Welcome Breaking news

Keep an eye on your TV schedules for a new Channel 4 series all about us! The People’s Vet is a 20-episode series that focuses on the vital work we do day in, day out at our two Liverpool Pet Hospitals in Huyton (The Thomas Williams Centre) and Kirkdale (The Jeanne Marchig Centre).

The series charts the work of our team of vets, nurses and back-room colleagues and shows enough emotional and life-affirming stories to fill an entertaining, eventful, uplifting series with bags of emotion, drama, warmth and character. The series will have lots of stories to keep viewers hooked throughout each compelling 60-minute episode.

PDSA NEWS 02

Welcome to your spring edition of PDSA News and I hope you’re all enjoying this very special Centenary year.

I’m looking forward to an exciting and action-packed few months ahead. There’s something for everyone to get involved with. Whether that’s raising funds, helping us to become better known or engaging with supporters, we can all play our part.

I’ve said many times that we couldn’t do the things we do without our volunteers. So it’s great to be able to shout about their achievements through our Volunteer of the Year Awards 2017. It’s been another year of amazing entries and that made it even more difficult to choose a winner. But the judges were unanimous in their decisions.

We've also officially launched our fundraising appeal to build a new Manchester PDSA Pet Wellbeing Centre, tickets are selling well for our Pet Life ’18 family festival in a day and the new Channel 4 TV series The People’s Vet will help spread awareness of the vital work we do.

It won’t be long until Easter comes and in our Recovery Ward feature we tell the story of poor little Bailey who needed emergency treatment after eating two big bars of chocolate which is of course poisonous to dogs. Thankfully our vet team saved his life and isn’t that exactly what we’re here for – to save pets and change lives?

Have a wonderful springtime and enjoy this edition.

PDSA NEWS 04

Our news

A formerly heavy hound has been named biggest loser in PDSA Pet Fit Club – the UK’s largest pet slimming competition – after shedding an incredible 34% of his bodyweight in just six months.

Alfie the Beagle, from Middlesbrough, once weighed-in at a WHOPPING 4st 10lbs (30kg), - 67% over his ideal weight (2st 12lb/18kg). His health was at serious risk from his excess

pounds, but after pounding the streets and cutting back on the excess food, he’s lost a third of his bodyweight and WOWED the Pet Fit Club judges. He is now a much healthier 3st 1lb (19.7kg)

Each year, we help the country’s fattest pets take on a strict six-month diet and exercise challenge, specially tailored and overseen by our vets and nurses. Pet Fit Club helps our four-legged friends slim down,

and raises awareness of the serious health and welfare implications of pet obesity. Since its launch in 2005, Pet Fit Club has helped 79 dogs, 37 cats and 8 rabbits lose a total 71 stone – equivalent to a grand piano (or 16,000 doughnuts!)

The end of 2017 was a high point of the year for three of our colleagues who received the Edward Bridges Webb (EBW) Memorial Award – our highest honour.

The EBW was given to Moira Aitken, Vet Surgeon at New Cross PDSA Pet Hospital, the Philippa and George Adams Centre; Helen Crofts, Head Nurse at Cardiff PDSA Pet Hospital, the Marian and Christina Ionescu Centre and Glenda Chantry, HR Shared Services Manager at Head Office.

They all personify our values, combining expertise with understanding, working collaboratively and clearly being driven in their dedication.

The Edward Bridges Webb Memorial Award is usually only given to one inspiring individual employee who deserves to be recognised for their outstanding meritorius service to PDSA. But our Directors felt it was right to do something different in our Centenary year and to present the award to three inspiring individuals. The Award was

instigated in 1973 to keep alive the memory of Edward Bridges Webb who was our Chairman from 1951-1970.

The awards were presented last December.

Congratulations to them all.

And the winners are…

Got your tickets for Pet Life ’18?

It took much deliberation, debate, discussion and a whole day of judging but now the winners of the 2017 Volunteer of the Year Awards can be revealed.

Our awards recognise the devotion and commitment of our volunteers who play vital roles in our PDSA Pet Hospital, Shops, offices and Fundraising Groups. After the judging

Pet-loving music stars Kaiser Chiefs, Jessie J and The Vamps are all taking to the stage for our brand new charity festival to celebrate the nation’s love of pets and raise funds for their care. And there are still tickets available before the event gets under way on May 6th.

PDSA PetLife Festival ’18 is a festival in a day, designed for both music fans and pet-lovers alike, combining great music, entertainment and attractions. It takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse and promises to be a great day out with music and entertainment for all the family. This kind of event is a new direction for us where we aim to attract and engage with a new family audience. As well as helping us to generate income, we're planning to use events such as this

I Love Volunteering

Helping our cause, learning something new, making friends and having fun are the four things volunteers tell us they want from volunteering. Here we meet Gill Gardiner at Telford Head Office and her manager Clerical Administrator Sarah Walford who tell us about their experiences both as a volunteer and a volunteer manager.

GillI retired last year and relocated to a new area and I wanted something to do to meet new people. I went along to various groups and at one of them there was a talk by a lady from PDSA and she mentioned volunteering.

Looked online It hadn’t occurred to me before but it was like a light switch moment. I looked online when I got home and there were roles near me, so I applied. I got a call the following day and an interview the day after that and then I started the following week!

One of my first projects was doing a survey about volunteer recruitment. I had to ring round the shops and get their views and ideas on what the challenges were and what could be improved. I then wrote this up as a report for the HR team to help improve the volunteer process. It was really interesting.

Team benefit I also help Sarah with various admin tasks. I was an office manager before I came here so I’m used to this type of work. I feel I’m benefitting the team. I like the girls, everyone is very friendly, I like the company.

SarahHaving Gill on the team is

invaluable to us. She really helps me out as I just wouldn’t have time to do many of the tasks that Gill helps me with. Because she has worked in an office before, she understands

the work and I’ve learnt things from her too.

Managing volunteers is also good for my own development.

I don’t line manage anyone yet so this is my first experience managing someone. It’s great on my CV and I have learnt a lot from it. I manage several of our volunteers.

Stepping stone I’ve learnt that I have to adapt my approach for each person – sometimes explaining things in a different way as our volunteers come from all sorts of different backgrounds and with different experiences. It’s been a big learning curve for me and I see it as a great stepping stone to my next role within HR.

We're always looking for volunteers in our shops, offices and Pet Hospitals. Why not join us? Find out more at www.pdsa.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer

07 PDSA NEWS

Sweet talkers work wondersAcross the UK our dedicated PDSA Fundraising Groups are doing fantastic work to bring in vital funds to help us continue to provide a lifeline for poorly pets.

From Belfast to Bournemouth, our Fundraising Groups do everything from table top sales to dog shows to drive income, raise awareness and interest supporters in our wonderful charity. Our fundraisers are regularly found representing PDSA at community events, chatting to people in all weathers, raising funds whilst having a great time.

We asked Margaret from Aldeburgh and Mary from Wrexham about how they got started and what drives them on.

Why did you decide to start volunteering with PDSA?

Margaret Berg (Aldeburgh Fundraising Group): Our dog had been ill for some time and my husband was out of work due to the collapse of the company. We were able to use PDSA so in return we wanted to help you.

Mary Black (Wrexham Fundraising Group): I’m passionate about animal welfare and raising money saves lives and helps owners.

What did you think volunteering in a charity would be like? Is it different? Have you had any surprises?

Margaret: It wasn’t really as I expected. It’s more of a family; everyone is there for you. We are a close knit group and can rely on each other for support.

Mary: Every day is a surprise and you never know what amazing people you can meet at an event.

What’s the best bit about volunteering with PDSA?

Margaret: Friendship and love of animals. We really enjoy swapping our pet stories.

Mary: The knowledge that you are helping keep animals safe and improving their quality of life.

What would you say to other people to encourage them to try volunteering? Are there any top tips you’d give them?

Margaret: Come along! It’s a new way of making friends as well as helping a worthy cause.

Mary: It’s a great way of interacting. You enjoy great team work and fighting for PDSA as a cause brings rewards.

Alison Coughlin, Team Manager at the National Customer Service Centre in Sunderland, says: ‘Supporters can join or set up a Fundraising Group by registering their interest to become a volunteer.’ We have groups across the UK and would be delighted to hear from you and share details of how you can help support our amazing charity.

single day on exercise bikes – at five different Pet Hospital locations.

Taking on the challenge on Saturday 14 July are Director General Jan McLoughlin, Director of Veterinary Services Richard Hooker, Director of Human & Corporate Resources Karen Hailes (pictured below left), Director of Finance Mike Pell and Director of Income & Engagement Paul Havenhand.

Said Jan, ‘We’re looking forward to taking on the cycling challenge in July. The five of us want to use our fundraising challenge to raise awareness of PDSA, engage with supporters and give everyone within the organisation a chance to get involved as well as raise funds.’

Everyone involvedEmployees and volunteers are undertaking fundraising challenges themselves to try to raise £100 each for 100 years. Challenges include everything from mountain hiking to sponsored slims, dress up days, cake sales and Pet Hospital open days.

Pounds for poundsMembers of our Marketing and Finance teams have set themselves a weighty challenge to raise £100 by losing 100 lbs.

Leaders' challenge Area Veterinary Managers Colin Wallace and Stuart Insley have let their teams decide what they can do to raise money. Colin’s team has challenged him to ride pillion at 180 mph at Donnington Park racetrack – even though he doesn’t like motorbikes. And Stuart's team has challenged him to walk 100 dogs, one for every year since PDSA was founded in 1917.

Fashion firstMeanwhile our Human & Corporate Resources team is organising a fundraising fashion show in Telford later this year, supported by our Retail team. It’ll feature clothes and accessories that have been donated to our PDSA Shops.

Recovery wardEvery day our vet teams across the UK are helping sick and injured pets get back on their paws to stay fit and healthy. Sweet-toothed Staffordshire Bull Terrier Bailey had a very lucky escape after wolfing down a potentially lethal dose of chocolate.

Thankfully, her owners were aware of the dangers and took urgent action, meaning our vets were able to provide life-saving treatment. Bailey’s owner Angela from Shard End, Birmingham was horrified to find Bailey had polished off two huge bars of chocolate – over twice the lethal dose for dogs. But thankfully, Angela knew chocolate was poisonous for dogs and rushed Bailey straight to Aston PDSA Pet Hospital.

Our vets immediately gave Bailey medication to induce vomiting, alongside treatment to help reduce absorption of the deadly chemicals contained in chocolate. A very relieved Angela wanted to share Bailey’s story to highlight the dangers that chocolate can pose to beloved pets.

PDSA Pet Care and Chronic Voucher Scheme launchedDuring 2017, we re-shaped our Veterinary Service to help us focus our available funds where we can have the greatest possible impact.

This resulted in us closing the Pet Practice Service and looking for

alternative opportunities to support these clients and their pets. At the start of 2018 we launched two new schemes to clients who were previously registered with the Pet Practice Service - the chronic voucher scheme

and PDSA Pet Care. Clients whose pets have lifelong chronic conditions are able to access a book of 12 x £25 vouchers, to help towards the cost of their pet’s treatment at a private vet practice. PDSA Pet Care offers clients, for £4.50 per month, a range of benefits each year including 20% off treatment costs, a free vaccination course or booster and a free consultation. This scheme has been well received by private practices and we currently have over 100 practices offering this new scheme. In the first week, uptake to these two new schemes has exceeded expectations with over 150 clients accessing chronic vouchers and over 400 applications for PDSA Pet Care and applications are still flooding in.

Ask the expertsWe're celebrating the success of Petwise for Cats. The three-year programme funded by the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust, gave us funding to neuter over 70,000 cats, microchip over 90,000 and give over 100,000 MOTs.

Our veterinary expert Katy Orton answers some question about the scheme.

What impact has PetWise for cats had on the UK cat population?

Neutering this many cats and also offering neutering at 4 months of age will have an enormous impact on the UK cat population. If you imagine each cat could have 2 litters a year of 4-6 kittens, the number get really frightening very quickly. By neutering 70,000 cats it will bring us ever closer to having a stable cat population across the UK.

Will the programme continue?

We would love to continue the programme when we have funding, and possibly even expand the programme to other species.

Why is it important to have a scheme specifically for cats?

Despite fairly high numbers of neutered cats, the unwanted, stray and feral cat population was still a significant problem in the UK. Rehoming centres were full to capacity and the only way to tackle this problem was to reduce the number of unwanted cats being produced. Thanks to the generous funding to provide neutering for free, there were no obstacles to getting it done.

The initiative ensured we could neuter any cat over 4 months at no cost to the client.

What more can we do to make life better for cats?

Understanding their natural behaviours and catering for them is a huge benefit for cats. They often do best in single cat households and need access to scratching posts that are high enough to extend themselves fully. They prefer sleeping in high areas and don’t like to toilet close to where they eat. There are so many little changes we could make in our homes to keep our cats stress-free and give them much better lives.

Let's meet…Kate Van Der Plank, Head of Volunteering

What was your first job?

My first ‘proper’ job after graduating was at Cadbury’s. As an animal lover, PDSA is my best job ever, but as a complete chocoholic Cadbury’s is a close second. During my 17 years there I worked across all parts of the business including 12 months as a Production Manager working day and night shifts running two of the Cadbury Dairy milk production lines. The smell of chocolate in the factory was amazing!

What was your previous job?

Managing Director of a management consultancy business helping businesses, charities and Government work better together for social benefit. I got involved in some amazing projects including working with the Cabinet Office to shape national policy on volunteering and working cross sector to help set up a national campaign to get more young people into volunteering.

Why did you join PDSA?

As an animal lover and also committed to helping people in poverty I had an immediate affinity with PDSA. I initially joined on a temporary contract to deliver a six-month project, however, after working with such great people and for an organisation with such a clear vision I loved it so much I quickly realised I wanted to stay.

Role

My role is to ensure we have the right volunteers to run our shops, Pet Hospitals and education activities and support teams across PDSA, and develop new ways that volunteers can help us deliver our goals. Two of my priorities are reaching new audiences through the great volunteering opportunities we provide and getting better at using our network of volunteers to build stronger connections at the heart of the communities we serve.

Fun fact

I've fostered 22 dogs over the last 18 months (Not all at the same time!) all rescued from appalling conditions in Romania. As well as my own three dogs, other pets in our household include Boris our Bearded Dragon lizard and Garlic the African hissing cockroach.

Me

Passionate, energetic, collaborative and honest.

PDSA remembers

13 PDSA NEWS

Freddie Bircher

Freddie joined PDSA as a Trustee in 2001 and became our Chairman in 2004. During his time as

Chairman we saw PDSA enjoy steady growth while still facing many challenges. After a short illness he died peacefully on Wednesday 11 October 2017.

Betty Haist

Betty volunteered for many years in our Bramley Shop and was a much loved volunteer. Assistant Manager Ann

Hassett said, ‘Betty volunteered in our shop from the day it opened in 1996 until three years ago. She was a fantastic character, full of fun and joining in everything we did. She had tireless energy and PDSA was her life as she volunteered most days. She would have been 87 last October.’

Mandy Smith

We also remember Mandy who volunteered at our Cardiff Cowbridge Road Shop and who passed

away unexpectedly last October. Mandy was known as a friendly, bubbly personality and loved making the team laugh. She had been a volunteer for more than five years and played a very active role in the Shop’s success.

Karen Clark

Karen was a Receptionist at Birmingham (Oldbury)Pet Hospital and described by her team as a full of life vibrant

character. She was always conscientious, and was their go to person for her knowledge on over-the-counter products. She was very family orientated and lived for her family. Karen's favourite saying was “keep your crown straight and don’t shuffle”. She was very much part of the team and will always be remembered for being a much-loved colleague and friend.

Jean Read

Jean was PA to the Director of Veterinary Services, including Gairn Ross, Jan McLoughlin and Richard Hooker.

Jean then moved to the role of Specialist Administrator within the Veterinary clinical operations team. Jean was a loyal, helpful and hard-working member of the team and was with us for over 25 years before retiring from PDSA in December 2015. Jean passed away on 7 November 2017. She will be missed by all those who knew her.

We always appreciate the hard work and commitment of all our volunteers. Our gratitude and congratulations go to the volunteers listed below who’ve been presented with their Long Service Awards from September to December 2017.

ReflectionsWasn’t it great to see PDSA on BBC TV as we joined the parade for the Lord Mayor’s Show in London? It really echoed our past. As this fabulous picture from 1938 shows, we would regularly march through the streets of the capital to St Martin-in-the-Fields church for a special animal lovers’ service. If you look closely you can see our Founder Maria Dickin CBE joining the parade to the right of the PDSA Technical Officer holding the first flag.

Mock hospital

Showing people what we do in our Pet Hospitals is vitally important to encourage their support. But staging photoshoots in the hospitals can be time consuming and take our vets away from their important work. That’s why we’ve created a mock-up of a Pet Hospital operating theatre in a formerly unused room at Head Office. And it looks just like the real thing! Check out this photo and see if you think it’s an actual Pet Hospital - or not…

Volunteers Week 2018

Keep a look out for lots of activities happening across PDSA during Volunteers Week 2018 which runs from 1 to 7 June including the return of ‘Back to the Floor’, where our leaders go out to our sites around the country to volunteer their services. Over 21 million people volunteer in the UK at least once a year and this contributes an estimated £23.9 billion to the UK economy. Such a big contribution is worth a big celebration and we’ll be joining in during the summer.

Cool Connie

Cool Connie Smith isn’t your typical 90-year-old; she recently marked her milestone birthday with a hair-raising paragliding trip in aid of PDSA. Connie, who has supported PDSA since she was a seven-year-old, took to the skies in southern Spain, where her son lives, enjoying views of the breath-taking coastline. Connie, from Grantham, Lincolnshire, said, it was absolutely fantastic.

Ash and Amber

Two much loved dogs who helped our Bournemouth Fundraising Group to raise thousands of pounds have sadly passed away. Malamute Ash and Bulldog Amber were a part of the group’s collections for nine years but sadly Ash became ill at the end of 2016 and Amber died shortly afterwards. Group Chair Cindy Jermon said, ‘I miss them and people still ask about them; they were truly loved by everyone and were a credit to PDSA.’
