WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THE RIVER MOVES?

The Choluteca Bridge in Honduras was built to withstand the worst hurricanes. When Hurricane Mitch struck in 1998, it dumped 75 inches of rain in less than four days and destroyed 150 Honduran bridges, but not the Choluteca Bridge.

While the bridge itself was in near

perfect condition, a wider view revealed that the roads on either end of the bridge had completely vanished, leaving no visible trace of their prior existence. In fact, that powerful storm had moved the river right out from underneath the Choluteca

Bridge. And so the bridge now spans dry ground. The people of Honduras have a lovely, sturdy, and resilient bridge…to nowhere. This edifice of modern engineering found itself no longer over the river for which it was built. It can no longer serve its purpose, so tourists come by to gawk at it.

What do you do when the river moves?

The church was built as a robust and hardy institution with the best social and religious engineering available. A lot of time, energy, and money has been invested in building this great edifice. Generations of investment. And it has served well. It spanned the river of life, nourishing our faith, guiding our way, healing our wounds, and empowering our service.

However, we live in a time of change and society has jumped the old banks where the church had constructed itself. So now, we are find ourselves with a lovely well-built bridge: a bridge of brick and stone and stained glass… a bridge of thought, prayer and practice….. a bridge of hymn books, choirs, and organ music. But alas, the river is no longer where it should be and the edifice seems to be losing its relevance to those beyond its walls.

Can we dredge the river back to its original place? Can we find enough excavators to force the water back into its rightful channel? Perhaps, once the river is back in place, our bridge will be relevant again. How do we move a river? Maybe, if we are patient, it will realize its loss and find its way back under our bridge.

This may seem like an insane approach. We know it is impractical to move a river or hope that it will move itself. Perhaps it is a grace to wake up and to find the words to pray, “Almighty God, as followers of your Son and stewards of your church, we are befuddled and anxious about the changing course of the river of life for so many people, for our community, nation, and world. May we face this together, in Jesus’ name. Amen”

This ‘bridge experience’ is echoing in all denominations of the Christian church. It is somehow helpful to discover that others have written about this Honduran bridge in reference to health care and educational institutions. It comes as no surprise that the river is moving for everyone.

What do you do when the river moves? During the coming year, our Session will be exploring how the Bon Air Presbyterian Church can more effectively service as a bridge that reaches out to our neighbors and community with the Good News of the Gospel. It will certainly be an exciting year! Blessings, Pastor Janet

10:00 a.m. SUMMER WORSHIP

He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished,

one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say, Father in heaven …”

Luke 11: 1-2a

We say the Lord’s Prayer every week during worship. Some of us say the Lord’s Prayer during our daily personal prayer time. There are times when we may say the Lord’s Prayer when we can think of nothing else to pray. It is a foundational prayer, a prayer we learned in our childhood. It is so familiar to us that we can say the words without even thinking. However, John Calvin admonished believers to take care that our prayers do not become rote words that are spoken without grasping their power and significance.

Join us this summer as we refresh our knowledge and seek to form a deeper understanding of the meaning and consequence of the Lord’s Prayer.

INCREDIBLE IMPACT ON HOUSING

In 2010 RISC leaders found that 38,000 Richmond families were paying 50% of their income on housing—an unaffordable rate that often leaves families scrambling to cover other necessary costs. We urged City Council and Mayor Jones to fund a proven solution, an Affordable Housing Trust Fund. City leaders made commitments in 2015 and since then $2.2 million from the city has gone

into the Trust Fund. The Trust Fund attracted $78 million from other public and private funding sources, for a total of $80.2

million of affordable housing developments and services! Over 1,100 families, seniors, and formerly homeless individuals have now been assisted with safe, affordable housing. Many new housing developments are already under construction!

Our congregation played a crucial part in making this happen! Many shared concerns about housing costs and safety in house meetings, and we remained persistent until we achieved a solution!

Last year, our church re-established our membership in ACTS (Area

Congregations Together in Service). We support that ministry through

contributions made to the church’s Pastor’s Emergency Fund and have

referred neighbors for service. Following are excerpts from a recently

received letter from ACTS.

Thank you is a good way to begin this letter.

Because of your commitment, our neighbors in financial crisis are able to live sustainable, self-sufficient and dignified lives. Funds, support, and other resources are given to those you refer to our dedicated caseworkers. We are grateful for you and for the example you set on what it means to be a faithful steward.

Last year, ACTS added to its base of 48 partners by gaining 8 new referring partners. The organization expended $200,000 in rent, mortgage, utility assistance and case management services. Because of YOU, 674 people (287 of them children) were prevented from becoming homeless. With your support, 291 families received financial assistance and 472 additional households received referrals to workforce development programs, social services and benefits to help support their ability to remain in their homes. 98% of those who have received services through ACTS remain housed for 12 months or longer. That means your partnership is not only important to us but it is transformative for the hundreds of men, women and children faced with the burden and stress of losing their housing.

In our community, most homeless services programs are unable to assist until after a person has entered the homelessness system. ACTS seeks to be proactive in preventing hard-working people, who unexpectedly face financial crisis, from becoming homeless by providing the short-term financial support and resources they need until they are able to get back on their feet.

WE’RE ON OUR WAY

Many of our youth and adults are on their way to Montreat this month to attend Montreat Youth Conference and to grow in their faith together. Thank you to all who have supported their efforts to get there! Please keep our youth and adults in your prayers: Kyle Stevens, Ryan Stevens, Jacob Smouse, Evan Smouse, Calvin Hurlbert, Kate Hurlbert, Dylan Paz, Thomas Jackson, Sara Hinterlong, Erin Fisher, Mark Stevens (chaperone), and Alise Anzleone (chaperone).

Acolyte Ministry Needs Adult Volunteers

Do you enjoy having acolytes at the 11:00 service? If so, please read on!

We are in need of several new volunteers in order to keep this ministry active:

Acolyte Helpers (several needed) – This is a quick and simple way to help when you’re already coming to church for worship. You commit to coming at 10:45 to help the acolytes on Sundays for one or two months of your choice between September and June.

Acolyte Coordinator – This is a rewarding opportunity to get to know our great kids and teens and enable them to participate regularly in the worship service. You would schedule acolytes monthly, write brief acolyte blurb for newsletter monthly, mail/email scheduled acolytes reminder of routine, instruct new acolytes on routines, and attend Worship Ministry Team meetings 4th Tuesday evenings.

Please prayerfully consider these meaningful and rewarding opportunities. To volunteer, contact Elaine Ogburn at [email protected] or 804-320-4514. THANK YOU!!

Associate Pastor Nominating Committee

The APNC had its first meeting on June 8. We met with General Presbyter Cason Rhyne, Gordon Mapes and Pastor Janet. Carson presented us with an overview of the entire process and explained the mechanics involved in drafting the Ministry Information Form (MIF). The MIF is the equivalent of the church’s resume. It is a summary of the personality, mission and work of BAPC. Insiders liken the search process to online dating. The church posts its MIF and candidates post their Personal Information Form (PIF). Then each reviews the other’s profile to see if there is any interest in a relationship.

The APNC has set a meeting schedule and begun work on the MIF. APNC members are Alise Anzelone, Louise Ensley, Kathy Sestak, Ernie Wright, Ed Callear, Beth Unroe, and Kent Pankey.

Celebrate Birthdays by supporting the Bon Air Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund. Make a gift equal to your age or in honor or memory of a friend or loved one’s birthday. The Fund was established to enable members and friends of the congregation to express their gratitude to God, their appreciation of the saints who established and built the church, and their desire to leave a legacy to future generations that will carry on the mission of the church.

Year after year your gift will help to support Outreach ministries and benevolences, Building and capital improvements, and New or special church programs.

To make your gift, drop your check in the offering plate or mail it to the Church. Be sure to add ‘Endowment Birthday Fund’ in the memo line.

Happy Birthday!

OUTREACH July, 2017 PAGE 9

June is past and July is upon us. Vacations and other activities are planned or underway. Our church has begun its summer schedule. And Christian stewards are reminding themselves that stewardship continues even as we head toward Labor Day.

We need to be especially mindful of our commitment to giving to the worship and mission of Bon Air Presbyterian Church. The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that November and December are the biggest months for giving in the United States. But for those lazy days of summer? Not so much.

But the work on our church continues on during the summer.

• The need of the agencies we support through our benevolences does not diminish this time of year. • We have dispatched a team to West Virginia for a mission trip to help in an area hit by flooding in

June 2016. • Our building will be the center of much activity during the vacation months for things like Music

Camp, Boy Scouts and community meetings. • The church’s youth will travel to Montreat for worship and fellowship in that wonderful place. • Session teams and committees meet to discuss how we can further God’s presence our area.

Christian stewards are well aware of summer needs, as well as being aware of their own need to give throughout the year. For the Christian steward, the spirituality of gratitude to God is part of their everyday lives and motivates their generous heart.

You will receive your pledge giving statement for January – June in your email inbox soon.

The giving statements will be sent to the email mail address the church has on file, but only one statement will be sent to each pledging unit. The document will be an attachment from the address [email protected]. You may have to adjust you spam filter or check you spam folder after the initial mailing to be sure you receive the statements in the future.

If you DO NOT want to receive you giving statements by email or did not receive one, please contact Ted McCormack, Financial Secretary, at 378-0323 or [email protected].

Members who do not have an email address, however, will continue to receive their statement by regular mail.
