic lessons incorporate the use of computers while covering Science, Language Arts and History & Geography. Areas of Core Knowledge that are taught include: the food chain, fossils, cells, writing and research, punctuation, and mountain ranges.

Students will reinforce their understanding of food chains. 4. Students will reinforce their understanding of cells. 5. Students will reinforce their understanding of punctuation. 6. Students will reinforce their understanding mountain ranges. 7. Students will reinforce their understanding of fossils. 8. Students will research a person or event in Black History.

(3) Distinguish between Save and Save As – 2.04 B. Materials

C. Key Vocabulary 1. Touch pad: internal mouse built into laptop

D. Procedures/Activities 1. Explain to students that there are special classroom rules when using the

computers. For example, no talking when handing out laptops. 2. Hand out note cards with students’ log-ins. Make sure that each student has a

pencil on their desk before handing out laptops. 3. Model for students how to carry laptops with both hands back to their desks. 4. Using student numbers, hand out laptops from mobile carts. Instruct students to

wait for directions before opening their laptops. 5. Model how to unlatch and open the laptop. Instruct students to do the same. 6. Model how to turn on the laptop. Instruct students to do the same. 7. Explain to students that their login consists of a user name and password. Their

user name is on their note cards, they will choose their password. 8. Instruct students to write their password down on their note cards. 9. Instruct students to type in their user name and password in the login screen and

press enter on their keyboards. This will bring students to their desktop. 10. Explain to students that sometimes they will have to ask for help when using the

computers. Instruct students to close their mouth and raise their hand if they need help.

11. Explain to the students the difference between Click and Double Click. 12. Using the LCD projector, show students how to locate and open the websites for

4th grade file from the My Computer icon on their desktop. 13. Using the LCD projector, show students the difference between Save and Save As. 14. Explain to the students the difference between the different drives on the school

computers. For example, the H drive is the projects drive, and the Z drive is a place for them to store their own files.

15. Instruct the students to use the save as function to save a copy of the websites for 4th grade in their Z drive.

16. Instruct students to close all programs and folders on their computers using the x in top right hand corner of each window.

17. Instruct students to shut down computers using the Start button in the lower left hand corner of their desktop.

18. When all laptops have completely shut down instruct students to close their laptops.

19. Using student numbers collect laptops and note cards. 20. Save note cards for future use.

E. Assessment/Evaluation 1. Teacher observation of student conduct expected of them when using the school

D. Procedures/Activities 1. Distribute printed copies of the Mountain Range Worksheet to students. 2. Explain to students that the worksheet is intended to help guide their research. 3. Explain the directions on the worksheet. 4. Using the LCD Projector, show students how to open MS Encarta beginning with

the Start button and how to type in their chosen mountain range in the search box. 5. Instruct students to begin their research and to record their notes on the worksheet.

a) An extension of this activity could be to have students write a paragraph about the mountain range they have researched using the notes recorded on their worksheet.
