PRESIDENT-ELECT’S FY-15 forecast – As Presented by Anne
Roeper, CSI, CCPR at the Celebration “I've often worked in the context of "themes" for parties and business meetings and the GO CSI Recognition Evening was no exception. I chose „Teeing Off For A Great Year GO CSI!‟ As we tee up and start our planning we also position the ball to get our board and committees in place. And we take a swing. We may hook and send our ball and our ideas for meetings and events way out there. We could slice and fail to pull an idea
together. So we have opportunities to reposition: straighten an arm, shift our body to the left and try new ideas different from what we've done in the past. But we strive for the perfect drive that sends our balling sailing down the middle of the fairway and we develop an idea that succeeds in exciting a crowd, making a little profit, or drawing in a new member. As President, I may feel occasionally like the lone golfer out dragging my pull cart, wading my way through 18 holes. And although golf is not really a team sport per se, I find that GO CSI is a little like my favorite golf format: "the scramble". We are small groups of people, playing a long game with water hazards of waning membership and sand traps of hectic schedules. But we use our best ball and best ideas to finish the hole better than we can individually. And just maybe our hard work will pay off and we will realize that Hole In One!”

been focused toward the important material. AND CONGRATULATIONS – To the other Central Florida Professionals for their achievement in attaining their CDT Certification; Mr. Darrell L. The early registration deadline is July 31, and the final deadline is August 31. Learn more, or register now. WHY I GOT CERTIFIED [AS A PRODUCT REP] Bill Coady, CSI, CCPR My boss made me do it! Although he is no longer my boss and we now work for different companies, I still thank him for making it a priority for his sales force to earn their CCPR certification. Although times have changed, one constant is the boatload of benefits I received when I studied for the CCPR exams. The learning process alone was worth it. Going into the study courses, I knew I didn't "know it all" but I thought I understood commercial construction. The CCPR education really helped me grasp the bigger picture, the whole construction process. That education and the consistent continuing education opportunities through CSI, has helped make me a better resource for the construction community. Bottom line is that I sell more products and generate more profits for my company and made my life as a rep much more enjoyable. Earn your CCPR. You'll never regret it.

LEADERSHIP – “Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is
expected.” Steve Jobs
SERC LEADERSHIP SESSION - Matt Fochs, CSI, Community Development Manager at the Institute, presented a leadership session titled, Vision, Mission & Strategic Plans that challenged our Southeast Region chapters. Pulling from the current trend of the Institute Board, the session focused on the process of moving from an Operational Board, one that focuses on immediate fixes and the process in which to do so, to a Visionary Board, one that stays true to a vision and bases decisions on a clear understanding of its mission. While the Institute does not have a written vision statement, its core values can be summed up to state, “CSI's vision is to see facilities constructed and operated more accurately, efficiently, safely, and at a lower cost to their owners and users as a result of CSI members' technical expertise and contributions to the building information and project delivery body of knowledge.” This vision is line with CSI's mission, yet looks beyond the core aspects of what CSI can do, to address the entire industry as a whole. This difference of vision (open-ended, lofty goal) versus mission (long-reaching goal to "rally the troops") is a key part of understanding how a visionary board works and strategically functions - continuously aiming to reach its vision by making decisions that relate to its mission. While this method of strategic action can lead to a successful visionary board, it is important to note that vision + mission does NOT = strategic plans. Instead, strategic plans can be thought of as the road map that leads a board to implement ideas and programs that focus on missions in the goal of reaching their vision. Matt indicated that, for chapters that may be thinking that it IS time to develop or revisit their strategic plans, they should remember that a strategic plan can be made up of, or focused on, any number of different documents, statements, and plans such as a vision statement, a mission statement, a set of values statements, list of goals, planning strategies and tactics, an implementation, and/or operating plan. “If you do
not know if your chapter has any of these items, it may be time to look to your board members to start the process of
crafting a long-term mission statement and strategic plan,” he said. While the Institute is in the beginning stages of renewing its own strategic plan, chapters may want to develop their own mission and vision that focuses on their specific goals, needs, members, and community “so long as these statements do not contradict the institute
statements”. Additionally, Chapters may want to start thinking about creating their own set of values regarding membership, standards and formats, professional development (education and certification), and professional practice tools. He was pretty clear when he stated that, “If your chapter already has a clearly defined vision, mission and
strategic plan, or you are planning to craft them in the coming year, you may want to also consider the idea of
annually evaluating your board as a way to ensure a continued focus is placed on these visionary tools.” Reference was made to BoardSource, a national non-profit dedicated to the betterment of board management, has developed a set of 12 core values that boards should look to address. The values identified can be a great starting point for focused evaluation of board member selection, actions, and operation. The values consist of: constructive partnership, mission driven, strategic thinking, culture of inquiry, independent-mindedness, transparency, compliance with integrity, sustaining resources, results-oriented, intentional board practices, continuous learning, and revitalization. Thought provoking for any CSI Chapter Board; ours for sure.

2015 I-CODES – The International Code Council (ICC) announced earlier this month that the 2015 I-Codes have been completed and will be available in June of this year. In answer to the question, "why is the code updated every 3 years?" the stated goal of the ICC code development 3-year cycle code development 3-year cycle is to respond to technological developments and requested changes by interested parties. The changes within this past cycle addressed updates in the energy code and the existing building code among others. For those that wish to pre-order copies of the 2015 codes, the ICC is making them available through the end of May at a discounted price. WEEP NOW OR WEEP LATER – Thirty years ago when the author, John Koester, applied for, and was issued, his first patent; a utility patent for a weep system, the main "claim" of the patent was the forming of the bottom side of a bed joint of mortar to create tunnels or channels into the cores or cavities of masonry walls. In the process of researching information for the patent's content, something became very apparent; many of the masonry industry's accepted "rules of the road" or "standard practices" for weeping a wall had no scientific basis! Read the online version now! There are details.

NEW PRODUCTS – THE FUTURE IS NET ZERO, reports Paul Bertram, FCSI Lifetime Member & G O CSI Chapter former president. efficient products. But they offer more than just increased R-value – they have assessed the entire product lifecycle and want to tell us all about it in the most transparent way possible. They say that their first of its kind, ISO compliant, Environmental Product Declaration by UL Environment will do just that. Net Zero is where it’s at Net Zero Energy buildings, in the simplest terms, produce as much energy as they consume. Kingspan‟s insulated metal panels for walls and roofs are reported to be a cost effective step to this high performance goal, offering a building envelope with functionality and design possibility. The path to Net Zero is paved with achievable intentions Kingspan‟s long-term mission will see all their facilities achieve Net Zero energy consumption by 2020. As they continue to supply energy efficient products for net zero buildings in our community and beyond, they will remain transparent in their environmental reporting. And they say their focus on continuous improvement will never waver.
