Third Sunday after Mass
Well, now what? Now that the Packers
are out of contention for the Super Bowl,
the snow is almost all gone, (and came
back again as I wrote this) and half of our
US Citizens want to change the election
results, let’s just fast-forward to Spring so
we can all feel a little better. We know
that’s not possible and Spring will be here
soon enough. We can stop staring at the
dried guacamole that has been thrown at
our TV sets these past days and admit that
life is much more than football or politics.
In order to get over feeling powerless or
marginalized, and remember the much bigger
problems our world faces, I would like to
share something I read from a weekly post
called, “Sabbath Moments.”
This week I watched Queen of Katwe.
Queen of Katwe is the true story of Phiona
Mutesi, a junior chess champion from an
exceptionally poor neighborhood in Kampala,
Uganda's capital. We see not only African
poverty, but of the patterns—the scripts—
that reinforce hopelessness and despair. We
see those on the outside, looking in.
One day, she sees a game being
played on a board with strange pieces. Her
curiosity takes her to a local church where
missionary Robert Katende (David Oyelowo)
has set up a chess club. Phiona proves not
only curious, but prodigiously good. [As the
story goes on,] the students (who have
never been outside of their shantytown),
find themselves at a tournament held in a
private school for other elite schools.
In the school before the tournament, Coach
sees their anxiety, and tells them this
story…
The other day in the streets of Kampala,
I saw a skinny hungry dog chasing a cat.
He chased and chased and chased. Finally,
no luck, and the skinny dog collapses from
exhaustion. I asked the skinny dog why he
stopped chasing. He told me, Because, I
was only running for a meal. The cat was
running for its life. The story we carry
inside will determine our resolve.
It is no surprise then that this group of
young boys and girls, out of place and out
of sorts, a bundle of anxiety, wonder if they
even belong. They are sure they do not.
Why? Because their internal script tells
them so.
(Sabbath Moments; by Terry Hershey)
What is your “internal script” telling
you? Is it saying: “We’ve never been on this
road. This surely will end in doom and
gloom.” Then, that will be our target; that
will be our focus, our vision. I choose to
still believe that God has a great plan for
us. In spite of all the divisions we’ve seen
recently, we can do great things when
united as; one Nation, under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for ALL.
Jesus, I trust in you! Jesus, I trust
in you! Jesus, I trust in you!
Readings for the Week
Monday Heb 11:32-40/Mk 5:1-20
Tuesday Heb 12:1-4/Mk 5:21-43
Wednesday Heb 12:4-7, 11-15/Mk 6:1-6
Thursday Mal 3:1-4/Lk 2:22-40
Friday Heb 13:1-8/Mk 6:14-29
Saturday Heb 13:15-17, 20-21/Mk 6:30-34
Sunday Is 58:7-10/1 Cor 2:1-5/Mt 5:13-16
Join us next week as our readings’ focus is: “We are called to be salt and light for others.” As we continue in ordinary time, we are challenged to see it as a blessed opportunity to share and witness to others through the daily events of life. We are to be a light for others – illuminating the way, and salt for others – giving flavors to their lives: drawing them closer to God through the witness of our lives.

Email Bible Study
Are you interested in being part of a bible study – but don’t have the time to meet weekly? Check this out…
This spring, we will have a six-week study of the proph-ets. Every week, beginning the week of February 20, Joe Zenk will send out the assigned reading along with a number of questions for you to ponder and answer on your own. You won’t have to share them with anyone else as they are for your own spiritual growth. Then, at the end of the six weeks, the group is invited together to discuss their thoughts from the different prophets we will be studying. Don’t want to come to this gathering? You don’t have to. It’s that easy.
Interested? Sign up through Kim, Laura or Sue in our parish offices. Either call or send them an email. Look for your first email assignment the week of February 20.
Bishop Ricken’s Message About Catholic Schools My Dear Fellow Disciples in Catholic Education, Each year I look forward to the annual celebration of Na-tional Catholic Schools Week. From January 29 through February 4, 2017, we will acknowledge the formation of Jesus’ Disciples among our 55 Catholic schools across the Diocese of Green Bay. It is a time to celebrate our Catholic schools and all the supporters who contribute to this im-portant ministry of the Church. The national theme, Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service, summarizes the daily edu-cational context of our students’ lives as they learn about their faith while practicing a virtuous life and learn the skills for the 21st century. In partnership with our fami-lies, school and parish leadership, faculty, staff, volun-teers, and benefactors, our Catholic educational institu-tions encompass schools of discipleship formation devel-oping future leaders and moral citizens. As I travel these schools to celebrate the Holy Mass with each student body, I witness the core element of our Catholic schools: prayer and the development of a personal relationship with Jesus. This is the exceptionality of Catholic Educa-tion. Catholic schools of discipleship do not happen without investment. Parishes provide prayerful support and gen-erous contributions to provide the resources. Benefactors and alumni accept Catholic education as a primary mis-sion of the Church and provide generous sustenance. School leadership and faculty and staff ensure their own continual development of discipleship through annual adult catechesis and academic professional development. Parents share the responsibility to seamlessly infuse the faith life of their children into the daily fabric of home life. I am grateful to all who invest in Catholic schools as their efforts and support are a vital contribution to the future of the Church and our great nation. Please join me in praying for the gift of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Green Bay as we “Celebrate Catholic Schools Week 2017” with our 9,200 students, school and parish leaders, faculty and staff ! May God bless you for your continued sacrifices to ensure that our Catholic youth and their families build a lasting relationship with Jesus, as I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, The Most Reverend David L. Ricken, DD, JCL Bishop of Green Bay
