Barton Healthcare has provided MEP design services for

numerous new and/or renovated general support ser-

vice projects including central sterile supply, laundry

and central utility plants. We understand the design chal-

lenges of the MEP systems associated with general sup-

port service areas and specifically consider the following:

- Future Capacity Requirements of the Campus

- Need for Continuous Facility Operation

- Maintenance and Service Requirements

- Emergency Preparedness Planning

GENERAL SUPPORT SERVICES

Barton Healthcare understands the importance of general support services in the day-to-day operation of a medical facility. We work closely with the facility’s planning and engineering groups to ensure that the MEP systems are designed to provide continuous operation as well as the flexibility to expand to

meet the changing needs of the campus.

General support services are at the heart of any healthcare facility’s operation. Barton Healthcare’s team of dedicated engineers and designers understands the critical nature of these facilities and the need for them to be designed for flexibility and long-term reliable operation. Whether planning a new central utility plant, or an expansion to a central UPS system, it is important that the design account for the projected future ca-pacity needs of the facility and consider on-going operation and maintenance require-ments. The best systems can quickly lose their value if they cannot be easily serviced and maintained. In addition to capacity considerations, it is also important that general support service area designs be aligned with the healthcare organization’s emergency preparedness plan. Consideration for adequate fuel oil storage and emergency utility connections can easily be overlooked in the planning process. Through close collabo-ration with the hospital’s facility and engineering staff during the design process, our team is able to define the appropriate operational and equipment parameters to best

meet the needs of the campus and the healthcare organization’s mission.

It is important to have an engineering partner who understands the healthcare industry and the unique demands that are placed on general support service facilities. Barton Healthcare’s experienced team will take the time to understand your facility and pro-

vide you with engineering solutions that support your operational goals.

PinnacleHealth West Shore Hospital | Mechanicsburg, PA

New Central Plant$2.3 million | February 2014

Barton Healthcare provided mechanical and plumbing design for a new central plant at the Pin-nacle Health West Shore Hospital including 2 high pressure steam boilers and the associated feed water system. The project also included two, 525-ton chillers and associated cooling towers and a variable primary chilled water pumping system. High pressure steam and condensate as well as chilled water supply and return mains were routed from the central plant to the hospital through a new underground utility tunnel. The central plant provides all heating and cooling infrastruc-ture for the new 190,000 square foot, 100 bed hospital facility. The central plant was designed

for future expansion of one additional boiler, chiller and associated equipment.

Central Utility Plant Upgrades$3.6 million | September 2012

Barton Healthcare provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services to support an up-grade/expansion of the hospital’s central utility plant. The project included the replacement of ex-isting boilers, DA tank, condensate receiver and feed water pumps with two, 500 HP boilers and associated equipment. The project also included the replacement of the existing 25,000 gallon underground fuel storage tank as well as the replacement of an existing chiller with a 600 ton cen-trifugal machine and associated tower replacement, pump/piping upgrades and a new electrical service to feed the mechanical room equipment. A portion of the project was funded through a Re-development Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Gettysburg Hospital | Gettysburg, PA

Boiler and Chiller Plant Upgrades$800,000 | July 2008

Barton Healthcare provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design for central plant upgrades at Gettysburg Hospital including the replacement of 3 existing high pressure steam boilers and associ-ated feed water system. The project also included the addition of one, 300-ton chiller and cooling tower to expand the existing chilled water plant’s capacity. The upgrades were constructed in prepa-ration for a future 42,000 square-foot overbuild addition and 7,500 square feet expansion project.

Communications Center $2.2 million | March 2009

Barton Healthcare provided mechanical and electrical design services for this 30,000 square-foot project. The project included replacement of two UPS units, power distribution units, and a new building lighting protection system and a replacement 2,000 amp electrical services. Five computer room air conditioning units were designed to provide tight temperature and humidity

control of the renovated communications center.
